What examinations do people have coming up? We can form a forum study group or something.

I have Discrete Maths 2 a week today. My other exams are all after half term:

Maths: Core 3, Core 4, Further Pure 2, Further Pure 3
Physics: Newtonian World, Fields Particles and Frontiers of Physics

Both on OCR, all A-Levels.

Economics Unit 2 (1 week away)
Maths S2 (2 weeks away)
Economics Unit 4 (4 weeks away)
Maths C3 (4 weeks away)

ICT coursework only finished today, so now I have no ICT at all and I can start revising - I'm very lazy when it comes to revision but now that I'm on study leave I'll have more time, much easier to get motivated in the morning and when you haven't been at college all day :P.

I find unit 2 sooo much more interesting and a lot easier as well! Took me a while to get exchange rates and balance of payments but other than that it's all pretty straightforward, only problem is I find it harder to write the 25 and 12 mark questions 'cause the topics they're on vary so much :( hoping I'll be okay for the exam though haha. Dreading the multiple choice though, they were so much harder than usual in unit 1 which I sat today so just praying they're not as bad for unit 2

Anyone else sit AQA maths C1 or C2 today?

:O Do you think so? I thought they were much more varied on econ 1, on econ 2 its ALWAYS about the use of either demand side/supply side (or both) policies to achieve objectives (i.e get out of a recession, reduce unemployment etc)

I agree on the multi choice though, most of them are easy but there's always a few where there's (seemingly...) 2 or more correct answers ;l

nope econ 1 is always should / shouldn't the government intervene or what's the best form of intervention so i basically just taught myself a formula of how to answer each :P what the questions actually about always changes though... this year i did the one on mobile phones haha. I guess yeah it's always on policies, macroeconomic objectives / a function of aggregate demand but that's still a lot more to learn than just government intervention unfortunately

multiple choice is my downfall :( stupid really 'cause it should be easy marks, just going to do loads of practice between now and friday so fingers crossed!

Just got my Year 9 SATS results back. Not too impressed with English and Science to be honest.

English: Level 6.5 (or 6B) - 51/82
Maths: Level 8.1 (or 8C) - 96/150
Science: Level 6.8 (or 6A) - 62% (can't remember mark)

Only UK people will understand the levels ;)

Hit my target in Maths, just shy in Science and way off a 7.0 in English...
Those targets are calculated like 3 1/2 years ago so how they can be accurate I don't know...

Anyway. Good luck to those sitting them this coming week and beyond!

I've forgotten how the yr 9 sats worked, was the maximum level 9 or something? 'Cause I thought 8 was really good but idk sighs. Oh and I had my 2 hr law exam today and i HATED it - We were 'advised' not to do a full question on sentencing, legal aid (we weren't taught it enough), track system or something idek and bail. All of them came up on that paper so I just went for bail because it's not that difficult compared to the others imo. The other qs i did were ok though.

C1 is easier :P You should still revise though, I retook C1 to get higher than my 71 (I think?) and didn't bother revising it, ended up with 49 :P (3rd time lucky, got 100, but with revision).

i honestly find c2 easier than c1 and also find fp1 easier than c1 tbh. probably cause i don't like co-ordinate geometry very much. Reason i'm not revising is cause basically every single past paper and mock etc has been nearly enough full marks so honestly don't see any point now.

I thought I had enough revision for D2 and stopped revising since I was getting 100 on each past paper, but got 96 in the exam in the end :P And I suppose everyone has their different weaknesses and strengths, I was the only one in my further class to like Stats :P

I also found C2 easier than C1 - I got 79 in C1 and then 87 in C2. Although, I did then retake C1 and get 89 :P So maybe it was just that I didn't revise first time round. But I find stats much easier than the core maths, I got 91 in S1 - next Friday I have S2 and hopefully I'll get 80+.

I find C3 and C4 hard - I also have both of them :(. I got 67 on C3 in Jan but I've realised if I get 80 in S2 then I only need to get 66 in C4 to get an A, so tbh I don't really know why I retook C3 :P.

But for an A you need to average 80 on C3 and C4 though, right? Or is that just OCR, I don't know.

