View Full Version : Plans for new PC
Hi,
I am buying a new desktop and it will be used for gaming and general useage such as facebook, hxf etc. So after much bugging of MattG asking what this is and what that does I have came up with the following:

Anybody got advice on changes I should consider etc? :)

Probs might aswell get windows 8 now?
Only thing I could suggest is a Coolermaster PSU, I've been running an 850W CM PSU for like the past 5 years now on the same machine? Never had any problems with it, think the warranty is solid and Coolermaster products in general are pretty solid. Good choice on the case (I've got Storm Scout!), may be getting the same Motherboard and similar processor to you in the future haha!
Your graphics card is decent too, could probably overclock that if you liked. :)

Thanks, I will look into the coolmaster! Not going to overclock now but I guess as a keep learning it may be something I would be comfortable in doing in the future :)

Looking at what I've seen so far I don't think I'm a fan of Windows 8 :(

Looking at what I've seen so far I don't think I'm a fan or Windows 8 :(
It does look a bit tablet stlye :P but havnt got it but from what I have heard it is good when you get the hang of it!!!!
What I'd also suggest is getting an Intel i5 3750K instead of the 2500K, 3750k is compatible with 1300/1600MHz RAM whereas 2500k is only 1066/1333MHz so you won't get the actual benefit from you RAM choice.
i5 3750k also has a higher clock speed and higher max clockable speed, and for the sake of £10 it'd be a sound investment:
http://www.ebuyer.com/349029-intel-core-i5-3570k-3-4ghz-socket-1155-6mb-cache-retail-boxed-processor-bx80637i53570k
Also get a custom CPU cooler. This is the one I use, and my case is much smaller than yours. Only thing is it's a pretty damn big heat sink, can get it cheaper on Ebuyer but heres the link as Ebuyer doesn't have much info at all on it:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-038-AR&campaign=pcm/googleshopping/PUP_Components___Cooling___Heatsinks/Arctic_Cooling/HS-038-AR&pup_c=gs

Ok, what's up with the cooler with it? :)
The cooler with it is okay, just it's not great. If you get a custom one (I suggest Arctic Cooling) you can get a CPU cooler off Ebuyer for 15 quid + add some arctic cooling thermal paste (though most AC products come with thermal paste pre-applied).
Updated my post btw on suggestion for CPU cooler, though this is also decent:
http://www.ebuyer.com/176157-arctic-cooling-freezer-7-pro-rev-2-socket-775-1156-1155-1366-ac-frz-7pr2
Just have to make sure it's compatible with your socket type!

Ah,
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-404-IN is that the exact same as the processor you posted above... I dont understand the names such as ivybridge etc and btw will that change be fan with the motherboard etc?
It is that processor indeed.
Your motherboard is compatible with that processor and also just worth mentioning, as you're getting a 660TI your mobo has PCI 3.0 enabled so you'll get much faster speeds. That processor will also take advantage of 3.0 as your previous processor did not. ^_^
http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z77V/
CPU Support list if you wanna check it out, the socket is 1155 so I think it's compatible with that fan too!

Highly jealous of you! If I get enough money I'll be getting that very same mobo & CPU haha! Got a GTX 660TI on the way already ;)

What do you use your PC for normally? Specific games etc?
What do you use your PC for normally? Specific games etc?
I use it for both general use and gaming. I play games like Planetside 2, Skyrim, Borderlands 2 & a few other games which are quite intensive. Tell you what though, if you've got the spare cash try get an SSD and install your OS on that! Sandisk do a 120GB disk for like 60 quid? My mate uses them and it hasn't faulted him once. The write/read speed doesn't have to be reallllllllllly fast to reap the benefits of an SSD. If you've got an extra 60, even use some of the space to run games on. :)
Btw dunno if you use Overclockers but they have advent calendar deals on right now, one of them is this for RAM (40 quid for 16GB!)

Unfortunately I will need to avoid the SSD this setup will bleed me try until the end of Jan haha - I have been watching the overclockers calendar (this is where im getting everything from) and its a shame I wont be buying until after xmas because there are some great deals on :D

Haha I know! I'm waiting to see if any SSDs or CPUs/Mobo bundles go on, spesh if they're intel because I will just nomnomnom snap them up :D Fair enough though, I can't afford it just yet (and my mobo isn't SATA 3 compatible anyway :()

First thing I thought was the case is a bit pricey, what website did you use to build it? All my friends are recently getting customs off Vibox and they have nice cases for a fair bit cheaper than that, but as I'm skint I'm stuck with my crappy laptop

Never heard of it or anyone mention it in my life, so wouldn't trust it a bit.
I'd prefer to use a trusted site like ebuyer, overclockers, etc and i'm pretty sure they'll get better deals :P
'Decent case' is based on opinion. I doubt the case he wishes will be cheaper on there (by looks of it you can't buy specific parts just full system?)

