View Full Version : Some Pretty Darn Useful Cydia Mods (best: Make Chrome for iOS less laggy)

Personally, I'm of the philosophy that if you possess a non-jailbroken iOS device, that it is no more useful than a rock. Apple developed this incredibly unique and reliable platform, partnered it with great hardware but then roped a giant lock around it all and forbid us (the users) from controlling the entirety of our iOS experience. Fortunately the medicine to that is the ability to jailbreak, and I just thought I'd post several of my favourite jailbreaking addons below (which without, I would be on an Android device here, but certainly not a Windows Phone device because I hate the MSIE engine, and not a RIM device because I hate their everything (hi Matt, hi others!)).

Nitrous
I recently discovered this. On iOS (and windows 8 on ARM), all third party browsers (i.e Chrome) are automatically slower than Safari and Internet Explorer (because third party browsers aren't allowed access to their desired JavaScript JIT compilers and instead have to interpret JavaScript). Both companies claim this is for security (and to a degree it is), but it still sucks: On iOS this means that the amazing Chrome browser is painfully slow at executing JavaScript because it doesn't have access to Apple's Nitro JavaScript compile. The tweak gives Safari (and any other program or browser you select) access to the Nitro engine, and makes Chrome on iOS just as fast as Safari.

Here's my favourite Cydia modifications, I'd love for anyone else to share your own favourites with me too :)

Browser Changer
This allows you to set your default browser on iOS to Chrome, Atomic Browser or whatever you want.

Infinidock
This allows you to cram as many icons as you want in your dock, and even lets you scroll through them if you want.

Infinifolder
Allows you to put as many items as you want in a folder (I think by default without this you can only put 9 items in a folder or something).

Zephyr (AWESOME)
This allows you to swipe up from the bottom of your screen to invoke the task switcher, and if you swipe left and right on your screen it switches applications, sort of like on OS X if you were to swipe on your trackpad to change spaces.

SwipeSelection (AWESOMER)
Moving the text selection icon on ANY mobile device with a touchscreen is normally horrible. This mod lets you drag your keyboard to move the text selection icon. Confused? Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=WSzg0r05Eg8#t=39s) (may contain swearing or something) (works on iPhone's, touches and pads). You can even hold shift and select text with it.

Alarming
I don't keep my iPhone's volume turned up most of the time because profs don't like phones going off in lectures, so when I use my phone as my alarm the sound isn't always maximized. This tweak automatically turns your volume on for alarms, and when the alarms are done, restores your original volume state.

Quasar (mostly for iPad)
This allows you to run apps in windowed mode, so you can do multiple things in multiple windows at the same time.

BiteSMS (mostly for iPhone)
Mimics the normal SMS app on iOS, except it shows quick reply popups (like ChompSMS or Handscent for Android).

I downloaded and installed nitrous. I really did not see any difference at all...

The difference is astronomical:

Are you sure you enabled it in settings?

$0.99 for Nitrous? Too expensive!

HotelUser Yeah I have it enabled in settings. I'm not new to the jailbreak scene. Just doesn't work for me at all.

SBSettings. Very useful for easily turning on/off certain settings and brightness without going through settings.

I never even considered SB, thanks for mentioning it, it does make toggling things much better!

I personally thought it was worth it, and the improvements for me are consistent with the screenshot I posted :P
