View Full Version : Apple WWDC - 10-14th June.
Hi all - it's been a hell of a long time :)
In case any of you hadn't heard, Apple's major keynote event of the summer takes place next week.
Here's a rumour roundup of what's expected/anticipated to be announced in their event on Monday (10th - 10AM-12AM American time):
iOS7 - a major revamp to the operating system shipped with all of their mobile devices.
Screenshots from the WWDC app (released today) show a graphically "flatter" OS... your opinions on this one?
http://s15.postimg.org/4kltiodfv/Screen_Shot_2013_06_03_at_20_44_34.png
Improvements to OS X (though the big cat it's named after is still under debate). Those rumoured include tabbed finder browsing, the addition of Siri, full-screen apps for multiple displays (others inc. fast app switcher (like that with iOS's double-tap the home button)).
Safari is said to be getting an update which will include faster loading times - the ins and outs of, no one seems to know though.
iRadio - Apple's answer to Spotify, Pandora and Rdio. Rumours rooted in the deals being made between publishing and content-creating sources (major labels, etc). Not too much on the functionality or whether it will actually appear this time round yet though.
iPad Mini 2. I've got a feeling we'll be left a little underwhelmed at this one. Incremental updates are probably gonna be the only thing we'll see - retina display, better camera, bit faster and probably thinner and lighter.
An upgrade in processor for the Macbook Pro and Macbook Air is pretty much concrete now. Though, a little unexciting to say the least.
If you find anything more, post it in here. Let me know what you think! I'm a bit of an Apple fanboy nowadays so expect a tough fight you androiders ;)
-----
Things that I'm personally NOT expecting to see: iTV and iWatch. Still too little information out their to really suggest we'll be seeing them this early in 2013.

As an iPhone user and since it's the only Apple product I have - I am interested to see what they have to say about iOS 7 for sure.

Bye bye skeuomorphism. It'll be interesting to see how Apple manages this without looking like a Windows Phone / Android rip off.

Apple has always had good integration between devices but I'd like to see further improvements. Something that allows better native integration between Mac, iPhone + iPad would be good...

Looking forward to iOS7, waiting on the new MacBook Airs for an upgrade to the new Haswell CPUs.

Hi Harry... so surreal actually coming back on here...
Yh, I agree. iCloud needs sprucing up a little but I've never really been displeased at how easy it is to transfer stuff between all of my iOS/OS X devices tbh!

I'll hang fire on iOS7 till I see some pictures of it.
Macbook,There probably will be an update, not to fussed as I just got a rMBP, I don't think they will drop the non-retina however, its too good of a seller.
iPad Mini - Again, not to fussed, just got one, I doubt there will be any ground breaking updates.

Not a big fan or follower of Apple but I heard that Apple has a new re-designed Mac Pro (Tower) possibly being revealed at the event. I've heard that a lot of power users haven't been happy with the lack of updates to it recently.

I can understand why they'd be annoyed - aesthetics are something that Apple are extremely good at and the Pro has never seen anything major happen in the past 3-4 (maybe more) years.
I really really really really really hope this isn't going to be incremental updates across the board again - a new product would be really nice.

I think the big problem isn't really aesthetics but more specs. They seem to have been regularly updating all their main lines but the pro users which probably spend the most haven't had any updates for ages. I'm sure I read the specs are well dated now.

I read they're going with the more of a flat design approach which is all the latest trend now, I hope they don't go too flat though because personally I think the likes of the flat design on say the windows phone is ugly as hell. Simple, yeah but also ugly imo.
Anyways don't like the look of that screenie, surely it's probably 90% going to be fake anyways. Looks like a winterboard theme more than anything...

Someone who has access to the BETA's leaked it yes but wouldn't allow them to use actual screenshots because of the fact the testers have their own personal watermark on the pictures to stop leaks, hence why they had to make their own mockup of it.

And you are right that they couldn't in the past, but Apple phones never had the control centre or the new photo organising app - but I won't now say "well yes, but you never used to be able to do so" :L

This, If you pay the £60 or so a year you have access to publishing apps, and you get all the BETA's..
Or just use a site where you can pay to have your UDID added to a dev account.

