View Full Version : Pronouncing words incorrectly?
Absently
04-11-2012, 03:08 AM
I'm just curious if anyone is as terrible as I am. I am awful at pronouncing certain words and even after someone has corrected me I will still pronounce them wrongly. Off the top of my head, everyone corrects me for how I say addict :( I say add-dict or how I say accept, I pronounce it assept. Same with things like lingerie I will pronounce as ling-ger-ray. I'm sure there is so many more, but I can't think, so I will add as time goes by.
So, what words do you pronounce incorrectly?

I am terrible with 'Th' - so The comes out as Vuh. That comes out a Vat. Words such as Three come out as Free. If I try to pronounce 'Th' properly, it'll sound too posh or too stressed! :(
I used to struggle with Millennium, but I'm fine with that now.
As for everything else, it's all subjective. It's common in my town to miss the 'G' off the end of words and to not to pronounce 'T' unless it's at the start of a word.

Erm well three and free usually cause i get the 'th' sound wrong, but i think thats down to my accent/dialect rather than saying it wrong.
But when people drop their T's annoys me and because I live near Blackpool everyone does it and i want to hit them :L

The only word I struggle to pronounce is similarly. It always comes out as either simile or similalalay for some reason :(.
Regarding the post above, oh yes it's very annoying! :(

Things like specific usually end up very wrong, and usually end up adding extra words that aren't in it.
Usually forget T's in things like water, sometimes don't.
@Red (http://www.habboxforum.com/member.php?u=81989); LMAO, puurrrrr you.
Thought of another one which is 'Salmon' usually end up saying 'Slam-on'

I've been told I say "H" wrong If I say on it's own which annoys them :( - There is some other words I can't say as well, trying to think of them actually.

I grew up for years saying free instead of three and didn't even realise there was a difference between them. And I used to have a weird front tooth so before I got braces I pronounced 'th' weirdly.
I also have been told I sound really funny when I say 'no' but apparantley that's my accent and everyone here does it although I never realised.

I get this as well. I'm told that it's not "Hay-ch" but "ay-ch" - I know I've looked up the correct pronunciation but I've forgotten :p
I pronounce most of my words correctly. If I do happen to say something incorrectly I will usually try and (subtly) correct myself.

do you mean when people say H-Eh-Ch (Hay-ch) instead of Eh-Ch (Ay-ch)? Ay-ch is the proper way I think (I might be wrong) and that's the way I say it :)

I say Eh-Ch / Ay-ch. I think Ay-ch is the correct way.

...I never knew there was a difference between free/three.
I always pronounce TH as either F or V - not a different sound :(. It just sounds the same to me, for example:
The (th = V)
Three (th = F) when people say I pronounce it wrong, when they say it, it sounds the same to me. So very confusing :(

I can detect a small difference in Free and Three ;p. Very difficult explaining/displaying it to someone outside of the UK I've found, unsure why.
I had a look earlier and it is 'Ay-ch' or 'Aitch' as opposed to 'Hay-ch' or 'Haitch'. The latter is becoming more common as language evolves though.

I always struggle with regularly and sometimes can't even get it right after a few goes. I also have a habit of dropping my t's in the middle of words like 'water' and dropping the g's off of the end so it's like droppin' when I'm talking fast. People here don't really get the way I speak sometimes and always make fun of the way I say my H's because they're not used to English I suppose...
I can't pronounce words that end with '-rly' (e.g. regularly)
Apparently you're meant to pronounce it like 'reg-u-lully' but my Welsh accent won't allow me to say it like that, so I say it like 'reg-u-lur-ullie' and since I can't roll my Rs either it just sounds so bad :|
I'd like to think that I pronounce everything correctly (living in cambridge!) but i'm sure there are words I don't pronounce correctly and I'm just waiting for someone to let me know :P

I have always struggled with some words, can't say spaghetti, plant pot, petrol (i say it wrong), and I always have trouble saying peoples names.. Ms. Aquamarine was Ms. Aquarium for some time.. GoldenMerc was Goldenmuck for some time too.. Kind of funny when I go on air though I guess?
