I always prefer Family Guy and although it's created by the same person I just dont find American Dad as funny at all.

What do you think?

I don't really watch either and I'd say I've watched Family Guy only in the past couple of years and for that I'd pick that. American Dad to me is just too similar, I know it's intentional but I don't think it's that good either.

Family Guy. Although I wouldn't really consider this as a members debate. I'd happily watch American Dad though, but it's not as good as Family Guy :)

Lol ngl, this is a poor debate. I prefer Family Guy although it's getting bored now :(

Not a bad debate at all, this forum needs some different and lighter topics.

Family Guy myself, not keen on the humour in American Dad.

What would be a good debate is whether or not this thread is considered a debate :P

(I'm only kidding before people go mad...)

It's not a debate, it's just stating a preference like all other threads that have existed like this :L

Anyway I'd go American Dad.

I love them both, I watch the double-bill of both every night on BBC3!
I think American Dad just gets it :)

I prefer Family Guy, but I probably watch them both equally. I always think that Family Guy seem to go 'too far' with the things they say, whereas I find myself that American Dad is a bit more calmer, but still quite funny. ALTHOUGH, it isn't an option, I absolutely love The Cleveland Show more than any of them, which is by the same person :)

So because I don't mention anything about the thread topic, yet mention something that has been brought up in other posts and should be considered part of the discussion, it's pointless posting?

In that case, there are many many posts that should be done for pointless posting :P And my post actually has quite a good point...

Family Guy. Way better. Although as someone said, The Cleveeland Show wasn't taken into consideration, although that is the worst of the 3.

I prefer Family Guy. It usually picks on hilarious stereotypes like the British and American behaviours. American Dad is alright, but it only really focuses on one type of male characteristic (Stan being the alpha male, dominating his own domain keeping his wife and children in place and remaining hard working and arrogant as he goes about it) which is watchable, but it doesn't involve anything colourful.

Family Guy focuses on all the family. American Dad - not so much.

I did wonder why you were caught out for pointless posting. In a way there doesn't appear to be much debate - comments like yours feature in official debates and are not pointless posting. They're not even pointless under any definition of the word. You comment has a point and that point was "is this a debate?"

I prefer American Dad lately. Roger does it for me.
Family Guy just seems to deviate from any proper storyline, it just tangents off into sub-stories and past times.

i'm not sure, i like both humour but jokes in Family Guy, such as the fights with the chicken, happen way to often and carry on for way to long now-adays. I just find it ruins the half-hour episode when 5 minutes are taken with Peter hitting a chicken

I totally agree with that. It was funny at first but now the whole chicken things boring. I also hate the Starwars episodes.

Don't worry, the moderation team have it out for me at the moment, not only do they keep -repping me, but they're just warning me for anything now :P I got given a warning and usernote for this post earlier (see link), first for pointless posting, then for posting off-topic. Yeah as much as I love Family guy sometimes it drags stuff on. I remember when suddenly they just started playing a country music video for ages and I was like is this ever going to end. It does show that it might be running its course.

To me American Dad can do so much more - you have a talking fish and the hilarious Rodger. I just think with Stan's CIA Job there's a lot of stuff that can happen that works but would seem out of place in Family Guy.

Don't get me wrong I do still enjoy Family Guy just think American Dad works better.

I think that both of the shows have great characters, for myself personally the duo of Stewie and Brian is funnier than Roger and though Klaus has some good bits in the show the 2 eccentric characters don't bring the funny to me. As far as the protagonists go, with Peter and Stan, hands down Peter all the way. The way that MacFarlane portrays him is just so randomly hilarious that Family Guy gets the upper hand for me.

Family guy. I've gone off of them both really, I started to think that they both went a little over the top with the jokes and were less funny, just more rude and stupid. I guess I'll watch them if they're on and the only thing on, but most of the times I see either of them on I just turn off the TV or turn over because they're boring. TBBT FTW.

Speaking of shows running their course. The Simpsons seems to be slowly bouncing back and that's a much older show with a lot more episodes. It's strange Family Guy seems to be running out of ideas, when it's still quite young if numbers are anything to go by.

The last few series have strangely been very good. It went down hill around the time the modernised opening credits were used, but it's become quite good since then. Worth the odd watch.

Well the family setting is basically the same; stupid dad, housewife, weird kid, fat/ugly daughter and an animal, the voices are very similar (I know some of the same people voice it but come on, create NEW voices), the picture is the same (stan looks EXACTLY like joe swanson).

It's basically the same program with different character names and faces. It's written and produced by the same guy so of course it's going to be similar but there's limits; authors don't rip off their own stories in spin-offs.

If it was classed as a spin-off, like the Cleveland show is I'd probably be more accepting (I quite like that) but it's that it's branded as NEW and DIFFERENT TO FAMILY GUY that annoys me because it's not really in either respect.

It's not a spin off because the characters were not spun off any part of Family Guy :P

But then you could say that Family Guy is a rip off of the simpsons because it has the stupid dad. It's not that it's a rip off it's just a common thing. The thing is American dad has two unique characters, Roger the alien, the most hilarious character, and Claus the talking goldfish who is funny but not on a lot. I can understand people preferring family guy but I think the shows are different and both stand up on their own.

Roger and Brian and Claus and Stewie are pretty comparable too. I do agree elements of Family Guy are taken from the Simpsons but because the graphics and the joke and even the target audience are so different that's why it works as a standalone show.

If Seth turned round and said, yeah this is based on Joe Swanson's previous life or something then I'd accept the show. I know it's NOT a spin off because there aren't the physicalities but IF some things were different and Seth said it was a spin off THEN it would probably be more accepted.

I prefer American Dad - Roger makes the show for me, and I really just can't stand Peter and Chris in Family Guy. Stewie and Brian may be good, but I really hate the multiple times each episode that I have to hear Peter say "like that one time when I..." Also, I never want to hear another Conway Twitty song again just because the writers were too lazy to make enough material for a full episode.

If you've seen the South Park episode Cartoon Wars, it pretty much sums up my opinion of FG. Honestly any of MacFarlane's shows are lower on the list for me than Groening or Reed's work. FG is still better than the Cleveland Show though.

Does this mean that other shows are the same, such as The Simpsons and their Treehouse of Horrors where most of the time it's based on another thing (like a novel etc.) I too find myself disliking the musical episodes, just because it's not my taste, but I wouldn't say that's because the writers have a lack of material.

It's fine basing an episode off of a novel, other show, etc - there's no such thing as original material anymore, everything is just a twist of something that's already been done anyway. What isn't okay is playing the entirety of an old music video that's completely unedited from the 70's that doesn't tie into the plot at all and is just there for filler, or more likely to annoy the audience.

But why should it make any difference. Saying it's a spin off or not would not change the content and it's not like Family Guy follows a serious plot anyway's where everything makes sense. If you would watch the show if it was classed as a spin off, then you must like the show and the jokes. Which makes me wonder why you can't just accept it for what it is and enjoy it as it is without thinking of Family Guy.

Is that the Conway Twitty guy? I never did understand why he was in. Some episodes do have too much stuff lately that does feel a lot like filler to m.