The Mac Pro looks quite cool, definitely a step forward in the desktop market as far as design goes (sleek and small), but this could be a step forward towards a solid, brick wall - seeing as desktop PCs tend to be slowly dying these days. All in Ones like the iMac have been slowly taking control of the market, and even then it's not been exception control and growth. I can't imagine it would be cheap to buy either, or easy to customise which, from what I recall, made the Pro reasonably popular (and I say popular in a diluted sense of the word).
Not sure about iOS 7 though. It looks like something you need to see in person, because from the pictures it looks a bit cheap looking, although that's probably an improvement on the seemingly dated previous designs.
EDIT: The link someone posted to "10 Awesome iOS7 Features..." was interesting. The first picture of the unlock screen looks an awful lot like the default Nexus screen (pale, opaque orbs floating against a darker shaded background) with a digital clock that looks very similar to the Android digital clock. The keyboard looks a lot like Google Keyboard too, which was updated recently - not forgetting the same image also shows a search box that can be accessed on each home screen 0 which Android has had for some time too, although iOS 7 has made it so it is hidden in the notification bar (another similar Android feature) for when you need it.
If it wasn't for the icons, you would think this was an Android device on first sight :P

Saw iOS7 previews the other day on Apple's site, wow it looks great. It's much tidier and clean, love that it's colourful.
Although not sure if it's just me, but doesn't actually look like an iPhone design anymore? Could be just me, but can't wait to get it on my 5. :P

I thought that at first, but once you look at it a bit more you can still tell it's an iPhone :P. Although, for some of the apps like the weather one I wouldn't have guessed it was on iPhone (built in).

My views on this;
As heartwarming as the case studies are, I would note that Apple didn't actually do ANY of the work involved for these apps. They show off how they are helping Africa, why not put some of that $150,000,000,000 cash pile towards eradicating malaria, a disease that kills 1.2m annually, causes brain damage in many young children destroying any chance they may have once had at escaping the poverty cycle. I totally respect Apple is a computer business, but it almost angers me how they try and show how incredible they are based on OTHER PEOPLES work. Furthermore, all these wonderful applications that can truly save lives could be truly incredible if Apple could release a cheap version of iOS for these countries (lock it down to only work with select apps if they must).
Undeniably those apps are incredible, and it is great they work on iOS - but the case is simply that these apps COULD work on WP, Android etc if they were developed for it - Apple really hasn't paved the way for this to happen, and my god if they really wanted to make a difference, that $150Bn would go one hell of a long way.
Looks lovely, looking forward to using it. Probably won't need to jailbreak anymore after seeing the features, they've raided a ton of features on Cydia Store such as the Control Center (SBSettings\IntelliScreenX) & unlimited folders (Infinifolders). Hear it's proper unstable at the mo though, so best steer clear.

I don't think they are trying to take credit for the apps that have been created. They are showing off the apps on iOS and how some of those have changed lives or made lives easier. They are showing that apps on iOS are making a difference and they are. You can't deny that fact, any other platform can also do this but Apple are showing the apps on their platform which is obvious. (Most of the apps they have shown are also on Android but that's up to them to Android suppliers to advertise that)
None of the people in the video are from Apple either which also proves my point. They are basically advertising what their products can do with the apps that people have made. They aren't misleading anyone in the video staying no other product can do it.
For those discussing Apple stealing ideas and what not (I assume most of this thread without even having to read it, predictable enough eh?), check out this article. It's about iOS 7's influences, and the design work on the actual article is beautiful:

Read that a few minutes ago and I agree with one of the quotes/statements
"The issue isn't whether Apple stole, it's whether it did a good job of it"
At times you have to take ideas/features from other companies as it does actually make sense.

Completely agree, there's copying and then there's making it better. I think Apple have subsequently done a mix of both looking at the OS from pictures. One of the bits I loved was about how the Android back swipe actually came from Nokia, so does that make Android the copy? :O Just kidding, it's improvement on innovation.

Really? I'd say "Apple - Making A Difference" is 100% giving themselves the credit for it, I mean that is blatant... if they weren't they would have titled it "Developers - Making A Difference". I don't mind companies claiming credit (which they HAVE implied in the title alone) - but please, only if they made that life changing app, or they stopped being disgusting and sitting on a monumental pile of cash.

Please, most or nearly all of their videos contain the word Apple at the front. Apple changed we looked at apps and the mobile industry when they brought their first phone out. Apple do donate to charity and even more under Tim Cook. Yes the apps they have shown can and do work on other platforms. Advertising is advertising at the end of the day and Apple do a good job at it.

