View Full Version : Torn between Nexus 10 and a new iPad

I can have any of the two following tablets. Money is not an issue, can afford both and don't care about spending more or less.
Nexus 10 32GB
iPad 4th gen, 32GB with Wi-Fi (black if it matters)

Would like a tablet for entertainment and videos (YouTube, local content, iPlayer, other catchup services). Games too. I don't need productivity or music or ereader functionality, I have a netbook, iPod touch and Android-based ereader (which is crap for anything other than ebooks) as well as a Galaxy S II (the reason I don't need 3G as I can tether). My head says that the Nexus 10 is the one to go for because of the screen and specs and the fact that I think Apple is going downhill since Jobs died, but my heart says iPad because it looks like a good tablet (have used other people's iPads before) and I want something that "just works" (and the amount of problems I've had with app compatibility on Android makes me doubt this with the Nexus).

What would you guys suggest?

Well if your head says Nexus 10 then go for it :) As far as I remember, the Nexus 10 has the highest resolution of the two. App compatibility is getting better with Android, so that's not too much of a concern and it covers all the things you're looking for in a tablet. Plus you can brag you've got the latest Nexus gadget, seeing as the Nexus 7 went down extremely well and if the Nexus 10 follows the same standard it can be nothing but good.

My only criticism is it looks odd, it's designed to be on its side rather than in portrait like the iPad.

Go for the iPad, there aren't enough tablet ready apps for Android yet.

This, Apple is still far ahead in terms of apps, and IOS just..works.

This is why I'm leaning towards the iPad... I think iPad is what I'll end up with, but still, the specs of the Nexus are tempting.

At the end of the day it just comes down to personal preference. I lost my iPhone 4S recently, few days later got the Galaxy Nexus (gutted that the nexus 4 has just come out though) and overall I prefer it over iOS and my iPhone, only thing I hate is it doesn't look as premium but personally I prefer the Android OS to iOS and like someone said earlier... the android apps are really catching up with ios now, I have every app I had on my iPhone on my nexus.

I would go both if I could but I doubt that's an option so in the end I'd likely choose the iPad because firstly, I would want the superior battery life and secondly, Apple is much better at software updates for old devices. Even old iPad 1s and iPhone 3gs can run iOS 6 whereas with my poor Android devices I always end up rooting them to get software updates, and then that has its own complications.

That's what I would do if I were to buy a tablet right now, but I wouldn't want to buy a tablet right now. If I had no tablet I would wait for cheaper x86 Windows devices and probably get one of those.

Apple's hardware is unparalleled and definitely the best in the market, but iOS is becoming very stale. Android is at the forefront of UI innovation and because it's a Nexus device you will get the latest version of Android straight away, unlike many Android phones. If you're more interested in Apps and don't mind iOS then I'd go with the iPad, but if you want a proper gadget you can make your own, with loads of customisable features and a higher resolution screen then I'd go with the Nexus.

The only* drawback of an android tab over an iPad is that there's fewer tablet applications for android. However, with the number of android tab devices coming out right now and in the very near future, applications are coming onto the market faster than ever. A Nexus10 would be a great choice and you'll only get more and more out of the device over the next few years. I know you said that you don't care about the price difference but it's £319 vs £479.. £160 could get you a lot of potatoes.

* IMHO

I'd personally go for the Nexus 10. For the price it is great value and despite what you say about not caring about the cost you can still put the extra money to good use. I do agree to some extent that there could be more tablet targeted apps for Android but I understand that Google is pushing android developers to support tablets better. Plus with the extra sales from the low cost nexus line of tablets I don't think app developers can afford to ignore the android tablet scene any longer.

In regards to what has been mentioned about android updates you do have to remember that we are talking about the Nexus line of products from Google which historically have a fairly good track record in terms of being kept up to date with the latest Android version; I'd also argue by the time updates become a issue you'd likely be looking at buying a new tablet anyway.

I rad earlier that Android and Apple now have the same amount of apps in their stores. I know the number compatible with android tablets is smaller but they'll soon catch up.
I would go with the Nexus 10. If they bring out a mobile data 32gb version then I'll definitely be buying that but at the moment my nexus 7 is fine :]

I went for the iPad, after reading the Nexus 10 reviews. I've always fancied one, and I know that if I am patient the Nexus 10 will just be as good, but I got a damn good deal on a 64GB white iPad 4 so went for that.
