The same place where 12 people were killed last year when a gunman opened fire at the new Batman premiere.

Nice spelling mistake in the title, and thread title edit isn't working for some reason :(

Ok i don't know the circumstances of this story, why the people were killed, was it just a psycho or is there a deeper underlying story behind it, i guess we'll find out when the 5th person (there were 3 people and their killer that died) is interviewed and that story released to the medias. As far as guns go I'm all for limitation laws but i don't really agree that limiting guns will drop the gun related crime rates by too much. Obviously it will have some sort of impact but people who plan on killing someone will get their hands on a weapon whether it's legal or not. It just means that the guns will be sold underground without the government being able to keep track of the weapons.

In the US it is debateable whether banning guns would bring down gun crime, since everyone already has their hands on guns, and they just have to simply not hand them in.

But the previous comments are based on that we don't want guns in the UK, whereas a certain forum member is adamant that guns in the UK is a good thing and should be legalised.

This is old and has been talked on the forum already. It was in the beginning of a shooting scene in the movie, and he started shooting people in the cinema. There was a guy that turned himself to his girlfriend and told her to fake herself death, and that's how they managed to survive.

Oh, I read the second part: He opened fire at random during the premiere of the Batman film The Dark Knight Rises. Suspect James Eagan Holmes is currently being tried on murder charges.

My bad.

Omgz another shooting! in a country of 300m+ people. There was a shooting in Switzerland the other day (a country with low gun crime but lax gun laws) and there are thousands of shootings in the likes of Mexico everyday - a country which has essentially banned guns.

So what does that prove? bugger all.

This wouldn't happen if we had more guns!!!1! (obvious sarcasm)

Who's arguing for more guns? I don't see anyone making that argument.

Yes guns!!! IF WE HAD GUNS TO DEFEND OURSELVES WE COULD SHOOT THEM FIRST!!!! LIBERTYYYYYYY!!!

You know what, you've convinced me. It's totally right that the government takes all of our guns away even though 99.9% of gun owners follow the law and are responsible. Totally right, I mean you've got to sacrifice liberty for safety right?

So what's next on our list then? because you (and the state) know best. Here's some suggestions..

- Ban salt from restaurants like in New York or introduce salt quotas immediately so that we stop the health epidemic that's resulted from people intaking too much salt - not only that, it'll save public health services a fortune.

- Introduce tough new restrictions on the internet so that we can combat fraud and child grooming easier - sure it'll mean a curtailing of our freedoms and state involvement in the internet, but it's saving people right?

- Ban drugs. A total ban on drugs, maybe even alcohol and smoking - just think of the money that'll be saved in public health costs if we banned alcohol. I mean sure, we won't be able to go for a drink anymore and people who are caught with booze will go to prison; but it's saving lives right?

- Ban frosted cereals (see news today). Does cereal really need to be coated in sugar? certainly not, it leads to bad dental hygiene and in many cases child obseity. Just THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!

- Make cycling helmets compulsory. Sure it might put you off cycling, but imagine if you fall and hurt your head? you could even end up dead. Better safe than sorry, so let's enforce a law forcing people to wear cycling helmets.

- Introducing licenses for ownership of large knives. I mean, we all need to use knives - but surely we need a regulated system where criminals won't manage to get hold of knives? together, we can end knife crime in this country!!

- Abolish innocence before guilt is proven. Along with jury trial. I mean, we can't be messing around with jurys and peoples rights when we face such an imminent terrorist threat right? let's just introduce secret courts, honestly, it's for your own good.

Yeah, I mean who needs liberty? just let the state take care of it all.

Disclaimer to the reader: these proposals are highly contagious to control freaks who will seek to enforce on others.

Ban alcohol and smoking, sure go for it. Cycling helmets compulsory, yep. Everything elses main purpose isn't to kill or heavily injure, like a gun, so banning them would be over the top.

Ey and the internet too, can't pick and choose... we all deserve protection from Big Brother. *misty eyes*

Whether the purpose to kill isn't the point - unless your saying you are against self defence?

If you want to save lives by banning guns, then all other proposals which save lives should also be adopted.

....to which my response to any state implementing any of the above is, piss off out of my life.

Under the same logic nuclear weapons should be legal and everyone should be allowed a tank since 99.99% of people wouldn't use them to do bad things. Assuming you're not insane and realise this is of course ridiculous then all we're debating is details and your point is moot.

As crazy as this sounds you have a point. They can be used, to some extent, as self defense. And who would want to take away our God-damn liberties?!!

I'll take Mustard Gas as my weapon of choice, I think that will repel anyone that tries to break in.

Nobody is arguing for weapons of mass destruction nor are they arguing for crazy weapons to be legalised - a great propaganda trick has been played on people (and because you're all naive, you take it hook line and sinker) where because it looks like an automatic machine gun... people think it's an automatic machine gun. The nozzle/extras that are put on guns in the US don't make them anymore dangerous, they're there for safety/performance reasons. The vast majority of people use guns safety and sensibly either for sport or self defence; the 0.01% you hear of are the criminals.

Don't punish the law abiding and disarm them against madmen.

The vast majority of people that use smallpox (they'll be scientists) are law abiding, does that give me the right to legalise the use of injecting people with smallpox as self defence?

Same argument with nuclear missiles, pretty sure everyone that is using them at the moment are being legal with them...

A gun doesn't have the ability to kill masses of masses of people into the hundreds or thousands, silly.

Well, I created the thread to discuss the shooting, but you have a point that all the numerous threads that were created could just be on thread in the members debate section.

Do you know anyone who was killed in the shooting? Because it's unlikely the majority of the people in this thread are going to know and therefore remember those killed in this recent event. There's nothing wrong discussing preventative measures that could of saved or prevented such an event occurring. It would be bad, however, if people started calling the victims idiots or that they deserved it.