I got 94% (raw marks) on both C3 and C4 mocks so that would be an A* for me (meaning I could get like 30% in S1 to still get an A* (A).. although I got 97% anyway lol)

Just checked and as I thought, and I'm glad :P: you need a 270 average accross the 3 A2 modules if you want an A* overall, but any other grade just goes by the overall total of all six.

Oh I thought it applied to all grades :P

From what I understand, for an A* you need to average 90% in C3 and C4 and then 80% overall.

So for an A you just need to average 80% overall? I thought the grade depended on the result in the compulsory A2 papers (C3 and C4?)

Oh I'm on Edexcel btw, not OCR :P. But yeah for Edexcel an A is 80% overall, and A* is 80% overall plus 90% average in C3/C4 (I was reading the wrong A* bit earlier).

You've read that wrong, it's 90% in Core 3 and Core 4 minimum, not an average (So 100% in C3 and 89% in C4 won't get you an A*)

And that's the same for AQA as well...

multi choice was alright, not the hardest but not the easiest (probably 20/25 which is fine)

had loadsssssssssss of time for the essay for some reason so I just wrote loads. I should get loads of marks for evaluation as my conc paragraph was 2 pages long haha :D

5 exams completed, 5 to go. ^___^

I did my Spanish ones today and I'm almost 100% sure I failed them. The listening was hard because we did it in the gym and there was a slight echo, so when the Spanish speaker was fast and loud it was hard to hear everything she said. I couldn't really complain about it as it wasn't SO bad and there was no way we'd get put in a different room. :Mini-Frown:

Economics was pretty easy IMO :D!

How did you find it @Roxy (http://www.habboxforum.com/member.php?u=46824);? :)

gahh I don't know :( multiple choice was fairly easy with the exception of the last few so reckon I've done alright on that but I picked the wrong set of questions! I should've done the balance of payments one ughhh. I think I've managed fo do alright anyway just annoyed cause I know I'd be feeling a lot more confident if I picked the other! Was a much nicer paper than Econ 1 either way. Which question did you do?

Although saying that I had 3 exams yesterday so my brain was so crammed with everything I probably couldve written an English essay in economics without even realising -.-

Only have 1 exam left now :). Anyone sit aqa English lit b or stats yesterday?

This time of the year we would normally have mid-year exams coming up but the design of things has changed so no year 12 classes have mid-years. We just have the GAT on June 12th which is more of an intelligence type thing that people tend to not take too seriously.

We were only taught Criminal law and Family law out of all for *the other 2 being Tort and Rights + responsibilities* so that's what I did

Criminal law gave a mentally ill guy breaking into a house, ending up killing 2 people (one had a heart attack due to a weak heart *thin skull rule* and the other was hit over the head, and suffered an allergic reaction to anaesthetic *causation*. He was told to do this or his mum would be 'beaten up'.
Questions included stuff like 'can duress be used as a defence', what will he be charged with in regards to death 1, death 2 and the entry into the house and more
So that was pretttty easy!

The Family Law was: a man had an affair 5 years ago, wife stayed with him anyway, have 3 kids, one of which is 17, wife had an affair and husband left.
Questions were like; what is the law on marriage around age *17 y/o* more marriage stuff, what does irretrievable breakdown of marriage mean and how to prove it, and more stuff on divorce

So basically just marriage and divorce!!

We were expecting all stuff like wills and stuff like that which we're not confident with

edit; if we're not allowed to discuss it yet, pls shoot me >.>

I did the same exam, how did you find it and which ones did you answer? Mine didn't go too great, I'm expecting only a D/C as well. My teacher this year was absolute bollocks, I practically had to teach myself everything this year out of a textbook. I've never *********** so much in an exam. had my exam today, 1-4pm without eating because i was nervous and also messed up sleeping pattern ugh. 40 mark question and 2 30 mark questions. i actually freaked out at the beginning because i was too tired to understand the questions and twist it to fit me. completely messed up my timing and left my best essay to last so only end up writing half of what i could have :( wasnt sure whether to do the 40 mark or my best first so ended up doinb the 40,my worst then my best... silly decision. so unfair how everyone else gets many exams and not 3 questions in 3 hours :/

so mad at myself but ill never be happy with what i achieve anyway lol. need a B if i wanna do 3rd year sociology but it also rests on me getting an A on my project. they're pretty harsh with what they want. anyway part of the reason i was stressing was because everyone was asking me about my exam and saying id be fine whereas generally no-one asks so i wanna prove i can do it, now feel like im letting everyone down other than myself.

