Garrys MOD: Addons

Does anyone know how to properly install addons because I have been trying to. I have put them in the addons folder but it has not picked them up being there?

The addons system is pretty defunct nowadays anyway, you can get addons from the steam workshop now instead. You can find it under the community tab in steam.