Anything which is 80+G will keep trucking on for a long time, coolermaster are awesome on the case side but there's nothing special about them when it comes to PSUs.
Whichever PSU you get though, make sure it's modular. Accidentally got a non-modular for my current PC and doing cable management was a nightmare.
I'd steer clear of SSDs for a little while, SSD speed increases have been stagnant for some time and I reckon as we enter the new year we might see something new cope of that. Caviar Black is a rip off though, you're basically paying £30 for the difference between a 3 year and a 5 year warranty. Any old 1TB 7200RPM HDD will be fine but you may as well go Caviar Blue or Seagate Barracuda.
The case is a bit iffy, it's main feature is that it can hold a ton of hard drives yet it does seem that you're not overly bothered by that. It'd make more sense to go for a case that's geared towards cable management instead.

and you should get a i5-3750k too or 3750 if you don't wanna overclock

I actually don't think it's a good time to get an SSD, they've not increased in R/W speeds for some time, it's almost inevitable that they'll suddenly jump in speeds sometime next year.

Innit, I was going to go for a 350MB/s because I really don't care that much! End of the day, I'm not moving a ton of files across hard drives, I'm just using it to run an OS. The speed I'd get with a 500MB/s isn't really noticeable on boot (or so I imagine).

I wouldn't go half arsed on a PSU, go for the best quality so you don't have to get another one after a year or two. Plus warranty on Coolermaster is lovely.

That power supply is a terrible choice, as I said cooler master ain't got much going on in terms of PSUs. You're actually paying MORE for 80+ Bronze than you were for an 80+ Gold. Go for your previous power supply. You won't even need a warranty with it.
The case I will insist ain't that great, sure it looks cool but the case mrwoooooooo had is about 10x better since it's actually got some cable management stuff which will actually help with performance.
Caviar blue instead of caviar black, you're literally throwing money away.

The difference between Blue and Black is that the black has a two year longer warranty, it's basically a scam though as you're paying £30 for it, in three years time that £30 would buy a 2TB drive so it's not worth it.

This is my build that i just put together couple of weeks ago. I am in Canada so with the Black Friday i got a few $$ of this. I am planning to buy an SSD then throw windows 7 on it. Works like a dream takes anything i can throw at it and it is super fast.
Come up with this:

Seriously pushing the budget now though :P

Switch out the intel SSD for a "Corsair Force 3", slightly faster and it'll be just as reliable since they both use the same Sandforce chipset.
And for good sake switch out that cooler master crap for your original PSU - OR ANY PSU RATED "80 Plus Gold".

tbh still don't see why you'd waste £30 or so on something that won't even go near 8gb even if it's cheap
would rather put the money towards a decent cpu heatsink but whatever floats your boat

Windows will happily use up idle RAM for performance boosts.

Actually this, switch down to 8GB of corsair vengeance and sink all the money you can into a decent CPU heatsink. Anything sub-£60 and you should be spending more if you can.

Seasonic. They make PSUs. And any 80+ gold rated psu with a 5 year warranty is going to be great.

Avexir apparently OEM for top RAM suppliers.
Chippiewill;
Would;
http://pcpartpicker.com/uk/part/corsair-memory-cmz8gx3m2a1600c9r
fit into this (http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/motherboards/intel1155z77chipset/Asus/90-MIBHT0-G0EAY0VZ.html?#utm_source=affiliatewindow&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=PCPartPicker) motherboard. Also would that memory be good?

yes and yes
rams only 1600mhz but i doubt youd notice the difference between that and 1866
So, i'm nearly there!
One last thing. What windows 7 should I buy... Whats OEM mean and whats the differences?

OEM is what the manufacturers get, it's basically just the CD key and the disc. none of the extra packaging which makes it cheaper.

What Chippiewill; said above, but also just that you can't re-install it on another motherboard once it has been used - or at least that's what I was told anyway :P. OEM should be fine for you though, no need to pay extra for the other :D.

You also won't get any cables with an OEM part, such as the optical drive. You'll need to buy a SATA cable.
I'm not going to read through all 8 pages of this but I recommend these changes if you haven't made them already:
Intel i5 2500k -> Intel i5 3570k
EVGA PSU -> Corsair AX750 PSU
Remove Windows 7 and just pirate a copy.
Avexir RAM -> Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 2x4GB (you definitely do not need 16GB, at all [and the Corsair Vengeance is better { and prettier } ] )
The motherboard could do with an upgrade too if you don't want minor bottlenecking.

Not everyones cheapskates who need free stuff.
Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 2x4GB.
No need for the low profile version with such a large case.

Didn't even look at the case, not sure why I decided to put low profile. I pirated Windows 7 but I'm not a "cheapskate". I spend my money on things I believe are actually worth it, and Windows 7 certainly isn't.
Seems I struck a nerve.

Windows 7 certainly is, Microsoft spent a lot of money developing windows 7 and continues to support it. Isn't fair on them to pirate it.

Yes I get your point and it certainly isn't fair for me to do that, but it all comes back to that ******** argument "...they're a multi-billion dollar corporation, they won't miss it".
I'll probably continue pirating games and software (not movies, why else would I get a blu-ray player?) until the majority of people actually start getting prosecuted for it. It's just too easy and I can't help but take advantage.
Anyway yeah, no excuse, but still.

Bit of a crappy argument. I've always bought my operating systems or got them via legit ways as I support what they do.

Indeed it is, and I commend you for doing so. It seems that when I actually have a decent amount of money I'm more willing to buy things, so maybe in the future when I'm financially stable I'll actually start paying for software.
