Hey,
I'm looking at getting my first car soon, and I've narrowed it down to 2 choices. You may think they are odd choices but I love the classic sporty car.
MG Midget:

Triumph Spitfire:

If you have any opinions which looks better, or know much about the cars, just let me know! Also, if you know of any similar cars, feel free to make suggestions!
Thanks.

Love your choices, all I'd say is check the insurance prices online before you buy... you don't want to buy it and then realise you can't afford the insurance.
Best of luck getting insured on a classic car. Assuming your pretty young and not long passed, it's not going to happen I'm afraid :(
Props for picking two British cars though!

My sister is a teenager and can barely get insured on a 1.1 ... so definitely check that out before.

Saying that is completely untrue. Classic car insurance is infact available for new drivers often at a cheaper price than the average teenagers car. This is because less accidents are seen in such cars. If you're interested in classic car insurance yourself I'd recommend looking at Lancaster, Footman James or Adrian Flux.
EDIT: I should probably add though that insurance on cars like this usually comes with a mileage limit, and conditions such as they are stored in a garage, however its easy to bargain with certain insurers ;)

Just don't give up too many of your rights... like that condition whereby you can only drive between 7am and 11pm. I think that's stupid to be honest, I see a lot of kids getting bogged down by silly insurance conditions.
I love your taste though and if you manage to get yourself insured then that's excellent pal! I don't know the best insurer to go for if you're a new and young driver, but I have used Admiral for 7 years, they're pretty cheap.

Nope, it's pretty true. As you said, classic cars you also have limits, not 100% on them but i'm sure you can't drive it between the hours of 23:00 and 7:00.
Surely it would be way more practical to drive a more modern car and maybe run a classic as a weekender? Oh and I know most specialty insurers don't insure young drivers (Adriux Flux definitely don't)
Check this thread out, it may be a little outdated now though; http://www.habboxforum.com/showthread.php?t=665461

I don't plan on getting bogged down with some stupid conditions, I love night cruises so that's a definite no go ;)
I've also been offered a Triumph Herlad convertable that my dad restored for £200-£300 which is super cheap, needs about £300 worth of work doing. So it would be a major bargain. Not sure if I look the look of the herald though.

And Jord, it may be more practical to drive a modern car but it isn't as fun ;)
When you bargain with insurers you can actually get a cheap quote with reasonable conditions so I'm gonna give it a go!

Disagree with that. If you want a fun car, get an S Chassis - you'll never look back.
I drive a a quite heavily modded car and trust me, it's definitely not easy to bargain. Most companies won't insure any modifications unless your over the age of 21, some are 25. Give it a go by all means but realistically it is much more practical at your age to go with something sensible :P

It depends on the insurer you try to bargain with, at the end of the day they want your money and they know they can cover an accident even if they charge you £1, its a risk they are willing to take if you provide the impression you love your car - as someone who loves the car is more likely to be careful. Thats why being in an owners club or forum can also reduce insurance costs by 10-15%.

Never seen someone wanting that type of car for their first :O
How much are you looking at to buy one? And if you've looked at quotes for insurance, what prices are you getting?
Also Pezza; by 'barely get insured on a 1.1' do you mean because the prices are all crazy?
I'm 17 and my first car is a 1.4, and my insurance is far cheaper than I expected it to be :O

Matts;
Yeah lol, the prices are stupid. She looked at 1.2 and it worked out cheaper than a 1.1. I just meant that it's not guaranteed even at the low CC cars. She got off lightly to be fair.
A friend of hers got quoted almost £3,000 for a bloody corsa.
It does go down though eventually. I'm 25 this month and it is supposed to drop a ton so I'm looking forward to that. But then it did drop quite nicely after I was 21. I drive a 1.8 Honda Civic and I pay 580 for the year.
Although it pales in comparison considering my dad drives a 3 litre Mercedes and it costs him 150 for the year lol. But then he's been driving over 20 years.
Insurance is mental in the UK... Americans, don't come here!

Mine is just over £2000 for myself as the main driver, and my 17 year old sister and my parents as named drivers (my parents have never driven it but want to be named just in case)
My car is a '12 Corsa 1.4 SXI- I'm assuming my insurance is pretty cheap then? I certainly was expecting it to be a lot more but I don't really know anything about cars or insurance :P

Yeah £2000 is cheap for a 17-year-old new driver in this day and age. You'll be lucky to get it for less. These companies sponge so much from new drivers and especially teenagers. A good way around it is to put a parent on as a main driver. This will lower it usually by quite a bit, but then it'll still rise once you name yourself, a person who's just passed, is a teenager and has no NCB.
My dad went on as main driver for my sister because he has over 20 years experience plus around 18 years of NCB.
The money they charge for insurance isn't worth it but they can get away with it sadly. It's just going to go up and up. They say they charge more because the drivers are less experienced, but how can they expect people to gain experience if they can't afford to run their car in the first place!
Oh well.

Good job you didn't declare the mods... hate to think what the price would be. Did you just put it in to find out the price anyway? I'd be curious to see what ridiculous prices they came up with.

Did try but nowhere would insure. Stupid looking back at it, any accidents and insurance would have been automatically void.
Declare your mods kids!!!

Yup, even things like declaring that you store your vehicle in a garage when you don't can void it. But a lot of people do it to get the insurance down, I must admit I did it in the beginning too until my insurance dropped and my NCB climbed.
Mods have never really interested me to be honest so I've never had to worry about that, but it's bound to be extortionate to insure, especially now. Insurance kills the 17-21 age bracket massively.

Its disgusting tbh. My mate had his insurance void because he had a bumper sticker not declared. Literally do anything not to pay out at the moment.

I have a vendetta against Midgets, they're really common where I live and clutter classic car shows (I.e. Oh, another MG). And the fanbbase are really quite a strange bunch, just people that want to be associated with a cheap classic car they didn't restore and know nothing about.
I'd take the triumph any day, they're more interesting and much more desirable! If you weren't oppressed by insurance prices I'd champion the Triumph Stag because they're beautiful and so comfortable.
Nevertheless it's an X reg 1.0 Polo for me. Fully comp £1100 for my second year with Hastings. Had a tracker on my first and it was £1800. I got fined £100 because my dad used it to get milk and drove during curfew.
