Australian PM Kevin Rudd has signed an agreement that will enable Australia to deport refugees arriving by boat to Papua New Guinea
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has warned that all refugees who arrive in the country by boat will be resettled on the island nation of Papua New Guinea as his government struggles to stem an influx of asylum seekers.
Mr Rudd and Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill signed an agreement in the east coast city of Brisbane that will enable Australia to deport refugees to its developing neighbour in the south-western Pacific Ocean.
"From now on, any asylum seeker who arrives in Australia by boat will have no chance of being settled in Australia as refugees," Mr Rudd said.
The move, described by Mr Rudd as "very hard line", aims to deter an escalating number of asylum seekers who travel to Australia in rickety fishing boats from poor, war-torn homelands through other countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia.
The growing influx is a major political problem for Mr Rudd's party, which is the clear underdog in elections expected within months.
The policy was condemned by refugee and human rights advocates.
Australia is facing a General Election at the moment and Rudd may well have sealed the deal by signing this excellent piece of legislation which will put a complete halt to unwanted third worlders arriving in Australia. Tony Abbott (leader of the opposition ALP) will have to match this/out do Rudd if he has any chance of winning as the polls are very tight at the moment.
But you know, often it's said that when parties want to control immigration that it'll never realistically happen and we should just accept open borders as a fact of life. It's also often said that without thousands of third worlders arriving on our shores, our economy will collapse - which is complete and utter bollocks. This story and Australia itself smashes both these falsehoods and goes to show that you can control your borders (provided you are not a member of the EU) and it's not racist, xenophobic or economically insane to do so... indeed, it's economically insane to not control your own borders.
Hope we see these kind of policies in Britain over the coming years, as open borders are unacceptable. Well done to the Australian Labor Party doing what left wing parties who claim to care about the poor ought to do - and that's protect low skilled jobs from the influx of cheap labor from poor third world countries.
ALSO adding on to this article, here's an unfolding news story of third worlders on the Australian island of Nauru rioting and burning down buildings because they don't like the new policy - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/australiaandthepacific/nauru/10192187/Asylum-seekers-riot-on-tiny-island-of-Nauru.html
If there's any justification for this policy, it's to keep third world thugs and trash like that out - and they've just proved it.
Thoughts?
