View Full Version : [Question] Signature rule issue?
Kardan

Okay, so the rule for signature size was recently adjusted, from:
"VIP members & Donators can have as many pictures as they want in their signature, as long as each picture is not wider than 700 pixels, and the total height of all pictures together, regardless of whether they are below each other or side by side, is not more than 300 pixels and the file size (whether hosted on or off the forum) is no bigger than 1.5mb (1536kb)"
to:
"VIP and Donator signature images may not exceed 700 pixels x 300 pixels in total size"
This meant that people are now allowed to have multiple images in their signature, provided that they fit within a 700x300 box, and they are no longer measured by putting each image on top of each other.
So, surely, people can have really long signatures now, putting each image on top of each other, as long as they all fit within a 700x300 box?
Example:
Take this 700x300 box:
http://s2.postimg.org/5z4ibwn89/700x300.png
Now with this new rule, there is nothing to stop someone having the following signature (all words are different images):
http://s12.postimg.org/c04cz6nop/this.png
http://s7.postimg.org/lqwetvvbb/signature.png
http://s7.postimg.org/67yywrn0n/image.png
etc...
until all words are in the signature. And it wouldn't break the rule, because as you can see above, it is no larger than 700x300 in total.
In theory, someone could have a 1x300 image, 700 times. And placed on top of one another, someone could get a legal signature size of 1x210000

What's wrong with mods just making sure the width doesn't exceed 700px and the height doesn't exceed 300px in the way that the user has chosen to stack them :S?
lawrawrrr
21-05-2013, 12:45 PM
doesn't it mean the width cannot be more than 700 and height more than 300? badly worded but yeah...
---------- Post added 21-05-2013 at 01:46 PM ----------
What I want to know is you're not allowed text bigger then size 7 in your signature
but if you convert the text into a .jpg file then are you allowed it? because it's a picture and not actual text?

Yeah, I think you're both right. My bad. I obviously can't read simple sentences :P
So basically, as long as the area of all the images included doesn't exceed 700x300, it's okay?
And I agree Laura about the text size, it's silly. You could even have text bigger than size '7' really...
I suppose the size rule is because they can't give you a word limit for your signature, but if you want large words in your signature, there's only so much you can fit :P

The reason for the size 7 rule is so that people don't fill their signature with size 7 font. It wouldn't be possible to fill an image with size 7 font because of the size restrictions on signature images.

Chris; you make no sense, size 7 font is way smaller than a 700x300 image.

You can type as much text as you want though so it could be bigger then 700px x 300px. Saying that, the rule does actually state that the overall signature must be a reasonable size.

yeah but in an image you could use text bigger than what this forum defines as size 7 and it still be within the 700x300 limit...

B2. Signatures/Avatars
Member signature images may not exceed 700 pixels (width) x 150 pixels (height) in size (unless stated otherwise in user ranks)
VIP and Donator signature images may not exceed 700 pixels x 300 pixels in total size
Signature image files (whether hosted on or off the Forum) should not exceed 1.5mb in size
Signature font size may be no bigger than size 6, however larger text must be used in moderation.
Last one on the list. :P

Thats true but what if the text exceeded that size? Obviously just depends on how much you have.

VIP members & Donators can have as many pictures as they want in their signature, as long as the combined width when side by side is not wider than 700 pixels, and the total height of all pictures together is not more than 300 pixels when on top of each other. The file size (whether hosted on or off the forum) must also be no bigger than 1.5mb (1536kb)
Non VIP members allowed to have as they want in their signature, as long as the combined width when side by side is not wider than 700 pixels, and the total height of all pictures together is not more than 150 pixels when on top of each other.
that's a mouthful.
change it to
Premium members are not limited to how many images are used, as long as the combined [width]x[height] does not exceed 700x300 pixels. The file size should be no larger than 1.5mb (external files included)
Regular members are not limited to how many images are used, as long as the combined [width]x[height] does not exceed 700x150 pixels. The file size should be no larger than 1.5mb (external files included)
Mr-Trainor

change it to
Premium members isn't clear that it's VIP + Donator, not completely clear on how image size is calculated because you're not taking in to account the way the user has chosen to stack them, and external files might not be clear that it means uploaded off site :P.

For the second one; the whole reason this thread was made was because of confusing with that, and shortening it could become more confusing. Although, rewriting it could be a good idea :).

Oh yeah, that section of the FAQ just says all normal ranks are 700x150. Also, is Habbox God 700x300?

Well of course, but what I'm saying is that it's extremely easy to get around the 'size 7 in signatures' rule, and questioning whether there should be limits on it.
Say in theory, someone (such as Kardan; at the moment) uses an image of a large font saying HI! in their signature, you wouldn't punish them
but if I, in theory, was to write HI! in the same size font but using actual text, I'd be punished as it's over size 7?
Do you get what I mean?

Yes I get exactly what you mean :P The difference is, we can't measure text to find out whether fits in a 700px x 300px box, whereas we can with an image that uses that font size. Does that make sense? Im tired. :(

I don't think it's really an issue. It should be fairly obvious if there's too much text.

Yeah but it's quite a grey area, easy for some people to get around and quite confusing for members who try to use big fonts then get confused when they're punished because they might be like WELL KARDAN USES IT WHY CAN'T I?
Part of me wants to say, implement a pixel height text rule but that's quite hard... instead of size 7 could it possibly be changed to a "non-offensive size" no matter whether it's an image or actual text text?
Which basically would mean than if there was a lot of text, then the sizing could be reduced, less text, increased? Could also add a 'at the forum manager's discretion' clause?
(there's a better phrasing there but migraine means I can't think of it)

If we want to be exact about signature sizes (Which we do because I like being difficult) then this rule has to stay.

I seriously do not follow, I can make my signature massive with size 6 text as well.

Fine if you care that much then go ahead and use size 7! I don't know the real reasons it was stopped, I can only imagine its because its big and ugly. Matts the only one who can change it anyway so its him you've got to convince, not me.

It's just quite confusing, you know, if someone saw a signature with big text in they'd think they could do the same but they can't. Because the first person has it in image and you can't replicate that in actual text no matter how many characters you might have.
Just confusing. That's all.
