Local Elections 2013 - Coalition faces carnage: Town Hall boost for Labour and UKIP

THE Coalition faces carnage in next month’s local elections, a study suggests today.

Tories are set to lose 380 councillors — a quarter of their 1,450 seats up for grabs — and the control of 11 councils.

And 110 Lib Dems face the axe — nearly a quarter of the 480 seats they are defending.

The Sun/YouGov predicts...

Labour (+370 seats)
UKIP (+40 seats)
Liberal Democrats (-110 seats)
Tories (-380 seats)

The figures, based on a YouGov poll, are worse than the parties feared. A Tory insider said last night: “It’s alarming. Nearly two-thirds of those voting are in our heartlands.”

Some 2,480 seats in 35 English councils are up for grabs on May 2.

But more than one in four who voted Tory in 2010 would not do so now, YouGov found. Three-quarters of deserters will back UKIP. It could see Tories lose prized councils such as Lancashire — Labour for 28 years until 2009 — as well as Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Tories could also lose eight councils to no overall control. Labour and UKIP are poised to do well, says Plymouth Uni’s Prof Colin Rallings. Labour, on 240 seats, could win an extra 370. And UKIP, on ten, could raise that to 50.

A Labour source said: “If we won 200 seats it would be an outstanding result.”

Often it's hard to find out if your area is voting, but lets presume (for the sake of the poll) that it is. Who will you be voting for come May and for what reason? The numbers of candidates standing nationally are as follows, http://www7.politicalbetting.com/index.php/archives/2013/04/09/ukip-are-fielding-candidates-in-three-quarters-of-the-local-seats-up-on-may-2nd/

SNP as unfortunately there isn't anyone standing for UKIP and conservative are unlikely to get a majority which is a shame

I don't have a UKIP candidate so I'm unsure

I'll be voting UKIP. The only other choice than the Big 3 is the Green Party, which would be a wasted vote.

Conservatives. Interesting the amount of UKIP supporters there are on this forum (disproportionate to the rest of England).

Never voting Lib Dems for anything again, and UKIP are out of the question.

Alas I cannot vote yet. If I could I would vote UKIP.

Swindon has had a conservative majority since 2003, I don't expect it to change this year, but Labour seem to be gaining more popularity over the past few years over here.

Half the reason I am voting UKIP is so it scares the Big 3 parties further. There seems to be growing concerns in all 3 over the growth UKIP have seen in the past few months :P The other half is that some of their policies seem reasonably decent.

Apparently UKIP is expected to beat the Lib Dems at the Local Elections in the East of England, coming second or to Cons/Lab.

Labour, although I'm fully expecting the conservatives to win our region.

Lib Dems won it last time around, with the conservatives just missing out. BNP 3rd, with Labour last...

It doesn't matter who you vote for because all politicians are lying scumbags but I will be voting UKIP.

More of a protest vote than anything.

An interesting article that popped up a few days ago:

The remarkable rise of continental Euroscepticism - The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/apr/24/continental-euroscepticism-rise)

There does seem to be a rise in a lack of trust in the EU lately. I think the BBC reported on this which seems quite odd for them to reveal this trend. It does make you wonder what the results of the local elections will be - UKIP are gathering quite a lot of support possibly all because of this lack of trust and people want to protest against the main three parties or simply agree with UKIP policy.

Will be voting UKIP, must to the disgust of my Tory friends haha. Sadly my protest vote will indirectly result in to what I hate most: a labour councillor.
