Is the return of Sharon Osbourne to the X Factor enough to freshen up the show?

The X Factor, now in it's 10th series, has begun on ITV and will run until Christmas. This year's show has marked the return of firebrand judge, Sharon Osbourne, who has replaced Tulisa as the fourth judge. The change has come amid a slight decline in viewings over the past couple of years along with complaints by the public that the show has grown stale. The other changes in the show this year mark the return of auditions in the room with just the judges rather than the public auditions which many felt took away the humour from the bad auditions.
Others will say that the show's format still remains stale and that the judge lineup is still rather dull, with Simon Cowell again not in this years judge line up. So what do you think? is the show still capable of producing artists such as One Direction, Olly Murs, Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke or is it past it's sell by date? does the return of Sharon Obourne freshen up the show or is it a meaningless change? (or a change for the worst?)

The show was only good at the beginning because it was something new, the market for talent shows has died to put it simply, it has low market share and low market growth (the dog). Everyone likes something new and innovative but now it's just not cutting it. Simon Cowell was definitely the main judge for several years and when he left I'm sure the ratings dropped even more, even if Gary Barlow was good.
But if we're to talk about Sharon returning I believe it will do nothing if not just make things worse, considering she doesn't have a fanbase... Her voice is just annoying and she's just pretty lame.

No but I enjoy watching her, probably wouldn't of tuned in if it wasn't for her and the other changes

What other changes? The fact they do it in the rooms? That's to give the illusion that it's going to be as good as it used to seem, but it's still the same old stuff, nothing new.
Well Sharon is a definite improvement from Tulisa anyway. I enjoyed the first two episodes and think she will be a good laugh. Still haven't warmed to Gary and I really miss and feel the show has suffered without Simon. I'm glad that they brought the room back though and I like how you see the same people in front of a live audience on the Sunday night. Anyway, the main deciding factor for me if I continue watching is how talented the contestants are and if there is anyone that I warm too. The last 2 years talent has been lacking imo and it was just frustrating that rubbish acts like Christopher Maloney came third. ;lll

Bringing back Sharon and going back to the rooms are the two best things they could have done( although seeing Simon back would be good too) . The chain of stupid, ignorant and selfish judges joining the show has finally ended. At least Sharon brings some wit and class back to the show while still being a very funny person.
I haven't watched the X-Factor weekly since 2010, and wasn't going to watch it again this year until I heard about the changes. I might give it a chance this year.
is the show still capable of producing artists such as One Direction.
How people classify one direction as artists I will never understand. Their actual music is pretty awful and clichéd. The dreaming, screaming teen girls that drool over their posters are the only reason they are still around.

Umm no, their music is catchy as hell and simply being good looking isn't gonna give you the success that they have.

A song being catchy doesnt make it good. Advertisement jingles are notoriously catchy, do you got them in your ipod too? Whether you want to accept it or not, any good looking lad could have been swapped in with any of these guys and it wouldn't make a difference. If the X-Factor didnt exist, they wouldn't have gotten the image exposure that a group like that needs to become famous.

They can all sing and their music has topped countries charts around the world, so I will beg to differ. It's just not to your taste :)

I'd say their music is as catchy as hell because half of their music is stolen from other artists :P
Sharon is a welcomed improvement, and the show might start to be a bit repetitive now, but it's still going strong. Replace Louis with Simon and I think we'd have a great judges line-up :)

When I heard she was returning I didn't think much of it, but actually I've watched the episodes so far and she seems good - definitely an improvement over Tulisa as mentioned above. I didn't watch it last year because I got bored of it but I like how it's back to the audition rooms and so far I think this series has improved.
To the above, I'd rather replace Gary with Simon :P.

the small room
the fact that **** people can't get through because of the audience cheering them on
tulisa not being there!:D
I would love Simon to show up and replace Louie, there was no real rivalry between Simon and Louie as the main guy on the show but if both Gary AND Simon were on the show I think that would be great, but it might be a massive disaster and they agree on everything :( Simon was starting to become more friendly towards the end as well and wasn't as rude as we all wanted him to be.

That was the point of having Simon and Louis. They wouldn't agree on things and filled different roles. If you had both Simon and Gary, then you would have two same role judges and it would be a boring duo IMO. I agree that Simon got less rude near the end of his time.

I'm glad they brought back the studio room and i'm chuffed they brought back Mrs. O - she's always been my favourite judge and I have never enjoyed it as much since she left all those years ago.... I think last year was so dull and boring I didn't bother even watching. My ideal judging panel would have Sharon Osbourne, Louis Walsh, Simon Cowell and Mel B.
I read today apparently the ratings have gone up since Osbourne returned.. so looks as though it's worked.

I really don't like her, I find her so rude.
yes definitely she's the queen of judges and adds an extra special touch the programme, it'd be better with simon too though

Urgh, I can't stand Mel B. Saw her on this years America's got Talent and she was just crap... :P

Hmmm, i'm really not sure on sharon shes alright i guess? i think there are other suitable replacements such as Mel B as others have mentioned, i think the fact she was mean to half of the contestants when she was on the show before as a temp made it so entertaining. Afterall, she has been in probably the most popular band ever, so she knows what sells and what doesnt.

What I'm saying is that if Simon was reintroduced, the producers would obviously want him to go against Gary quite a lot. When Simon and Louie did it it was clear that Simon was the dominant character, whilst if GARY and Simon were at it, I reckon it will be a lot more interesting.

That actually makes an interesting point. I think they should of brought Simon back now that i think about it, as you said Simon and Gary would be battling to see who is the "lead" judge. Everyone likes a bit of Drama between the judges, its what X Factor lacks i think!

In fairness, the vast majority of their success is from an incredibly talented marketing and PR team, very little is to do with their singing.

Where did I say their success was down to just their singing?! All I said was that it was not only down to being good looking. I'm not stupid and of course looks is a huge factor. But the fact remains they can sing, and they put on a good performance and anyone saying they shouldn't be classed as artists and their music is awful is down to personal taste.

Going to be honest, I don't like the X Factor due to the media etc. But, a lot of our stars today have gone through the X Factor. I decided to watch a bit of it the other night and I was quite glad I did. Even though Sharon does get on my nerves, I thought she was excellent and funny. The only judge I can't seem to warm to is Gary.

Everyone warms to Gary.. It's Gary Barlow..
Whilst it's only the young stars that have gone through X Factor, and it was only JLS and One Direction that achieved true global fame whilst all the others did for about a week and died out.. When was the last time you heard Leona Lewis or Alexandra Burke?

Just saying what I think, still hear Leona Lewis all the time in places such as New Look.

We've named one of, what, five? Out of the hundreds of artists who have made top 40 :L
A shame about Cher Lloyd having success; nobody should support a chav and stealing rat.

3 of the current top 40 are from talent shows. Meaning 37 aren't. That sounds pretty damning to me.

Yeah, I thought exactly the same as you. Anyways, I was talking bout Sharon which I was pleasantly surprised by her. I wouldn't miss the X Factor having said that...

I agree with marketing on that last point. Shows like the X-Factor tend to only create short term stars. Long term artists like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry come from other sources.

I think she definitely brings a more charismatic feel to the panel and on turn helps them to be fairly laid back about it as well the judges always have a laugh when Sharon's there you just can't let it go unnoticed be the way she reacted on the first night just sinking out of her chair onto the ground because of the person sings the lyrics in a bad tune and wrong manner! I mean if you take Sharon out and put someone like Bruce from strictly you don't get the same atmosphere, tension or audience "participation." Over all I would say Sharon should have been back a long time ago!!
If you're seeing this I'm on mobile act like you care x - James
