I posted a thread (http://www.habboxforum.com/showthread.php?t=760151&highlight=Skype) about this back in September thinking it was going to be the case that this was going to happen one day. It looks like it is going to turn out true with this latest article being posted on TheVerge.

Microsoft to retire Windows Live Messenger in favor of Skype

Microsoft is working towards retiring its Windows Live Messenger client in favor of Skype. The Verge has learned through several sources that Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger service will be retired in the coming months and integrated into Skype. Microsoft has slowly been moving people over to the Messenger backend for Skype over the past few months, with around 80 percent of all IMs sent on Skype being handled by Messenger.

The company will announce the retirement of Windows Live Messenger soon, possibly as early as this week according to sources. The move follows efforts by Skype to link Microsoft accounts to Skype login names ahead of its global retirement plan for Windows Live Messenger. Users of Skype 6.0 for Mac and Windows are now greeted with options to log in using a Microsoft or Facebook account. The Verge reached out to Microsoft for comment on the retirement, we'll update you accordingly.

can't say i'm surprised, windows messenger has been outdated for quite some time so it was always going to happen, especially with microsoft's acquisition of skype...

Oh shush, we know you secretly work for Microsoft and have known for months ;) Don't be embarrassed :P

I suppose it was bound to happen, Skype is incredibly popular and Live Messenger doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere, or hyped, as a current feature you (the consumer) could be a part of.

Msn for mac was awful and I haven't really used it since I got mine in 09.
So what happens if you have a skype acc with the email you have a msn acc for?

On the latest Skype version for both Windows and Mac on the login screen there is a button which makes you able merge the Microsoft and Skype account together.

Oh I see. I'm using an old version though. The newer designs are ugly and impractical :( So don't plan on updating anytime soon.

I have just tried this as I use both MSN and Skype but Skype more and I'd rather just use one program. I take it that by merging my two accounts I should be able to see all my Skype and MSN Messenger contacts via one program but after merging and logging in I'm unable to see any of my msn contacts. Does anyone know why?

FINALLY - I haven't used MSN since early 2000's and even then I had to modify the client to make it slightly useable and to remove the millions of adverts. Good riddance MSN messenger!

So what happens with merge?

Say I have 'example' on skype registered to '[email protected]', on msn have the email '[email protected]'

Would I be able to log in on either 'example' username or '[email protected]' msn account?

Will contacts be carried over (assuming that they assume most people will merge accounts over?)

Does/Will skype have the msn games implemented into it?

Anyone know? :P

I believe you can still log in via skype name and the email address. Once it has merged --> The contacts will start showing up on your Skype. It mentions if they are signed in on messenger or Skype.

Does Skype have MSN games? No not at this moment in time. I didn't realise people still played them but I believe they will most likely start adding more features from WLM to Skype once they announce it's going to retire.

so my contacts for say [email protected] will show up on my skype account 'example', or will it only do that if i ask them/allow them to merge?

Yeah some do, I blame buttons; but it's still played enough and basically only useful feature on msn.

They will show up if you merge the two accounts together. I don't know if you can manage contacts before hand but you can delete them once it's merged if you don't want them on there or delete them before oyu merge them. I haven't actually done it so I am just guessing here.

I haven't used Messenger for ages, I remember when everybody used to use it then Facebook came along. I use Skype more so it doesn't really affect me.

Guess that's all social networks/Instant messengers gone for me. I sparingly used messenger because I don't like Skype (I'm not 100% sure why, I just don't) and I don't have any plans to be more active on Skype.

Don't blame them for making this decision though.

Not to fussed, but Skype isn't exactly great at the moment. They better make some serious improvements or lose a lot of users.

I blame the person I talk to then! There aren't any tricks, ports or anything to increase the quality of Skype?

But yeah voice and video calls on Skype have always been fine for me, a lot better than MSN as well

Usually just with one person its fine on video but when we start using the microphone it lags. Meh maybe it's just us :P

I don't think Skype like some broadband companies. O2/Be Un Limited seems fine with Skype, but anything like Orange it tends to hate, despite similar download/upload speeds. That's the only problem I have had with it, but other than that it's fine :)

So if I merge, I can still use my Skype name, right? I don't particularly like my MSN address, my skype is much easier to remember.

Microsoft has now confirmed the retirement plan for Windows Live Messenger, will start in 2013:

Microsoft has confirmed it will retire its Windows Live Messenger service in favor of Skype. The Verge exclusively revealed Microsoft's plans earlier this week, but the company has since revealed it will start to discontinue Windows Live Messenger in early 2013. Microsoft will integrate over 100 million Messenger users to Skype as part of the discontinuation. "We will retire Messenger in all countries worldwide in the first quarter of 2013 (with the exception of mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available)," says Skype's Tony Bates.

Microsoft is encouraging users to download the latest version of Skype that supports Microsoft accounts, where users can integrate Skype and Messenger accounts into a single Microsoft account. Skype says it will assist users over the coming months to smoothly transition over from Windows Live Messenger.

Not at this moment in time and I'm sure handwriting was removed from WLM apart from the 2009 version.

Oh I do still use 2009 :P really need custom emotes on Skype though or at least put the MSN ones on it because Skype emotes are totally wanky other than the (bow) one which looks like a dude trying to hide his boner

msn custom emotes always been more annoying than good, just people saving like 3 sections of a penis and sending it to people, or just animations of porn

or are my contacts list just weird?

Agreed. Some emotes are nice, like Yahoo! Messenger ones but the Skype ones are not that annoying, I seem to prefer them these days but only because LM ones seem outdated. Microsoft might change the Skype ones to updated LM, at a push.

I don't even use emoticons much, prefer the skype ones anyway. Kinda good in a way because I'm hating on MSN at the moment, always crashes on me!
