I've said from the very beginning that the one post approval isn't on, but everyone's ignored me :P

---------- Post added 21-05-2013 at 01:38 PM ----------

Also, what captcha do we have on our registration page? Obviously they're getting past it, so perhaps we should change our captcha? They might be able to get past the new one as well, but surely it's worth a try?

They have the tic tac toe one, All of them get caught, spam bots are getting smarter and I would have thought doing something like whats 1+3838 then they put the answer in would be better

Thought so. I agree that a maths one could be better, or maybe both if possible.

Yeah that's possible.

pretty sure they're not bots

I must say I am impressed that they post in the right forum :P

But even if they're not bots, they're still getting through the system with 0 posts.

The one post approval is enabled, just somehow I think some threads are slipping through.
Sorted them

I will need to look again but when I check it seems the threads get approved which is why they show up. We even got another system in to check how long it takes them to sign up. If its less than XX seconds then they get redirected to a YouTube video. I have noticed ThisHabbo are also getting these spam accounts as well.

I shall see what other stuff we can put into place.

Kardan

Then the big question is, who on earth is approving these threads? :P
Because personally, it's looks like they're getting approved automatically, unless someone is going 'No, I will wait a few minutes to approve this next spam post'...

GoldenMerc
21-05-2013, 01:15 PM
Yeh i think they are being approved automatically also...

Kardan
21-05-2013, 01:17 PM
Also, the obvious point. It can't be approved automatically, because surely the MOD approving them would then go 'Hang on, I've approved 10 spam threads', and remove them...

Okay I've set a reminder on my phone to look into the approving threads issue when I get home tonight.

Edit: Just had a brainwave, I think I might know what triggers them to show auto. I shall update when I'm home from work.

If we need to move them out of the forum then they will need to be approved by us first, but that takes literally 2 minutes until they get moved out of view.
Some seem to be getting approved automatically, no idea how it's happening

I think an old promotion setting might still be in place. So if they post so many then it just approves anything. I could be wrong but that's one of my theories on this.

Hmm, if this was the case (let's say if you post 5, it gets approved) wouldn't we see something like:

Thread 1 - 2:01pm
Thread 2 - 2:01pm
Thread 3 - 2:01pm
Thread 4 - 2:01pm
Thread 5 - 2:01pm
Thread 6 - 2:02pm
Thread 7 - 2:03pm

Thread 7 - 2:03pm

Not sure but that's the only way they would be approved automatically. If they were approved in the first place. Will update later.

Thread 3 - 2:01pm
Thread 4 - 2:01pm
Thread 5 - 2:01pm
Thread 6 - 2:02pm
Thread 7 - 2:03pm

There is a pattern in the threads. It seems the first 5 need to be approved then it just lets everything through after that.

E.g:
Thread 1 - Moderated
Thread 2 - Moderated
Thread 3 - Moderated
Thread 4 - Moderated
Thread 5 - Moderated
Thread 6 - Approved
Thread 7 - Approved
etc.

Attempting to remember how the whole promotion system works. To my knowledge, if their usergroup/rank or whatever get changed we still wouldn't see the unapproved posts (because they're unapproved until made otherwise) however we would see newly created threads - if what Matt is saying is correct.

How many threads do the spambots even create? I don't know what the promotion system is ranked by, but I'm sure it'd not something like 5 is it?

Well, if the promotion system ends up posting all threads at once when that magic number is reached, then it's not the promotion system causing an issue, because the bot today posted them 1 by 1, and reached about 10...

Can someone post me a link to the user profile of the spam bot? Want to check one of their threads. I should be working (A)

After the bot has been 'promoted' only the new threads they make would be approved - this is assuming my memory serves me well. I could be completely wrong.

You don't work.

That would make sense then :) That means if it is the promotion system, it just needs to be turned off :)

I wish the promotion system worked for staff too, seen as 65% or more of the people who post are actually staff

They get the rank, you just don't see the stars because of the user group(s) they're in. It's the same with Donator/VIP - you don't see the stars. The stars are based on how many posts you make.

Or am I talking **** again? I'm sure I'm not, but you never know.

Haha, they get removed fairly quickly :P

That is one of the post, but it's been moved to a forum you can't see haha

But why would their normal posts get removed?

xxMATTGxx
21-05-2013, 02:16 PM
I couldn't see any normal posts for the account that got posted in here. Unless I am being blind :P

e5

To be honest, I don't actually know why this was removed. I guess as mods know it was a spam post to get it approved.

But why would their normal posts get removed?

Chris

Has been happening for a while which is really bizarre. If Matt hasn't found the issue then I'll have a look.

xxMATTGxx

Bots should not be able to post now unless they have been approved by an actual human. The reason it was happening is a secondary usergroup gets added automatically so it can be counted in a posting stats script but I've now removed it from usergroup and it should be all good to go.
