Next week Windows 8 will be released to the public and you can pre-order a copy now. I was wondering how many people are going to upgrade to it?

Nope. Metro is only good for tablets. If there was an option to disable it then I might as there are a lot of improvements

OkProbably, it's 14.99 for me because I bought a windows 7 PC recently, don't know how to get the update though! Might install it on my laptop and see if I like it, don't want it any slower. Does Windows 8 have the Windows 7 desktop? What should I do and are you upgrading? xxMATTGxx;

I would assume you will need to go and look the computer manufacturers website to see if they mention about that Windows 8 offer since you got a new Windows 7 PC. In terms of it having the desktop, yeah it has it.

Not at the moment but maybe in the not so distant future. Windows 8 doesn't really do anything I cannot already do on Windows 7.

I tried it for about a month, so I gave it a fair chance, but all those small things that annoyed me with it just began to add up and piss me off. I switched back to 7 last week and haven't looked back since.

Totally agree but are both of yours touchscreen, mine aren't. I hard that consumer preview had few issues with scroll bar but I think those are fixed. Upgrading both laptop and PC. :)

When I downloaded parallels desktop for my imac, I downloaded windows 8 as well.
I must say I didn't like it that much. First, I didn't see anything I could do with it that I couldn't with windows 7, and second the reason I downloaded it was to use SAM broadcaster, and it doesn't work in windows 8!

Neither are, still unsure about whether I want to get a Windows 8 tablet or not.

Classic Shell is a good UI avoidance system, that and I rarely use the current start menu anyway since I can pin all of my programs to the task bar.

xxMATTGxx

I did notice that I don't actually use the start menu that much and only to search for what I wanted to open/find.

But in terms of searching I personally only ever use keys to do it and the functionality via keys is identical between Windows 8 and Windows 7 so even that is a non-issue I feel.

Yeah, I read an article about it then decided to see how much I actually used it. Then noticed I often press the Windows Key on my keyboard and then start typing away. You can do that in Windows 8 even with the start screen so it isn't much of a bother to me personally as well.

I'll be avoiding it like the plague tbh, the UI looks as if it's really not made for the mouse and keyboard.

That said, if things have improved since the consumer preview then it might be a plague worth catching.

In my opinion people should upgrade because it brings new features they need not just because its brand new.

It took me ages to upgrade from XP to Windows 7. I think it was this time last year (not to sure) and it was only because my disc broke and it was a student one that I couldn't find an iso for so the serial didn't work on the normal ones. It took me that long because well money but also I didn't have a reason to upgrade - yeah windows 7 is great now I'm using it but nearly everything I wanted to do I could do with XP, windows 7 just improved it and added some handy features to make it easier (some brought into vista) like the folder explorer bit in the taskbar and search in start (think some might be actually available in XP with downloads.

I do like some of the stuff - I like the fact that you can virtually mount ISO files without needing additional programs, task manager, file transfer, copy and paste etc. all looks improved. Looking at the video someone posted on here - it's annoying that you can't search everything in the main search e.g. uninstall programs you need to open up the control panel and then search - seems windows 8 has went backwards with some stuff (although heard you might be able to change this in settings). I do like the fact windows 8 devices allow cross platform.

When I have my new PC which might be sometime I may try it.

I don't think I could ever go back to using Windows XP on a regular basis.

It worked. The problem with a lot of operating systems today is there all little changes, design and stuff. There's some nice features but a lot are available with other programs - Lots of programs are still made xp compatible which is why i stayed with it for so long and if my disc hadn't broke may still have had it (got 7 when I was a student so I got it cheap). Obviously windows 7 is young so I don't want them to just ignore it but I don't find windows 8 has any big things feature wise that I can't do on 7

I wouldn't expect any modern operating system to work to be honest. Yeah XP worked but I find 7 just a hell of a lot better in terms of performance and features. I'm not suggesting anyone to upgrade to Windows 8 straight away from 7 but if people are still using XP then It's time to think about upgrading.

