Celebrations are under way in Northern Ireland (30,000 expected) this evening to mark 100 years from when the decision was taken to remain British. Back in 1912 and many Irish people were fighting and killing the British people to become a separate state, hundreds and thousands of people emerged from the northern 6 counties and asked the UK Government not to make them Irish by signing the Ulster Covenant. The British Government listened and this saw the birth of Northern Ireland.

The day the people of Northern Ireland decided to remain loyal with the Empire, the United Kingdom and the Monarchy and broke away from the newly formed 'Irish Free State' - much to the distaste of the Irish Republicans who then embarked on a series of terrorist attacks against the British state who they saw as 'occupying' the northern part of the island of Ireland.

Long may we stay united despite the surrender to the IRA in the 1990s.

Thoughts?

Atleast it was peaceful lol. I was working and would of stayed away anyway, but usually it's full of drunk idiots who ruin the parades and put the older and younger generations off because its just an excuse for chavs too get drunk. The town I live in is very unionist!

The ira has actually murdered my great uncle for being a policeman and my granda always had to move house because he was high up in the police bit pointless really.. I don't think it matters if your Protestant, catholic, unionist, nationalist people should put it all behind them, although I'd hate for it too all be Ireland I suppose :S

It's good that they fought for what they wanted and that the British Government, like with other British offshoots like the Falklands, respected their collective choice and protected them. A nice thing to celebrate.
