Hey guys!
For those of you who do not know me, my name is Phil. I'm currently studying Childcare in Ireland and I work in the field on a part-time basis.

As a part of my final assignment I have to conduct research on a Social Policy and carry out primary research on the topic. I'm doing my assignment on Men in Childcare

There are a lot of different views on male childcare workers and I'm just hoping to collect some of your thoughts. The survey is primarily made for parents but anyone can answer it (because it's due tomorrow and I have nothing done xD). Answer it on a sibling, a cousin or if there's nobody at all, just share your views or even get a parent to fill it out (I will accept more than one submission per person :P)

I need everyone to be completely honest when filling out this survey. It's 100% anonymous so I won't come running after anyone. Be as brutal as need be, I can handle it. I've already been declined a job for being a man and a response to one of the surveys was "I would probably change the crèche if there was a male" so take your best shot guys lol.

I'll give +Rep to anyone who fills out this survey! PLEASE fill it in guys, I really need the statistics! It only takes a couple of seconds to fill out.

Thanks so much!
Phil
xx

You were declined a job because you were a male? Are you sure you can't make a claim against that being sexism.

I will do your survey :)

The didn't tell me directly. Someone close to the family works there and it was said to them that "we don't want a man in charge of the baby room". I wouldn't be able to take up a case without my friend getting into trouble. When I was on the phone to them ,they just said they think I'd be better suited for the pre-school room (I didn't even have an interview for the place) and will give me a call when something in that room came up.

Oh I see. It's a shame stuff like that happens to perfectly able people :(

Done it - probably not the best place for the survey though, given the questions were about "my child"

Inseriousity.

It's disgusting stereotyping and they'd be the first to complain if it was females being denied a job. I remember someone who worked in childcare saying that "the women took care of the dirty nappies, the men weren't allowed." Personally, I'd be like yay thank God for that but the implication that every man in childcare is a peadophile is just horrible labels. No wonder there's a shortage!

Absolutely ridiculous that people still think male + child = paedo. There is statistically a massively higher chance that a female is a child abuser than a male, and it's through ignoring these things that such stigmas get placed on the wrong people and victims are put even more at risk

I think it's something people really need to be educated on. Like, it's not the first time I've gotten it and I know it's something I'm going to have to get used to if I'm going to progress in the field. Some places are crying out for them though! Last year there were 72 people in the childcare class and I was the only male! There's a massive shortage. Guys if ye filled out the survey I'll give you your rep

I see no reason why a male can't work with children. Granted there are some vile human beings about, both male and female but more sterotypically males but everyone is different and the legit males need to be seen. I love children and would work with them given the opportunity but I would hate to be frowned upon or have parents not send their children to my work place because I am male.

If you spend a good chunk of your education in childcare, I don't see why you would then want to molester (sp?). Although some do or develop weird ideas once working with children. This post does seem a bit contradictory but it's a complicated one really.
