You're in a room with 100 boxes. 99 of them contain $100,000. 1 box will kill you. How many would you open, if any? (saw this on reddit and thought i'd post it here...)

I would open at least 5 boxes, probably wouldn't go much further than 10.

None tbh

death for the possibility of 62k isn't worth it lol

Maybe 2-3, no more than 5 though. I bet if you started it would get addictive and you would want to keep opening more and more

just one is enough but i always used to fail straight away playing minesweeper so i'd probably die

Inseriousity.

knowing my luck I'd probably choose the box that'd kill me straight away so I wouldn't even try it lol

I'm unsure, a part of me would want to try it but then again another part wouldn't. Although there's more chance of picking one with money in there's also the chance you'd get the one that kills you. Yeah I've played Minesweeper too, that didn't end well :P.

So there's no bomb ? Instead orientalframe? and the rest was money? I would defiantly open all! Just for the money ;)

Around 10. If I die, I die. I'd be suicidal anyway if I never opened any boxes.

What if there were 10 boxes, 9 containing death and one containing your mother/loved one. Would you risk your life to potentially save theirs?

Kardan
12-12-2012, 09:32 PM
none :P

About the only sane person on here. People obviously don't value their lives if they'd go for a 1/100 chance of dying just for money, and the chance of dying increases each time.

I think I'd open about 30-40 odd, but I'd probably give some away.
But I'd take a few and open them as and when I ran out of £100,000. So like a bank with withdrawals.

Just go to random.org and have the random number generator go from 1 to 100, if it picks 1 you die, and you lower the upper limit as you carry on.

I think people are getting the Maths all wrong, if you decide to go for a 40th box - surely that means only 1/60 boxes would kill you, which is a 0.016% chance at dying. But the fact is, to get to the 40th box you must have had to survive 39 other boxes, so the probabilities add up.

Basically, if you go and pick your Xth box, you have a X% of being dead already.

So some of you might think that if you got down to the final two boxes, it's a 50/50 chance - actually, it's a 99% chance that you will be dead after that box.

does sound suicidal, but would you rather live until say 40 doing exactly what you want or join the rat race and enjoy your life once your health starts to turn?

It does sound quite juvenile but I imagine it to be something like the Bucket List or Seven Pounds.
Can't say it's the greatest logic ever, but do you really want to live until your 90s?

and I'd like to chose, so if it was a freak accident that was instant.

The chance of dying on your 99th pick itself is 50% chance of dying.

Being dead after the 99th box is 99% chance.

You wouldn't live till 40 if you picked the wrong box. You would die, you wouldn't get the money you had won up until that point. It's an instant death scenario, not a 'You can spend your money but your life will be shorter'

Just out of interest, would you say you could put a price upon someone's life ever?
Or would you be more enticed if the odds were even greater and the reward was greater.

I honestly don't think I would take the gamble. I mean, I don't *need* the money, I'm quite happy with life at the moment, so there's no need to risk it. If I want to gamble for a lot of money, I'll stick to the lottery ;)

You died. You don't get the money. Otherwise the whole problem is kind of pointless, and you'd get tons of old people/terminally ill people just doing it to get money for their families.

The point is, you go into a room, you decide if you want to play, you pick a box - you either live or die, and you decided if you want to repeat the process. If you die, that's it. The game gets reset for the next player. It's an all or nothing scenario, at least, that's how I understood it. It's to see how much people are willing to risk their lives for some cash.

Alrighty, doing some maths on the subject:
Once you've opened Box 21, you've had a 25% chance to die
Once you've opened Box 39, you've had a 50% chance to die
Once you've opened Box 52, you've had a 75% chance to die
At least, with the calculations I was doing, these figures should be accurate, doing 1/100 + 1/99 + 1/98 etc.
~~~
After trying the above idea, I hit 1 on exactly my 50th box. Spooky 1/2 coincidence xD?
This is wrong. If you carry on, you'll see that you will be guaranteed to die before you even reach box 100.
The correct Maths is:
(1/100)+((1/99)*(99/100))+((1/98)*(98/99)*(99/100))+... etc.
Pick up each box and see which one doesn't weigh the same as the others. Whichever one weighs differently will be put to one side and the rest opened until that disappointing moment where you realise just at the last second that the box that kills you weighs the same as the others and the one put to one side had the wrong amount of money in and you curse HR and logistics for killing you with your final breath.
The end.
