View Full Version : When you catch a public bus, what do you say to the bus driver?

Kardan
22-10-2013, 06:09 PM
Do you say the destination, e.g: "Station road please".

Or do you say the price of your ticket? "£1.50 please"

As I grew up, I only ever said the destination, but it seems more and more people seem to say the price for some strange reason (and surely when the bus fares increase, you'd be a bit screwed :P).

People with bus passes, just answer as if you didn't have one :P

"Single to town/ bus station please"

Never say the price as half the time I forget and have them remind me.

Always the destination. Heard a few people say the price and I've been like o.O

Nothing, have headphones in ears and just put oyster card on the reader and walk straight on.

Samantha

It depends.

I used to just say Featherstone, but that would mean I'd have paid to go up into the lane. However, if I say to Lidl, it's 10p cheaper, so I'm going to say that instead. That's really why I don't say the price as well :P.

22-10-2013, 06:41 PM
In both london and Brighton I have a pass I just scan so no interaction needed

but when I first got on a bus in Brighton I was like.... oh **** what do I do

FlyingJesus
22-10-2013, 06:43 PM
Do I look like I take the bus

Futz
22-10-2013, 06:45 PM
usually say however much i'm paying even if it aint right
if I was a bus driver i wouldn't care what you said unless you looked like a dodgy *******
but saying the price helps them easily work out what button to put it through as
I reckon they prefer it like that

but I have a car now so I don't use that peasant service anymore

22-10-2013, 07:36 PM

Samantha.

I say the price because wherever you go on the bus, it's the same price!

Red
22-10-2013, 08:39 PM
Single or return to wherever. I don't think anyone would say the price here and then most times they are like half fare?.... Turned 16 7 years ago but ok lmao

"£1.25 day saver please"

RyRy
22-10-2013, 08:49 PM
Got me bus pass so I don't have to

Though when I didn't have it, I'd say day ticket if I was in Edinburgh, or "Return to Exeter" if I was down south. Return to Exeter? £6.50. Only in Devon.

Destination! Although I've noticed that here where I'm from (Wirral), people always seem to say the destination. However, in Liverpool, they almost always state the price.

My impression is that the price is only something you would say if it was a flat fare - i.e. £1.60 wherever you go. The driver needs to know where you're going really as they report on destinations for future routes/timetabling etc!

always destination, never met anyone who says the price i think it's really odd but yeah looks like it differs in various areas

Well if I'm getting the bus to like another county I'd say like "Waterord single please" or w.e but when using Dublin City Bus I say the price but it's really awkward when the price changes and the driver has a go at you :(

I'll say the destination or "return to" destination. Don't bother with single. Then I will be kind and say thank you if it wasn't absolutely crap.

I once almost said Habbox Forum though which could have been disastrous.

I have one of those cards that you just put money on now, but when we had tickets you would buy from the driver I would say the type, so 'daily zone 2 concession' usually.

That's what people would usually say, sometimes they'd say like 'daily to the city' or something but I never heard anyone just say the price.

Admittedly I literally never use busses anyway, but even when I did I always said hi haha. Still, saying thanks after is more important imo - having said that, I remember some bus drivers that were grumpy *******s haha

As a western guy, saying the price to a driver in India would probably get me about 10 feet haha

Genuinely never knew you could say the price to drivers :L Didn't even know this system existed...

Tbh I never even knew people said either of the destination or the price really so just goes to show how much it varies from place to place, definitely learnt something new after being used to the no-one saying a thing that goes on here on entry/exit of bus

I never get the bus where I live but when I go to university in London and I have to get the bus somewhere I just show the driver my travel card and walk on. Don't say anything to them and then I get off where I like. However, I would imagine I would say the destination rather than the cost of the fare as I generally wouldn't know. :]

In Glasgow I have a bus pass normally which I pay in a shop across the road and I just show it to the pass to the bus driver and walk on and if it's run out then I say the price - e.g £1.90 please.

In Edinburgh and I'm visiting mates then I've been told they say just a single which is £1.50. :)

Oleh

When I used to use the bus It'd be a mixture.

Whilst at School/Sixth Form it'd be "40 please" as it was a 40p bus pass.

Whilst at college for the first year it was "Rotherham day saver please" as it was cheaper than 2 singles.

Whilst at college for the 2nd year I'd just show them my free pass.

But in Canada when you on the bus there's like a machine and you drop your money into it . but you dont have to tell the bus driver to drop you off at a certain place because we have bus routes so like bus stops at certain places with http://wvs.topleftpixel.com/photos/2010/04/king_rainy_toronto-sun_windows_bus-stop_wide_01.jpg those at it .. if u got anymore question feel free to ask :P

We have bus stops in the UK and you can either ring a bell to let the driver know you want to get off at the next stop or get up and speak to him saying so. The reason a lot of people might tell the driver where you are going is because the prices are different depending on the destination.

ahh see it's all one price . but here there's like a machine that will say the next stop and u can push the button or pull the cord and It makes a noise so the driver knows. I'll show what a bus looks like here

oh and i forgot to add that beside the number is some times a letter "A - E " im not sure what the A,B,C,D means but i know the "E" means "Express" so it will only stop at main intersections and not the little stops in between :)

I used to say the destination as the buses I used to use were priced based on destination, now they're based on a "single" which is the same price no matter what stop you're going to. I've a bus pass, so I just touch the point and walk on, then say thanks as I walk off! :)

Why would you talk to them? and I get the tram more than the bus

Charz777
19-12-2013, 06:17 PM
"Single to town please."

Surely if you say the price to a nearer stop than you intend to get off at, you're getting half of the journey for free? :P I thought that's why you had to say the destination so they can charge you based on it. You wouldn't go into Tesco and say "a £1.79 please" to buy a loaf of bread...? :P

Circadia
19-12-2013, 07:56 PM
Before I turned 16 I would say '2.00 metro/day saver' because that shows I wanted a child metro but if I was just going to one place I'd say 'half to destination' but now I have a bus pass so it doesn't matter same with trams

Wengles
22-12-2013, 12:05 AM
Whenever I get on a bus (which is extremely rare they scare me) I always say thank you when I get off. Apparently no one else does this. It's puzzling.
