Just read that the current CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, who replaced Bill Gates, will be stepping down in a years time with a committee including Bill Gates looking for his successor.

What do people think? Was this planned or did he decide to leave now after Windows 8 has failed to gain the audience it hoped?

Probably been planned for a while to be honest. Hopefully the replacement won't **** up anything even further.

Never fond of Steve Ballmers style as CEO.
He's also leaving Microsoft in such a bad state.

He is pretty terrible as far as CEO personalities go. He's pretty stupid in a way, his way with PR is awful. Microsoft needs someone creative and intuitive to lead it, not someone who jumps around on a stage during keynote speeches.

I'll always remember this interview from him.

If there is anything that they failed at doing in the last good couple of years, it's definitely mobile for sure. They missed the opportunity for the smartphone and tablet area.

Hopefully a 'fresh' pair of eyes might get Microsoft going a little bit more and stop it being a joke!

Agreed. They were there before iOS as far as I remember (Windows Mobile 6?) but for some reason they never bothered with the idea of making it mainstream and stylish, to appeal to the masses - especially our generation who would enjoy anything like smartphones as we are the tech-savvy generation. Imagine if Microsoft brought Windows Phone to the market alongside iOS, they could have evolved into something spectacular.

You know a company is going to go to pot when they start shrugging off a competitor's creation. Look at Amstrad and Microsoft, they saw something that was the future and said it wouldn't work. By saying that, you're admitting you're out of ideas and getting ready to stagnate.