Looking at some random laptops with windows 8 it's not that much really. There are laptops out there for £350 with Windows 8. I need to pick a laptop though and that is hard with my knowledge :-) Will have to make a thread asking for suggestions or something so I get something decent.

Well when Windows 7 came out I found (maybe I was just looking in the wrong place) that it was cheaper to find a laptop with XP with similar specs to one of W7.

Thought I would post in this thread again seeing as it is the 26th October which does mean it is the official launch day of Windows 8!

Anyway, you can actually upgrade to Windows 8 for £25 which is on a limited offer that ends on 31st January 2013. You can see more information about that by going to:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/buy?ocid=GA8_O_WOL_Hero_Home_FPP_Null

Note: If you want to go and buy it now and the page says "The new Windows...coming soon" which is probably due to the fact it's still the 25th in the USA then you can download the "Upgrade Advisor" by going to: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=262205 and this will then let you buy it instead of waiting.

It's Essex, the only reason for the internet there is porn and beauty tips :( The Metro interface looks like it could work for computers attached to a TV. It's tempting to get it and then tell you what it's like.

I've got it on my University Dreamspark, but judging by what I've seen on reviews and people actually using it, it's not a computer OS, it's a tablet OS. Microsoft tried to be like Apple and create some continuity but they've overdone it, Mac OSX doesn't look exactly like iOS and for good reason. I think it's almost lazy on Microsoft's behalf, especially the fact they removed the start menu in what looks to be a deliberate forcing of people to use the Metro menu (which for touch screen users is nice, but for keyboard+mouse users is majorly unnecessary).

This is just another in the sequence of how Win 2000 was rubbish, Win XP was great, Win Vista was rubbish, Win 7 was great, Win 8 is rubbish so judging by that, the next release of Windows should be good.

We'll see how Windows 8 performs when we found out how many copies have been sold. People need to get over the fact that things change and yes the start menu has gone. You can easily get used to the start screen or even use 3rd party software to give you alternative. Vista was only an issue due to drivers and performance wasn't that great to the start - Is that a problem with Windows 8? No. You could say it even performs even better than 7 in a way.

I could live without the start menu, but it's the idea that metro UI is in essence replacement for the start menu which irritates me. That's a interface for touchscreen users not keyboard & mouse users. I don't think it'll break any records Windows 7 set.

could you in theory buy an xp license then upgrade to w8 for the same price of w7>w8

and can you boot off the w8 disc from bios and clean install to a new hard drive? or would you need to dl w7 first

If you're running a version of Windows now, then you will be able to buy and download the Win 8 upgrade edition. In the downloader there is the option to burn it to a disc. You can then as normal, reformat your hard drive and install a clean install of Win 8 from the upgrade disc. When it comes to activating it once the operating system is installed there is a little registry hack you have to do and then it will activate as if it was a full install and not just an upgrade :)

I'm TRYING to upgrade to it now but it keeps getting stuck at the second 'preparing' screen at 2%. Rather annoyed right now. ;(

Windows 8 Users:

I've came across a pretty cool application that lets you create your own tiles for the start screen. So if you wanted the tiles for the applications to look different to what they do by default then this will come in handy.

Pretty handy if you want to make applications have metro looking tiles instead of the default ones they came with when you install them.

Had some gift cards for a retailer here lying about so thought might as well go for it and paid $18 in the end.

Installed it first time around, then for the first time since buying my netbook I noticed the processor is 64-bit (Acer used 32-bit so assumed that it was just 32-bit). So reinstalled with the 64-bit disc.

Last night, I did feel like I regretted it. However, I got used to the Metro UI and have been enjoying it. Seems a lot faster to boot up and .. well just in general!

Just hope the pricing for the next Office is just as good.

I can sort of see the reasons behind it coming off as a Touch UI rather than a keyboard and mouse interface, the tiles do seem huge (I can't make a proper opinion until actually buying it when I get home, I'm using full-screen videos and forming an idea of what it is like from that :P). Can they be shrunk so your eyes don't strain? They tiles seem like they would be really useful on desktop computers if they can smaller.

