Okay so I have an absolutely DISGUSTING wooden desk, it has scratches all over it and just looks in a state. The obvious answer would be to just buy a new one but I can't really afford to at the moment. My question, can any piece of wooden furniture sand down? Sounds silly but I've no clue! Help!!

If it's real wood and not just chipboard covered in the wood effect stuff then yeah you should be fine. Once you've done it put some varnish or something on top to darken it a bit and help protect it

Hmm I'll ask my mum if it's wood. I knew either you or Absently; would have the answer to this :D

pfft she barely knows how to get out of bed in the morning! If you can see like any joins or anything on the edges then it's most likely 'fake wood'. Or even look at the bottom of the actual desk surface and see if it matches the top, if it's real wood then it should be the same, if it's fake wood it's normally just a smooth dull brown colour

it'll go the colour it is where it's been worn down/scratched, it might look nice when it's all like that but if you just leave it as that and don't varnish it, say if you spilt a cup of tea, that would work its way into the grain and stain the desk more permanently, but if you varnish it, it'll just sit on the top. I'm sure there's colours of varnish you can get which wouldn't be far off from it anyway if that's what you want

edit: or you can even get a clear varnish and it'll stay almost the same colour, just a tad darker
