a) Why so specific?
b) Why not DD-WRT?

I had DD-WRT on my main router (a linksys WRT54G series box), this particular DL-524 is a recently acquired replacement for that router, and I haven't gotten around to setting up DD-WRT on it yet.

I'll admit I stopped reading after I saw the word Vista. Although reading on you seem to have a lot of laptops.

you should come up with some cool use for them instead of just letting them sit there and become even more obsolete!

Game server, media server, XAMPP, teamspeak server, stick it by your desktop, smack ElementaryOS on it and drool at the eyecandy.

Ran game servers, web servers, teamspeak, irc etc on other computers but never actually used it.

I have WD TV which can run basically anything I want over the network, and 1.5TB HDD connected to network so if wish to put anything on it can do.
