So in just over 6 weeks I'm getting braces so I won't have ****** up teeth anymore

I'm just wondering on a scale from 1-10 how painful they are

obviously this is only for people who have/had them :')

Well it depends how much your teeth need changing really and the pain varies from person to person. I found my braces agonising for a good five days after I'd got them in last February and another two weeks before I could shut my mouth properly. Despite what people say, you should have no problems talking at all until you get elastics put in (if you do at all).

For the first two days after you've had them in, I suggest you plan with your parents/whoever does the cooking in your household to cook things like cottage pie, soup, and other soft things that need barely any chewing. Also make sure to follow the orthodontist's advice exactly and brush brush brush them to stop your teeth getting stained round the edges.

Oh and also you should probably stock up on paracetamol/ibuprofen and take them as often as the label lets you. Especially for night times.

ER that sounded really negative. Hakuna matata abi!! It gets better after a week or so and the longer you have them, the less they hurt after getting them tightened and things!!! Good luck :)

I had to have my four out!! Getting braces was NOTHING compared to that. To be fair, they were adult molars, though, the second most difficult teeth after your wisdoms ;/ I had a panic attack after getting them out lol and wouldn't eat for four days straight.
I hope you enjoy yourself

I've already had one of my adult molars taken out due to infection (I had 6 injections in my gum and could still feel immense pain) and I have to have the same molar on each side of the top and bottom of my mouth taken out at the same time pmsl oh goody these next 6 weeks are going to brilliant :L

At first you'll think its not so bad, but after a few hours they'll really start to hurt and you wont be able to chew on them. After a few days you should be ok to eat, although they advise you stay away from hard foods. The only other time they should hurt is when you have them tightened.

YEAH cos I panicked when he got out that huge pair of pliers and just clamped them round my tooth :( he said I was the first patient he'd ever had who didn't panic BUT THAT'S COS I WAS TOO SHOCKED the mad + uncontrollable shaking, tears and wriggling didn't kick in till I got home.

Plus I think it was worse cos one of my teeth broke in half so he had to do it twice.

DID YOUR SALIVA GO RED AFTER YOU HAD YOUR TOOTH TAKEN OUT OR WAS IT JUST ME PLS

Omg, it hurt you when you had your teeth out? I had to have four, so I had 2 out on one side of my mouth in one day, and the next 2 on the other side the next week. The worst bit about it was when they injected the numbing thing into my gum and you'd just feel it slightly and the pain was a killer for about a second, but other than that I found the process of having teeth taken out easy and fine.

When I first got braces they hurt for the first week, but that's because they were new on and moving things in my mouth, so it took a while getting used to them. Also because my over bite is so bad I found it really hard to get used to them and eat things after the first few weeks, but everything gets a lot easier and now a days I forget I even have braces.

The first week I thought the pain was awful, and probably like 9/10 but now when I get them tightened I'm so used to it and I know how to deal with it (pain killers at night) so, I'd say, when they've been tightened it'd probably be around a 6/10 for pain, and it only really lasts 3-5 days for me. Then it's all fine again and you should go back to normal eating.

Make sure to stock up on really soft foods, like noodles, yoghurts, mousse's and what not. :-)

Never had them and never will, but just thought I'd mention *kinda irrelevant to your question* that my friend has braces, and sometimes when the bit which is glued onto her teeth comes off/breaks, which happened to her quite often during first getting them on, it really hurts her etc if that makes sense
But yeah, soft foods etc. Have fun with your braces xox

Braces ache, they dont hurt :P. The best that I could describe it is a achy dull kind of pain that will be there for about a week after fitting and for a few days each time they are tightened.

A few notes about getting them on:
* Dont swallow the glue - Yeah I did this and they really weren't happy, so dont :P
* It ISNT meant to stab you - If it stabs you go back to see them

But yeah soft food for the first week I'd say, and AVOID foods like rice and bitty foods like that like the plague for the whole time when you have braces because its a complete and utter pain when things get stuck in them.

Other than that enjoy :D.

The majority of the gum around my tooth was infected and It was like that for about two years and it got worse and worse i had about 3 abbesses on it and it went inflamed while i was on holiday it was with school so i was about to go to a french dentist but the ibuprofen helped it calm down and if i ate something by accident on that side it would hurt for the rest of the time i was awake
anyway so because it was so badly infected i had 2 normal injections then 2 more because i said it hurt then 2 more when it still wouldn't stop hurting i was in tears and nearly broke my mums hand because it was that bad lol
I can't wait to have 3 teeth out and because the dental practice I go to only has 1 NHS dentist I will have to have them all taken out in one appointment instead of 2/3 separate.. Yeah I've had about a total of 16 injections in my mouth because my old dentist ****** my fillings up so they had to be redone :L

I've told my mum and dad to get loads of soup and pain killers for when I get them :L But all the pain is worth it I guess :')

I found it pretty painful when a) first getting them b) they were tightened. Pain probably lasted a couple of days and then it was fine again. I couldn't stand the retainer either after my braces were taken off... made me feel sick so I never wore it >:]

Which teeth did you have out? It depends on how deep the roots are (my roots alone were 3cm), whether or not the roots are hooked at the ends, whether the teeth or adult or baby, and which teeth they are (molar, canine, etc)

Well having your teeth taken out won't hurt at all, getting the actual braces doesn't hurt it's the tightening that hurts. I had to wear mine for 2 years and I'll be honest, for the first year whenever I got them tightened it hurt like hell, it was impossible to eat because your teeth just feel so sensitive and painful - but for some reason, after the first year tightening no longer hurt and I didn't even feel a thing...

But you'll be fine, you'll get used to them really quickly and you just have to keep thinking of the outcome because sometimes it will stress you out.

Abi; They suck when you first get them, stock up on yoghurt, mash, ice cream and other soft foods because you dont have a hope in hell of chewing! They're not really painful its just like a dull throb in your mouth, and when you get them tightened again the first few times you'll need to eat soft foods again. They're not that bad I don't regret having mine either, straight teeth fo' lyfe!

I really didn't mind having braces that much. It's was never really tighter than pressing your finger across your teeth.
Worst bit from start to finish was probably the injections when I had my teeth taken out, but that's only because they missed the veins in my hands with the needles... twice.

Should be fine really.

Mine didn't really hurt at all. Only when they were tightened and it was just an achy feeling like when you push on your teeth. And I get the same feeling when my retainers are tightened but it's really only for a day. My mum bought all this custard and jelly stuff to eat for the day I got them but I just stuck to solid foods coz it didn't hurt.

Although come to think of it, I got my bottom teeth done first then my top teeth done like a month later or something. It might have been more painful if I had had both put on at the same time.

Oh yeah and one time the wire at the end was rubbing on the side of my mouth and that hurt, but it's alright if you put the wax stuff on. If it's super painful go back to your orthodontist, but mine only started to rub about a week away from my appointment so I just left it.

my experience with braces has been so bad oh god..they hurt/ache/w.e for like the first week and it was so bad for me that the pain, starting from my jaw reached my head and in the end my whole face would hurt. attending school with that was really hard for me, and even chewing soft stuff was hard for the first2-3 days after tightening. it was impossible for me to shut my mouth so i had to sleep with my mouth open for a whole week

It hurts for abit when you get them on for about a weekish it does hurt but after that its fine, then when you get it tightened it hurts for a bit but after a couple of months of it you get used to it, trust me I had mine in for about 6/7 years... **** my life. I've had **** loads done to my teeth its surprising that I actually have any teeth left.
