Basically I've got a job this year for while I'm studying which will mean I'll be able to travel next summer. I've looked at STA Travel because they do student deals on things like this: https://www.statravel.co.uk/rtw-the-mighty-mighty.htm. I was wondering if anyone had any advice before I start heavily researching - about how much it will really cost/spending money/companies to use etc etc.

Thanks :).

One of my mums friend travelled the world, I think she was gone for a year and took about 20k which she had saved up. It depends how long you're planning on going for and how you're going to do it. Hostels, hotels? Basically though, you'll probably need a lot of money. STA seem really good though for student deals. You just have to search around and find the best deals, best advice would be actually go into STA because I know they're really good with advice.

Alright thank you, for me it'd probably only be for up to 6 weeks over summer so I wouldn't need/have anywhere near the £20k. I'd have £3k at most.

Hey :)

I am going away for between 6-8 months at the end of December this year. 6 weeks certainly isn't enough to properly "travel the world", I'd suggest seeing a few countries. I would also ignore these sorts of companies - I am doing it totally independently, and have rarely found STA Travel to actually have a deal that is even remotely close to the independent price.

Australia is really really expensive for travel, $80 a day is not at all unreasonable to expect, which over 6 weeks would mean $3360, excluding flights. Travel is also very expensive in Australia (for a backpacker). I've decided to completely avoid it on this occasion, and just go to India, SE Asia, then across to Africa. SE Asia is doable on $25 a day, although I will be taking between $30-40 per day. Africa is looking likely to be at least $40 per day. My budget for SE Asia is actually going to be more likely $1000 per month (yes I am in the UK - but most travel information is in USD!) I am hoping to have about £5000 for the sixth months, which is looking like a realistic target, and is definitely a backpacker budget (ie. hostels, cheap food, but plenty for activities).

My only recommendation so far would be to not try and do too much and spend a little more time in each destination, and if you can go independently (maybe with a friend? :)) Would definitely recommend wanderingearl.com as an excellent travel blog, nomadicmatt.com/travel-guides/ for some excellent destination guides and lastly, travelindependent.info for good country information, albeit sometimes a little dated. When looking for flights I strongly recommend skyscanner.net and momondo.com :)

I am going with a friend, although two others may now be coming around India with us. I would gladly give you current information once I am on the road (I intend to update friends and family via a blog of some sort, to avoid missing anyone out!)
