View Full Version : Post count to be disabled in Welcome / Goodbyes
Kardan

I'm sure that this forum already had post count disabled, but obviously I'm wrong.
(And before you reply saying 'OMG U R MOANING ABOUT POST COUNT AGAIN, NOBODY CARES' - Yes, I am, yes, people do care).
Basically, there's no pointful posting except for 'Welcome! Hope you enjoy HxF!' and 'Good luck for the future!', essentially the same reason why the congratulations forum has its post count disabled (Congratulations! / Happy Birthday!)
There's been numerous occassions where people just go through the forum and replying 'Welcome!' to each one, simply for post count - I've always noticed this, but I ignored it, since I thought post count was disabled.
Basically, two options:
1) Disable it - Stop post count abusing
2) Don't disable it - We all jump on the band wagon

I don't think post count should be disabled anyway, just pointless posts should be dealt with individually. A forum is really about posting as a reply to the OP or another post in the thread and as long as that happens I don't see why there is an issue with post count. I still don't even understand why spam has post count disabled when it's easily the most active section.

Oh I thought it already had been a long time ago since it was getting clearly abused. To be fair I don't see it getting spammed quite so much any more but yeah it does seem a bit odd, guess it's ok as long as the post is more than just "HI"

Technically, I don't think you can get any warnings for spamming the forum by replying to each post, because technically they're not pointless posts, since each one is relavent to the OP and you're not abusing it for post count, you could simply say you are saying goodbye to each member that's leaving...
Definitely should be disabled, I'm going to check up the rules on bumping threads and see how many threads I can post in without getting into any trouble...
im pretty sure its disabled in that forum, or is that congrats forum?

There is a rule in a stuck thread within that forum which prevents people from posting multiple replies of the same thing without adding something to their post etc which in theory should prevent people simply going down the list and posting like 20 times. Should be enforced to prevent people abusing for post count etc and spamming the forum/new posts up.

It prevents people from saying 'Welcome' 20 times, but as long as you add something, it's okay according to that thread, so 'Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your stay!' is perfectly fine?

It does say "Because we have had a problem with pointless posting, so try and say something in addition to "Welcome to the forum". Whether it be a nice comment or some friendly advice."
and in the past people have been penalised for spamming the same thing over in each different thread without adding anything unique. Since there is no difference between "welcome" and "welcome to the forum" in that context really, either one repeated 20 times is going to be taking the biscuit and spamming new posts up.
I agree its not the best worded though and probably a bit outdated etc. If its turned off in congrats forum then I dont see how they are different really, both should probably be treated the same.

Well, I've seen people spamming the forum up and never seen any action taken, this rule should be updated to include unique posts rather than just 'add something other than welcome'.

Although posts there often lack content I think it's fine having post count enabled for that forum because it's an incentive for current members to mingle with new members. It makes forum members look very friendly to new users.

Yes, what's wrong with that? It encourages people to welcome new people to the forum, something which is important.
Why are so many people so eager to kill any forum activity

Forum activity over the past year
We should be looking at ways to increase posts not trying to restrict them (which removing post count will ultimately do)

I think its a good thing that new people feel welcomed by getting lots of replies to their welcome thread. Don't think we should be discouraging that.

As a "new" member, I agree with this.
If taking away the post count would discourage your current members not to bother with welcoming new members, it would not be a smart move to disable it.

I like to think we're all a friendly enough bunch to welcome new members without incentive, but I don't think there's much harm in a number going up by one for doing it. I didn't even know post count was enabled in there until now.

I think everyone has said the reasons that are normally said when this has been brought up in the past. The reason it was never disabled is to make sure members do actually welcome others to the forum and so on. I think if someone new makes a thread in there then it's always good to get replies saying welcome blah blah and so on. I know it may get a bit repetitive but a nice warm welcome is a lot better than 0 replies at all. The post count you get in there is like a bonus and a win win for everyone at the end of the day.
I've just looked in that forum and I can see that you have decided to reply to every welcome thread on the first page. It seems you are trying to make a point out of it all with post count being on. I find it silly when users go into a forum and post to every single thread that is there in terms of the first page because to me that is clear that they are just posting it for post count.

Btw on post count, why isn't in enabled in cool rooms? Also post count in welcome forums are ok if they're not abused.

..and yet, they (the ones who suggested it and urged management to enforce it) are still trying to find ways to limit post count. Incredible.

Ah subforums, the place where threads go to die and where subforums eventually die themselves.
You know what i'd like to see? an audit by the moderators of the likes of Kardan's 12,000+ odd post history - and any posts that still are counting towards his and others post counts ought to be removed that don't fit in within the rules that he and others are proposing. They're all full of these wonderful ideas for new rules and keen on imposing them on everybody else - so I say lets impose them.. starting with the ones who suggest it.
Would you be up for that Kardan;?

It's common sense. Anyone could tell if you're just spamming the same phrase over and over again like an automated bot on every post or not.
We don't need extra rules for an aspect that is not a problem. The only way it does become a problem is when people start abusing it. Usually I'd be all for constructive posts, but the welcome forum is very important to give new members a good image of Habbox- so we should encourage genuine posts in there, to make one feel welcome.

Because then I could justify myself and just post some automated, short reply everywhere. This is why the misc. forum was created in the first place. But for Hx as a whole the welcome forum is more important than that.

The Post Count Nazis strike again -.- It's bad enough management listened last time without proper debate - the change was deemed pointless when the arguments for removing them broke down incredibly quickly after actual debate! The only reason post counts were not re-enabled was because management were too lazy to undo it :/
The main argument was it was against the rules - yet there is and was no rule.
The second argument failed because some people do not understand language (i.e. the definition of "pointless"), maths (i.e. the forum wasn't being spammed) and/or logic (post counts are valueless, no-one boasts about post count on here (and if they do they deserve the laughter they will inevitably get) and it's tedious nitpicking).
I'm sure the last thing going through a new member's mind is "I wonder if that "Welcome to the Forum" comment is "spam" or not. Oh well, seems friendly enough *stays*" The "*stays" bit is a complete lie as they very rarely do but the rest is an impossibility AND welcoming someone to a forum is neither spam nor pointless. But of course, Nazism of any kind be it grammar or post counts never understands nor listens to reason

Don't think post count needs to be turned off. Removing post count just legitimises its status as a 'spam' forum rather than tackling the issue, if you think there's even an issue. I don't necessarily think there is and don't think we need to be jumping into decisions based on a small event that is not representative of the general usage of the forum.
The bigger issue is trying to retain users rather than whether post count is enabled. The bigger issue is beyond the welcome forum, it's more about how the community reacts and responds to new users. Inclusion in the community and making them feel welcomed should be an ongoing process that encompasses other forums, Habbo events, competitions and just general conversation.

All the same post (bar one) and all made within minutes of each other, yet these posts were not removed? So either the mods aren't moderating or there is an allowed number of identical posts aollowed that we are not aware of?
I could find many other examples if I wanted too, since I've been aware of the mutliple posting issue.

Lol this was sweet, and I agree. Also like said above, people that just post ''Welcome to the forum'' over and over, will deal with consequences of wanting obviously just to increase their post count. But most people that comment in that forum, I think they actually care about the new members and want to let them know for example, how to go to the Help Desk, how to join a department, etc.