AH WELL IM FREE. gl to everyone else, work hard, remember a quick plan at the beginning if its all theory like mine and relax afterwards!!

I did the transcripts for acquisition and the diachronic texts for change. I think I did better in acquisition, but far from great. In change, I really sucked; wrote about basic things like graphology and in a really simple way as well. Really let myself down!

I had two different teachers; one for acquisition, one for change. The acquisition teacher was really enjoyable and I felt safe with her, but the change teacher was teaching the course for the first time and I often found her blatantly teaching flat-out wrong information, which I had to correct -- but how much did she teach that I couldn't correct? I took everything she said with a pinch of salt, but I feel for the other students that would absorb everything she says as fact. Ahh... it doesn't matter now, at least it's over!

Probably best to remove that from your post as you can't discuss what was on Edexcel exams until like 12 hours after :P. But yeah, I really hope C4 isn't as hard. I need at least 65-70, and that's if I got 75-80 on S2, for an A overall.

A combination of that plus not revising for it much, because I had eco 2 days before which was a lot more important so only revised C3 the day before as I didn't really have to retake it :P. But yeah, everyone I've spoken to has said it was really hard (10+ people irl) and once thread on TSR opens and it can be discussed, I'll see what everyone on there is saying :P.

the general consensus on TSR is that the OCR paper was average, by no means easy but definitely not hard either.

I'd guess it'll probably be ~53/54 for 80UMS as the last question (8 marks) will have thrown a LOT of people (it was pretty hard)

Posted by Arsey on TSR:

This was a very tricky paper. I appreciate there are a lot of upset and angry feelings floating around. However, I have read an awful lot of misinformed and inaccurate comments on social media sites. You can take or leave the following comments but they are my opinions.

There was nothing on this paper that isn't on current specification. Some questions required skills that are considered pre-requisite knowledge from Core 1/2 and GCSE Mathematics. Knowledge of GCSE topics such as Ratio, Similar triangles, bounds, basic trigonometry facts is expected knowledge and does not need to be listed on the specification for Core 3.

The final question isn't a Mechanics question. I would agree that the context of the question was in a Mechanics style but it was irrelevant as to what needed to be done to answer the question. The whole context was completely pointless.

The fact that it appears that a few centres have taken the original paper is really irrelevant to those who took the replaced paper. Their results will have no impact what-so-ever on the grade boundaries for the replaced paper. Also, it really isn't Edexcel's fault that some centres made this error. I personally read the instructions that they sent out weeks ago, so really some examination officers need to be made accountable for their error.

I have read comments saying that their teachers couldn't even do the paper, or that teachers took 3 hours to do it. I am sorry but a teacher should not be teaching students A-Level Mathematics if they could not answer every question correctly (barring silly errors) within the time. I completed the paper within 40min. That said, I did originally miss the second solution to the final functions question, but that was rather sneaky.

This paper was not written at the last minute, it is very likely it was written at the same time as the original paper by the same examiner and would have probably been used next year. That said, Edexcel state that they aim for their papers to be of comparable difficulty and alter the grade boundaries accounts for slight differences. I am very interested to see the original paper, I would be staggered if it is anywhere near as hard. I do think Edexcel need to work much harder to ensure that their papers are of comparable difficulty. There has been quite a significant difference in the difficulty of some of the UK and non-UK papers. Had UK candidates took the international M2 paper, I do think there would have been a huge number of complaints.

The best piece of advice I can give is to try to put it out of your mind; the grade boundaries will be really low and hopefully this means that the Core 4 paper will be a lot nicer. Put your energy into smashing Core 4.
I hope he's right about that last paragraph, although I've heard all the replacement papers have been very hard (M1/M2 and of course C3) so I'm thinking C4 is likely to be hard as well.. in which case I'm highly unlikely to even meet my uni offer :/.

I spent 20 minutes trying random values of x to get it to work... eventually I found it, it was x=0.1

I messed up the differential equation one and the parametric eqs one (don't know how as parametric eq questions are easy ;l) so hopefully there's some error carried forward there :/
