Cant help but feel that if religion accepted science the pyrotechnics for the popes selection would be far more spectacular than a smoking chimney...
BRIT POPE FTW!

How young can a cardinal be? Me and Bolt660; were talking about this, is there an age restriction? Could we in theory get an 18 year old pope?

Don't think there's a restriction but they consider experience massively ofc, so a 18 yr old Pope is incredibly unlikely.

I thought it was like 50 or something, but an 18 year old pope is possible, even if the odds are like 10,000,000,000,000,000 to 1

Not possible. CGPGrey explained that you have to become like a priest then bishop then head bishop then cardinal then voted in as pope, or something.
Also Pope's tend to have like 9 thousand degrees in philosophy.

Pope Benedict IX was between the age of 11 and 20 when he was chosen, and Pope John XII was around 18. Young Popes can exist, but it's tradition to choose someone much older these days.
Back when Popes could be young, they were chosen through their power and relationship to previous Popes. Rich European families could exercise their influence to get a relative or head of the household into the Papacy. The Medici and the Borgia were two families that had a good handful of Popes. The Medici family had Papal relatives which died between the ages of 45 to 69 - Pope Leo X was 45 when he died, so he was a middle-aged Pope.
You didn't need to be that educated, either. Education was for the rich, and even then the rich could get away without a real education. Provided a potential Pope has power and wealth, they could easily become Pope without really becoming a Bishop or anyone of great power within the Catholic Church.
They may choose older Cardinals to become Popes because life expectancy has increased a lot more, so age and wisdom can go hand in hand together.

Also because if they turn out to be terrible it won't be embarrassing for the church for so long since they'll die quicker :P

Erm. I'm not sure on the exact age but I know that it's very unlikely that a young person would actually be elected because, let's face it, they're all afraid that a younger Pope might rebel and start doing things the "wrong" way (basically "wrong" means "not the way they think it should be" :P)

Indeed, or just assassinate them - they enjoyed a good religious or feudal killing back in Renaissance Italy :P Poison was a favourite. Popes are disposable, God can create a new leader :P

After looking, I found the youngest current cardinal is 54 years old, and the oldest 88. Usually, to become as highly ranked as archbishop (the level leading to cardinal) takes like decades of devotion to the RC Church. No UK cardinal, though AlexJRiley; think it was you xD.
The Archbishop of Westminster usually gets honoured with cardinalship, but the incumbent has yet to, leaving us to tag along with Ireland's >.>
