guessing you've got terrible resolution atm (your graphics card cant detect the drivers), reinstalling your drivers should fix this

YOUR FIRST MISTAKE WAS BUYING AN AMD GPU

death to AMD, you have to sacrifice a pig a goat and the blood of an ox to install drivers for them

It wasn't showing, had to restart a few times. Managed to have regular display back but my driver date now says 17/05/2010. When i try to search for a later version it says no matches but im nearly sure earlier on there was a driver i had for 2011 and it was working fine. Hmm any ideas?

using an ati radeon hd 5450

it says i have the latest driver and the data now says 2012 but the screen is still messed up and i don't think it is detecting the gfx card

Don't AMD do some software that comes packaged with the driver? Catalyst, or was that just ATI? Ano they got rebranded to AMD but maybe the same name program. Anyway try searching for that in Program Files & see if you can start it, might give you a better indication of what the software can and can't see and whether it's just defaulted to a resolution.

Whats it say in device manager since you did what mrwoo said?

I assume the AMD error message is from the software?

I found this on the AMD website, this is for 64-bit Windows: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx

Your version and date are different, so that looks like a newer update. Try installing that, up to you whether you want to uninstall your current drivers or catalyst program. I'd probably uninstall catalyst over the drivers.

Yeah that's Catalyst producing that error, uninstall Catalyst and that (hopefully) will uninstall your drivers as well. Then reinstall the driver from that link and hopefully that'll go through without error. May be an idea to do all that in Safe Mode as well.
