View Full Version : So, I discovered a giant pond in our garden...
2 years ago now, we had a tiny little pond... After looking up and down this part of our garden, it kind of looked like something used to be there... so I got to digging and starting revealing tiny little ponds (about 6 little ponds that could hold water) then I got to an area which had a tree and plants etc on it like a normal garden... So I started clearing the area and digging, not realising how big the area was... but the soil was endless... many skips later, and a removal on a tree, I discovered a huge concrete pond! We left it for 2 years, filled in a few cracks (not properly) and filled it with water... it of course leaked and winter hit so we left it... well for 2 years lol... My mum finally decided to get someone in to finish off the work I did...
This is how it pretty much looked before they started (all they did was used a paint type thing to completely seal the gaps)
http://i42.tinypic.com/34y1hm9.jpg
Once the sealant dried, they painted it over, and at the moment we have this:

Here's a cute pic of it when it was snowing the winter just gone and filled with water lol

I personally think it is going to look amazing when it's finished.
Decoration and aesthetics are still be done after the filter is in etc and viola! I will keep this thread updated with pictures :) I do have some other pictures of the smaller ponds on my phone, but not on my laptop so shall get them on asap!
The bench in the right of the pic was made out of 2 giant matching stones we had, and I drilled in some wood, I thought it was a great touch ;)
Let me know what you think ;)
Anyone else have ponds, feel free to post :P I wanted to keep a WIP going so I can see the development :D
looks like a health hazard

BUT APPARENTLY IT ISN'T AND THIS ISN'T SPAM SO I WILL EDIT MY POST TO BE ON TOPIC.
that looks cool.

Uhmm, this isnt spam :P
I'm always wanted a pond in our garden! They're so nice! Mam has been talking about it for years but tbh it's my mother, it's all talk and that's it lol. Make sure to post a pic when you're done!
They're awesome. My mum is really enthusiastic about having it done so was happy to pay for the completion of it :D I can't wait for it to be done ;) Taking more pics tomorrow as hopefully they should arrive with the pump!!

I'm not asking you to share prices or anything but did it cost a lot to do? You should put big goldfish in it!!
looks like a small child could fall in
Well since I did most of the hard work the cuts were cost down I guess. It's going to cost in excess of £1000 but thats for the blade fountain we're getting and the filter and pump which all add up aswell as the paints and of course the labour.
We can't put anything in it for a while as the paints are toxic to the fish, but that will go away eventually. We're going to get some gold fish and see how they last in the pond as they're only cheap to sacrifice (Mean I know :P) and then after a year, I'm hoping to get some Carp in there, but investing in a net so the herrens dont steal them ;/

Pricey enough so! Well worth it though! I think they look fab! OMG HERRING'S? You only see thme in the zoo here :'( Do you not think a net would ruin the look of it?
No the net would kind of me almost invisible, and definitely worth it to keep your fish in haha because carp are expensive :( although my guys doing it didnt suggest one, or said we could have one hung over, but i'll leave it to the pro's to decide :P

Oh well if they're pretty much invisible that's not so bad! Especially if the fishies are costly! I wouldn't like it hung over if I were to have one but that's just me :(
I was like hmmm when he said it, don't think it would look that good either, but ya never know haha

Pretty cool, good to see somebody bringing a pond back as they're really swarming with wildlife (even the small ones). I dug a filled in one up similar to that - have to say not my style though, much prefer the natural looking ones where the lawn simply slopes into the water. :P
But any pond is better than none! do post some pictures when you've completed it.

Haha oh dear! Yeah hoping to get some carp in it :P Hopefully with the constant moving water in the pond it shouldn't freeze over in the winter haha :)

Thank you :) Yeah, i quite like the natural kind of looking ones where it is like you said, but this was just already there and I discovered it and it's perfect location for my garden (as it's where you walk in my main gate and see it!) I'll get some pictures up. They're coming tomorrow to completely do around the pond up (more money, typically ) so should look amazing!
Total expenditure is pushing 2k now :'(

First of all, you have a future, having the patience to move a tree, dig wholes, wow, I'd have lied in my bed waiting for my brother to do it or for someone to be hired to do it. Really good job. :Thumbs-Up:
Second, please tell me where you live 'cause I want a garden just like that. xD
Must be a male thing to like to manual labour haha ;)
Come to Leeds and visit me :P

Lol most likely, yeah. xD
Don't tempt me 'cause even though I might be in Portugal, next year I'll move to Scotland and Leeds will be in my way to London. Lol, I live in a 12th floor and we don't even have a balcony. We only have one upstairs where the pool (now without any water, amazing -.-) is, kind of a terrace. So pool with no garden or garden with only a pound? Hm.. is your garden full of little bugs? :x

Yay, okay, then I will consider it. I love being in my grandparents' house and just waking up with the birds singing. I guess that's what you have there too. xD
Thats bloody annoying, i like my sleep ;) But yeah that happens if I sleep with my window open haha

lookin good so far!!
I've always wanted a pond but I've never got around to getting one sorted, but they always interest me with all the bugs and animals it attracts, and it's a pretty site anyway.
Omg Elliot that looks lovely! I WANT ONE :'(

Urgh, suddenly have pond envy :P It looks good, it will be quite a novelty item in your garden. Mine is a natural one with a mud/clay bottom which filters through the ground, which is useful to stop flooding, but the sides can erode away making it hard to dig out - which is where the jealousy comes in :P

Thanks!
The feelings great once it's finished! Just been outside now in the dark and it looks amazing. can't wait to get the lights on it... going for a blue light on the blade fountain and getting some red/blue/green alternate lights inside the pond! gonna look fab, I think :D

That looks awesome! We had a pond until recently. We had fish, frogs and I bought some snails but they ran away LOL. I came home with some ducklings too, I just thought once I had them it would be cruel to sent them back so my parents couldn't do anything. The fish were huggeee, I don't know what they were but the duck's couldn't eat them. I loved it, but we took it all down and built decking over the top of it :(. The duckies now live with my horse, as I couldn't give up them haha. You need to post pictures once it's complete. It'll be awesome.

Crazy what a little work can do. Ponds are peaceful. :)

Ducks destroyed my pond. Any more than 2 or 3 and they just begin eating away at the vegetation in and around it. There's a reason you never get ducks and lilies in the same pond :P Duckings are even worse!

We will eventually fill it with fish, but with the pond paint and sealant we used, it's toxic to fish, so we will have to do a few water changes first before getting fish in, so probably in about 4-6 months :D
Thanks for all your kind comments guys :P
