You could change your laptop's ip address. I think I did that a few years ago, but messed up everything in my laptop.

If I remember correctly the IP address on Skype is just a general one shared by many thus the people you talk to or search you cannot know your IP address only the Skype server one?

Stop worrying and move on in life.
You can do jack all with an IP.
Richie all they can do is DDoS and i doubt if someones going to they have a botnet or just lie about having one.
You can use a free VPN, unless you want to pay for one but that just knocks out more % on your CPU.

I did make a new skype just for the steam but how can I make it more secure.Make sure you have all the security settings enabled for your Skype account (not sure what ones they have) and as Celtix said, use a VPN if you want to hide your IP address although you don't really need to.

As they said VPN
I'm pretty sure it was Kieran; that tweet'd this and i've had a look at it and tempted to get it for (netflix etc), if you still use netflix and stuff where you need to DNS/VPN/Proxy for different countries this could be worthwhile
http://www.tunnelbear.com/pricing/
$49.99 (£31.20 / €38.46) for a year or $4.99 (£3.11 / €3.84) a month
---------- Post added 03-12-2012 at 12:04 AM ----------
also, forgot to mention you can get up to 1.5GB of data per month for free (not sure how much you'd use on skype as i've never really paid attention to data usage)
so could start of with free one upgrade if necessary etccccc

I use Tunnelbear so I can get on Netflix from Germany. I only use the free 1.5GB. It works great for me. Speed doesn't decrease at all. I'll definitely pay when I've used the free 1.5GB.

How long does 1.5GB last on netflix, would assume it'd only be a few movies?

Yeah. Couple of movies. Why would you need it for Netflix if you're in the UK though? :S I only need it cause I'm in Germany.

Because you can switch it to american and american has a much larger library.
Atm i'm using unblock-us though which is like £3.20 a month for their DNS.

Erm... Just run Media Hint in FireFox or Chrome and you get the American library...

I use it on WD TV not computer :P
I tend to watch UK stuff on computer during day if at all, then US on WD TV as they have movies etc i've not seen or series etc so can sit in bed watching it :)
Just get a Teamspeak server, so much easier...

or mumble/vent :p
Never used mumble personally, but seems to be cheaper.
I use Mumble everyday, you can get free 5 man mumble servers from mymumble.com, least you have control then.
Not vent, theres ways to pull ips from vent if your admin.

and obviously he's gonna be the only admin if he owns the server and wants to ensure his privacy
also you can get peoples ip from vent, mumble and TS if you're admin afaik..

This. No one cares, IP addresses are probably worse than postal addresses in terms of publicity. Every site you use, every service you sign in to etc logs your IP, it's a public IP for a reason.

Wrong when you become a streamer there are people that want to knock you offline alot of the big streamers have this problem, they end up being knocked offline. And yes it can be anoyying as **.. so i can see why he wants to hide hes ip.

Whether I get 5 streamers or 105 streamers there will always be a risk of being ddos'd. Since when have habboxforum stopped allowing users to post on the forum asking for advice on an extra security measure? It's also quite good to be aware of things like this. There's no need to be a **** about, stop being so negative, get someone to hug you.

Because people like you don't need to worry about DDoS attacks on residential broadband, or even "business" broadband for that matter.

I think you'd be pretty surprised if you actually knew how often gamers get ddos'd over something petty like a death in the game. A bunch of kids trying to act tough. Either way, I'm entitled to request some help. Whether you believe I need extra security protection or not wasn't the question so it is irrelevant.

No, but this is a forum, for discussion, I'm bringing up the fact no one needs to answer this question because you're not going to need any extra "security" (by the way, good luck defending yourself against a DDoS anyway...)

I thought this but I believe Skype is a program unlike MSN when speech is in progress it's a direct connection between users like P2P software, which kinda sucks but the only thing I can suggest is a proxy. My Skype goes through Luxembourg/Switzerland, stops those trying to find my IP.

Pretty sure it's only file transfers that's done P2P over skype, and everything else passes through their servers
never looked into it and never honestly cared to be honest so probably wrong :P
