Erm hi.

This isn't exactly the most pleasant topic in the world lol but hey hó, I need advice. One of my ears is now "partially blocked", with (what I suspect and what I hope) wax. If anyone is to blame it's probably me for using cotton buds to clean them out for years even though there's persistent reminders by people not to ;[. Anyway the effect has obviously taken it's toll and now I've ended up with a partially blocked ear (it has been like this on/off for the past few months but I could usually get rid of the .. blockage in a few mins, not now though).

Anyway, this is probably a wake up call that I should start using "eardrops" or w.e as a better way to clean out the inner ear and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a specific type or brand lmao. I know some people online seem to think spray is better than liquid drops and then vice versa.

Omg I'm sorry this is such a weird thread..

What a load of crap that is, I've used cotton buds all my life and so has everyone in my family, I've never even known any other way to get them clean unless you wash them out... and no-one has ever had any problems, so it's the first I've heard of that :S Unless you started cleaning too deep inside your ear, but you would feel the pain so idk... What I'd suggest is using a candle, okay I know it sounds crazy but I'm just used to using Russian type of medicine and I know they are very very effective and it's not used only to unblock ears, its used for general health as well. I didn't know if people in the UK use them but it turns out they do and the treatment is known as 'ear candling' so have a search online, try find a place where you can buy the candles and then follow the instructions, its really simple and take a look at some youtube videos as it pretty much explains everything. Once the candle has burnt out, you cut open the candle and inside, you'll be amazed to see how much wax there is. Try it, I highly recommend it as it's very effective!

By the way, when I say ear candle, it isn't actually a candle so don't be alarmed! Just look at some youtube videos, you'll get a better idea.

Blame like every single piece of detailed advice that says "NO DON'T USE THEM YOU CAN DAMAGE YOUR EAR". Tbh I never thought they could damage unless you shoved it right in, which is just silly, the only thing it could have done is potentially push more wax back. I have always been told and seen sources that say not to use cotton buds. But if you can use it for so long and be fine, I'm cursed :(

I haven't heard of that thing before, does sound very interesting to be honest. I'll take a look at it later xo. Thanks.. "branch" ;)

Sorry to hear about your ear problem. I've honestly never heard of anything like this before either. Every single person in my family uses ear buds and it hasn't caused us any problems. I don't really know how your ears are blocked but when I went for a head massage and wash they also cleaned my ears by pouring warm water down my ear. Maybe this will warm and melt the wax or whatever you have stuck inside your ear?

I've just watched a video about ear candling and it looks so strange! The the most common treatment I know of would be syringing (or "ear irrigation" as the NHS like to call it). Just see your doctor. :P

Pro tip: Don't follow branch's advice

It's both dangerous and stupid tbh

If it affects your hearing etc and nothing will get rid of it then go to the doctors. They'll use a kl machine which shoots warm water into your ear which washes all the wax out

I had this when I went diving. Not sure how much of a help I can be, but one thing that's fabled to work is either pouring warm olive oil in your ear, leaving your head tilted for about 5 minutes and then pouring it all out. Or if you have an ear infection at all squirt a syringe with hot (-ish -don't want to burn yourself) water in it. It will melt down the wax on your eardrum and clear your ear.

Also, if you use Olbas oil with steam and keep clearing your nose + sometimes holding your nose and blowing gently, you should be sorted (: it's either wax or flem that has built up in your sinuses. GOOD LUCK!
