It would certainly create lag, it would mean the typing box would have to have a constant connection to the main server

Yeah, that's a good idea. and also [this might have already been posted before] there should be tabs like on MSN that say 'away', 'be right back', 'busy' etc. and you should be able to customize them. :)

There all good ideas. But it causes more down time and lag for something that half the hotel wont be bothered about