There's an option there to make the tile smaller. But smaller just means it makes it into those squares instead. Other than that, you can get rid of it all together. Though if you meant shrunk as in show it as if it's like an icon then I haven't seen such option but I like that idea.

Oh another thing about my Windows 8 experience is that I got a bit pee'd off when none of the Metro apps would load because my resolution is 1024 x 600 when I think it's minimum has to be 1024 x 768. Oh well, a simple registry tweak later and the apps work fine.

I'm thinking more 1/4 the size of the Desktop/Store/Maps/SkyDrive tiles. On a large screen, those sized tiles would be perfect. But the size they are in that image seem like they could be unbelievably painful after a while :P

To be quite honest, I use the desktop more than Metro at this moment in time so the sizing of the tiles isn't really an issue for me. In terms of eye straining, with all gadgetries not just computers, it's the brightness that annoys me. Which is why I use F.lux :P

Edit: though having said that it's a pain in the arse scrolling across the tiles on such a small screen. But hey that's a first world problem, I have other things to worry about!

I should get my copy tomorrow. Been looking forward to this for a while. I own a Windows Phone so the "new" ui is comfortable for me. I'll also probably buy a surface for my travels.

There has been 4 million Windows 8 upgrades in the past four days. Not a bad start!

Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system went on sale on October 26th, and the company has just announced it has already sold four million upgrade copies. At a keynote address in Seattle today, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer revealed the first Windows 8 statistics — four million upgrade copies over the first weekend of sales.

Not bad, it would be interesting to see the stats for the number of PCs bought with Windows 8 installed and Surface sales as well. I imagine Windows 8 upgrade disc sales are not included?

I would expect Surface sales later on this year if it won't be mentioned in the BUILD keynote for sure. I'm not quite sure how they count it unless they just count activations? I'll wait and see if that gets mentioned anywhere.

"Sales of laptops dureing launch weekend have been ahead 20% of our forecasts" - Dixons

"We are excited about what we are seeing from initial sales and it looks to be good" - HP

Ah it probably is just activations. I can't imagine the laptops sold by Dixons/HP were all with Windows 8, they only say forecasts are up so that could just be machines rather than anything to do with the OS :P

I would expect a lot of the machines they now sell are running Windows 8. Although I haven't been to one of the stores since the launch so can't confirm :P

I've got Windows 8 now and it is confusing at first but it's not bad when you start to get use to it. Does anyone know if you can change notification sounds?

1. Go to the start screen and then look at the bottom right hand corner and you will see this:

2. Click the - and the screen of apps will zoom out. You then need to right click one of the group of apps and then you should see this happen:

3. Then click "Name group".

Thankyou! Gonna go mad now making loads of groups hahaha!

I gotta say ive not had it long and i absolutely love it, thought it would be quite tedious but its actually really easy to use, only little nigwig is when closing apps having to drag RIGHT to the bottom, and not like being able to throw them, but its great so far!

We on about closing the start screen apps yeah? Have you tried doing it the other way? Go to the top left of your monitor screen then a preview should show --> Move your mouse down and then you will see a list of open start screen apps.

Then you just right click on the ones you want to close then click close app. I would take a screenshot but it disappears when you hit the screenshot button :P

GommeInc;

I went into a Currys Digital or whatever they are called to see what computers they have on sale. All of them that was on view was running the Windows 8 operating system. They also have a big screen at the window which you could touch from the outside as well.

It is only used for storing raw dxtory/fraps footage until it is encoded into a more sensible storage format so I've only lost about 30mins or so of gameplay footage I recorded a while ago. Still seems quite a serious problem that a installation to a completely unrelated drive would screw up the raid array. Can't even actually get the intel software that you can use to manage the array to run in Windows 8 yet.

That answers that question then :P

Was there any hint to a Windows 7/laptop sale? They must have them in stock still, or got rid of them quickly somehow like selling old stock to another company.

Couldn't see any sign of it but could vary between stores I suppose.