Maybe they want to keep it for a rainy day, I don't know why people get upset over companies sitting on cash they have earned due to the products they sell. Fair enough if it's about the tax crap but leave them to do whatever they want with the money.

I would hate anyone who simply sat on excessive piles of cash that they simply don't need, PARTICULARLY when they make boasts about how much they help people in need. I respect the individuals here for example; http://givingpledge.org/ - those who recognise they don't need the stupid amounts of money to survive. Investment in Africa, for example, could benefit Apple anyway (rise gdp = higher incomes = more products sold in Africa). Mind you, if they did the same in Asia their labour costs would rocket (hey, Foxconn!)

Yes, because Apple has always been a company that likes to think "well we could do worse" - is this not a company that thrives of doing the best they can? The $8m donation to China was not really optional, given the huge anti-Apple coverage over the continued Foxconn incidents - that is CSR.
Apple happens to have the largest cash pile, yet doesn't make it into the top ten when it comes to donating money (or spending it at all, apparently). I am not saying they should give away $150Bn, of course I'm not. Just I don't think a company should be boasting about how it is helping people when in reality, it simply isn't.

I got the feeling that the video was showing how the apps are helping people make a difference, not apple making a difference themselves.
Also, I think Apple is rather charitable as they match employee contributions to charities.

"Quite charitable" - give considerably less than the other two giants (Google and Microsoft), yet are sitting on FAR more cash. Whether people think firms should give to charity or not, one cannot claim they are charitable lol

It does, but I think it is time people just accepted this is the way to improve things - although I do find it a little ironic given all the patent disputes Apple dishes out!
But they have taken some UI elements, and well, made them better.

Thank God our feelings are mutual! :)
Indeed, but in the context of the Consumer Electronics industry, Apple are far behind the big three. Furthermore, Apple are sitting on the LARGEST cash pile. My issue with Apple is that they are doing absolutely nothing with it. This is WWDC (about Apple) and started over a post of an Apple video about making a difference - therefore moaning about Exxon Mobil would be pointless (poor example, as they actually donate huge amounts and still make a great profit :))

I wouldn't mind a company not helping local communities (or overseas aid as you have assumed), I just think it is wrong to needlessly stockpile money for one reason and one reason only; to have the most. That to me is wrong.
Also on the iOS thing, I am not sure Siri is better than Now...i'll wait for a true comparison to decide that. The signal bars.. unsure how they took that from Android or Microsoft, but w/e.

In regards to Siri, it's the one thing on iPhone that always comes to mind when I think of something that could be a lot better. I've used Google's voice search in the Google app and it's so much more accurate, most of the time. I know they've improved the looks of the Siri 'page' and it can do more now, but have they improved the voice recognition and all that? In regards to iOS 7 overall, it's not just the battery icon and the signal (I think I prefer the signal bars tbh) but just the whole redesign makes iOS look a lot more modern, plus it has loads of new features/functions that have the same effect and I personally can't wait to use it for myself :P. But yeah, idk about the signal circles(?) :P.

Even if Siri is now on par with Now (I cannot confirm this, but I seriously doubt it is better, given the event that I watched), Android 4.3 isn't far off, and Google will just improve it making the lead bigger again. Playing catchup is no fun for anyone haha

Ha so true. My problem with fanboys evident from a debate about ios, iphone etc. last night with someone is that a lot of fanboys seem to be only able to see the positives. This isn't directed at just Apple but fanboy's in general.
I prefer Android but I don't mind the iphones (although my girlfriend thinks I hate them) however as someone who likes technology I can list both the positives and negatives for both of them. The person I was debating with couldn't accept that iPhones/ios had bugs and stuff and after I showed him a changelog to prove that fixes are often put out he was like I don't care it's the best ha.
It's why I avoid some review sites. I know a few friends who like chris Pirillo but I can't stand the guy because for someone who calls himself a professional software reviewer, he misses all the bad stuff from Apple products but has no trouble finding even the smallest pointless problem with anything else. I know reviewers have their own opinions but some tend to be very careful what they say about their favourite techs, as if by saying something bad they can't call themselves a fan anymore.
Just enjoy the platform you like, bloody hell!
