I finished the book in February and I really liked it. :) Looking forward to the movie - seems like it'll be great!

i'm really liking this whole making books into films thing, but one thing i don't understand is people that watch the film before they read the book! IT JUST RUINS IT!
anyway, excited of course

i understand what you mean, sometimes i'll read books before the films released but the majority of the time it's the other way round, simply because i discover the books after watching (and taking a liking to) the film. at the moment i'm waiting for this book to be delivered so i can read it first. have you read it? is it gd?
i know my friend isn't good at reading books before the film as she has a hard time picturing characters and setting without actually seeing them, and that's her reason for not reading them first, which is fair enough really.

yeah i've read it, and i think it's over hyped on the internet tbh although still good. the first few chapters are really hard to get into, i'd consider myself an avid reader and yet i fell asleep reading the first chapter...once you get past the first 3 or so though, you wont wanna put it down. i'm jealous you're about to read it for the first time, ENJOY IT!
yeah, i understand some people just don't like reading, but those that do read have no excuse!

looks pretty interesting, i will give it a watch when it comes out , spider man dude irl :L
managed to watch this yesterday. the cinema was so full, i think it was the first screening or something. but yeah it was so good, i've not seen the original or read the book so i can't comment on how well they remade it but i loved how they modernised the era with the music. it was greattttttttttttt. leonardo dicaprio is a gd actor
I was so disappointed with it :( studied it for English this year so went to see it straight after the exam and it was nothing like I expected!!!! Felt like it went on forever and some parts were so over the top and cheesy, got really annoyed with how they kept changing the quotes as well
Saying that, there were some good bits it just dragged. Leonardo dicaprio pulled off Gatsby perfectly and soundtrack was amazing but that's about it :P everyone else who studied it and saw it thought it was amazing though so maybe it's just me

As a fan of the book, I'd say the movie was pretty good. I just saw it today.
A LOT of the symbolism and themes in the book were far too in-your-face for my liking (e.g. the green light, the eyes of Dr TJ Eckleburg), whereas I thought they were so effective in the novel because of the subtlety in contrast with the complete decadence of everything Jay Gatsby, which was spot on in the film. The party scenes were just ABSURDLY extravagant which is totally the point.
I think Jay Z did a great job with the soundtrack as well, Baz Luhrmann made a good decision to include modern music. I was a little sceptical about it but it is actually really effective within the context of the film and many of the songs (and others that aren't on the album) are remixed to give it that Jazz Age touch which really works well.
It was very good, wasn't blown away by it though. To me it just felt like Baz Luhrmann was overly conscious of getting across that he understood what Fitzgerald was doing with the novel, which almost made it come across as though he was trying to teach the audience about the themes and metaphors instead of actually using them in the way they were intended. He was needlessly explicit about these things.
But I'd definitely go and see it, whether you have read the book or not. It is stunning visually too.

I went to see the film with my girlfriend, and I thought it was great! I hadn't read the book (I haven't done A-Level English you see :P) so I didn't know what to expect, and I thought it was great. My girlfriend had read the book, so like you guys she had a few issues with it, but for me, I thought it was brilliant :)
And as I always say, if the main character dies at the end, it's usually a good book/film :D
