Neil Armstrong the first person to set foot on the moon has died at the age of 82.
US astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, has died aged 82.
A statement from his family says he died from complications from heart surgery he had earlier this month.
He set foot on the Moon on 20 July 1969, famously describing the event as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".
US President Barack Obama said Amstrong was "among the greatest of American heroes - not just of his time, but of all time".
Last November he received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest US civilian award.

One of the many greats now deceased, and unfortunately there are many more to come.

Certainly a man who will go down in history and be remembered for many, many years. Whenever space travel is mentioned, especially with planets and other bodies, his name will pop up.
tbh I don't see him as a hero or a "ledgend"
Indeed, he's just a historical figure doing what he was told. He wasn't extra-ordinary to be a hero or a legend, just a man who made history.

Buzz Alrdin on Neil Armstrong's Death
I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Neil Armstrong today. Neil and I trained together as technical partners but were also good friends who will always be connected through our participation in the mission of Apollo 11.
Whenever I look at the moon it reminds me of the moment over four decades ago when I realized that even though we were farther away from earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone.
Virtually the entire world took that memorable journey with us. I know I am joined by millions of others in mourning the passing of a true American hero and the best pilot I ever knew. My friend Neil took the small step but giant leap that changed the world and will forever be remembered as a landmark moment in human history.
I had truly hoped that in 2019, we would be standing together along with our colleague Mike Collins to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of our moon landing. Regrettably, this is not to be. Neil will most certainly be there with us in spirit.
On behalf of the Aldrin family, we extend our deepest condolences to Carol and the entire Armstrong family. I will miss my friend Neil as I know our fellow citizens and people around world will miss this foremost aviation and space pioneer.
May he Rest in Peace

i always liked buzz, the 'unsung' hero if you will, and it must be so hard for him. even in this little speech you can hear the emotion!

Oh that is sad. Although I'm sure it doesn't make it any easier for his family, at least they can say he lived a very long and unique life.
First man on the moon & will never be forgotten!
RIP Neil Armstrong
