this.
it's an amazing headset
I had a headset and about 6 years ago, it wasn't an expensive one but I switched to a headphone / desktop mic combination because I thought that headphones would be more comfortable, and the mic sound quality would be better as stand-alone products. Absolutely the best decision if you've got a desktop PC imho and I will never use a headset again.
What I use:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-MDRXD200-MDR-XD200-Headphones-Wired/dp/B0007N55NW/ (replaced by an inferior product now)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-980186-0914-USB-Desktop-Microphone/dp/B0000ATCOR/
The headphones cost approx £15 new and have amazing build-quality (it's still going strong after 6 years of daily abuse) and excellent sound quality, way above what you'd expect for the cost. You can get a decent set of headphones for under £20 if you read professional reviews as I did and check buyer feedback as carefully as possible.
The mic is used by several professional Youtube commentators such as IIIBREADIII* and many others. I've been asked many times on Skype what mic I'm using because it's super clear and has great quality sound and is definitely worth more than the £18 they're asking for it at Amazon.co.uk
If you've really got your heart set on a headset, Microsoft Lifechat LX-3000 is not a bad call (as scottish posted)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-LifeChat-LX-3000-Headset-Black/ approx £20. But neither audio in or out will be as high a quality as standalone products.
Good luck!
