David Cameron has 'full confidence' in the Chancellor, Downing Street said

Backbenchers critical of Mr Osborne are considering writing a letter to the Prime Minister calling for his to sack Mr Osborne, the Daily Mail has reported.

It was rumoured that MPs could attempt to trigger a no confidence motion in his leadership next year if Mr Osborne’s next budget does not revive the economy.

One Conservative MP told the Telegraph that although he is not aware of any plot, the “vast majority” of Conservative MPs believe that the Chancellor is “out of his depth”.

It comes after claims emerged last weekend that Adam Afriyie, Conservative MP for Windsor, planned to run as a so-called “stalking horse” candidate should the Prime Minister lose the confidence of his party.

Several newspapers reported that MPs had been approached to endorse the credentials of the self-made IT millionaire - who became the party's first black MP in 2005.

Mr Afriyie has denied that there is any plot, saying that there was "no truth to any of it" and adding that he would "never stand" against the Prime Minister.

The reports about Mr Osborne suggested that MPs could write to the Prime Minsiter following the local election on May 2.

There would need to be 46 MPs backing the plot to force a vote of no confidence by writing to Graham Brady, chairman of the backbench 1922 Committee.

One Conservative MP told the Telegraph: “I have seen no evidence of a plot but there is an almost universal view that George Osborne is out of his depth. I have no doubt that the vast majority of MPs feel that way.”

Another Tory backbencher said: "People across the party are unhappy about George -- you will not find a single MP who thinks he is a doing a good job either economically or politically. There is a lot of anger directed at him."

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said that Mr Cameron has “full confidence” in the Chancellor.

“One of the biggest impacts on our economy is what’s happening in the eurozone, which is why we are working hard to see a conclusion in the crisis… the Prime Minister has full confidence in the Chancellor,” the spokesman said.

There's also been the stalking horse rumours of a challenge to Cameron himself by 2014 - and apparently, or so i've read, 50 to 60 Tory MPs are prepared to put their names down to call a leadership ballot - currently the number who have put their names down stands at around 16, so they could very well remove him. The main reasons behind the plots of course is the fact that the EU issue and the rise of UKIP has greatly unsettled MPs with a small majority and that gay marriage has led to mass walkouts from Conservative members.

I don't think it matters much what they do anyway, as the Tory Party is finished - it hasn't won a General Election since 1992 and couldn't even win against the tired Labour Government headed by Gordon Brown in 2010. So it stands no chance of winning in 2015, barring exceptional circumstances, after which it'll likely split and collapse. I have to say that as somebody who supports UKIP, I want Mr. Cameron to stick around to the very end - he's been the best recruiting agent the party could have wished for. :P
