I've got a job interview, and they specifically said 'smart casual'. Now I'm not sure what they mean by this..

Could it be as simple as trousers and shirt but no tie or jacket
or going into jeans, polo and maybe a smart jumper?

Shirt and trousers or non-ripped/messy jeans. No tie. Smart/black shoes. No trainers.

where's it for? strange for them to give a dress code in the first place if you ask me

I would go with trousers (not jeans) which have some colour (grey, navy etc...) and a nice shirt, wear a tie but not a 'formal' knot, such as just a relaxed knott and don't do the top button up.

Again, could be wrong, depending on the place. Who is it for?

Well I bought some trousers and a blueish shirt today, I have some ties, still debatable whether to wear one or not. And it's for Apple

Smart casual's a bit of a difficult one really, everyones perception of it is different. I see most people who dress 'smart casual' in jeans though, clean ones.

I went for an interview with Apple once (pulled out because it was too far to comute) and everybody was seriously underdressed. I'm talking jeans, trainers and t-shirt.

Ahhh, It's a hard decision, 'cause I don't want to over dress but at the same time don't want to under dress.. I've been to all interviews and such in smart clothing so jeans wouldn't feel right!

Trousers, shirt. Like I said above.
Especially for Apple.

Clothing matter on interview
So better to wear nice clothing that help you in interview
And be prepare for the interview her you have not to show your clothing but you have to face interviewer so prepare for that

Smart jeans and a shirt tucked in with maybe a tie too

It depends
A lot of parties ask for smart casual, because it combines every single style of dress: smart and non-smart.
It's not too formal as in a suit you'd wear to a friend's wedding, but it doesn't mean tracksuit bottoms and trainers.

I suggest maybe a formal shirt with trousers, like a basic version of a suit, but without tie and jacket etc.

Can't look too over dressed, it shows discipline
