View Full Version : Debates
Hi, i was gonna post this last month when the most ridiculous debate ever was made "should you hurt a dog" is what it essentially was. These debates are getting worse and worse and declining in standard. If whoever makes them doesn't have time to try come up with some interesting topics, maybe he should just let somebody else do it.
Yet again there is a debate on Gun Control in America, with the last debate around this topic being only back in September... whats the point? Most debates have been totally silly this year, no offence but really. Why are topics been chosen that everyone will obviously agree on? It pretty clear everyone will and had the same opinion for these. Its basically who can drum up the most facts and make their post sound smart enough to in VIP at this stage.
Is it ever right to kill animals? (everyone will say yes, unless you are in danger...)

They are becoming boring a repetitive, and its clear from the numbers posting in them. Maybe its time for someone with new fresh ideas rather than these silly ones, and ones that seem to be used over and over again every few months.

Yeah I agree that some of them seem a bit repetitive, but it can't be easy coming up with a new debate every week. Maybe there should be a new one every 2 weeks, instead. Or, there could be another debates leader so that they one week debates leader A posts a debate, then next week debates leader B posts a debate.
As for the ideas themselves, though, you can always suggest an idea for a debate here: http://www.habboxforum.com/showthread.php?t=710513.

I think Debates need to be reformed a bit more than just 'better debate ideas'. Instead completely ridiculous questions like "Should Christmas be made illegal?" should be used and then those defending the difficult position should receive more VIP in the long run.

Lol yeah, but not just the best single response but the best argument overall if that makes sense. The winner might have posted 5 times.

Judging by closed debates there is no way its every week, it looks about every two weeks/ just a little under at the moment

This! Need a few more devil's advocates in debates rather than those are going to take the stance of being against something that can be seen as even remotely morally wrong! It's almost always boring and one-sided, or the whole forum v undertaker armed with a plethora of daily mail quotes and obscure videos of interviews with people nobody has heard of.
It's clear grig is running out of ideas if he's recycling a debate he used only a couple of months ago... Do we really still need a debate leader? Most of the members' own debates are better than this rubbish.

I thought the gun one had been done recently as well when I read the thread this morning.
Inseriousity.

Well I think poor Grig is trying to avoid the obvious 'classic' debates and be a bit more original even though they are often the classics simply because they do arouse such passion and get under the skin of human nature. Does mean you end up with a few silly ones though!

True true, you speak words of wisdom there, like to have your idiots aka me Gina who aren't the smartest people about, then you ave your well perv aka liquid luck who posts mainly in papoy thread, then you have spam who are like the best crowd to be talking to once everywhere else is all serious as if it's life or death,

Since when did the rules for debates change :O.
Top Contributor is someone who is consistent in their responses and have a very convincing argument. This is for each and every debate, not debates for a whole month.

On a slightly related topic:
Is the Debate forum going to be just one parent forum or are you going to keep to the unnecessary parent forum and two sub-forums? The thread about this seemed in favour of just one forum.
As for this topic. It's incredibly difficult to make up debates and even more so for the sake of creating "official" debates without repetition. Member Debates seem to be more interesting these days, but mainly because they can be created at any time while official debates can't be too close or too far apart from each other (2 weeks?). I've never understood why Official Debates exist, when the Debates leader could pick out the best debaters from any of the debates. The title is "Debates Leader" after all, and should cover all debates. Otherwise the title would and probably should be "Official Debates Leader".

Yeh it becomes difficult because I don't want to regurgitate old debates, although others in the past have. Probably too old to still be in the job.
I also created a scheme for members debates, more precisely good debates created by members would get 20 rep. Actually awarding members on a monthly basis for them might be an idea.
I wouldn't call the current split pointless, I like it because it's much more organized. Although I'd be happy to reform that and other things as well.

Hmm I was thinking that as well. I think the Debates Leader could still pick out top contributors in members debates (not all of the members debates, though - only when someone really stands out in one of them) as well as still having official debates as well. As I said before though, I think a new official debate every week is a bit much at times - particularly with the amount of people taking part in them at the moment being quite low.

With lower forum activity, debates get affected :P. It tends to be the kind of topic you make. It's hard for me because I cannot read minds and like I've echoed, do not want to regurgitate old topics. They haven't been done strictly every week either, I've been following a more free-flowing way of doing them the last few months.
I'll see if it's worth re-vamping the whole system.

Yeah I know the overall forum activity has been a bit low as well :P. And I definitely prefer the idea of free-flowing rather than sticking to a schedule for posting (and possibly even ending) debates :).
Looking forward to seeing what changes are made in relation to debates, a revamp would be nice it's been that way for a while now.
