Simpsons actress Marcia Wallace dies aged 70

The US actress Marcia Wallace, best known as the voice of Bart Simpson's teacher Edna Krabappel, has died at the age of 70.

Her death was announced in a statement from executive producer Al Jean.

Wallace won an Emmy in 1992 for her work on The Simpsons, as a jaded, grumpy fourth-grade teacher, forced to put up with Bart's antics.

Jean said her "irreplaceable character" would be retired from the show.

"I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace," he said on Saturday.

Such a shock, it's amazing how much she has done for the show really and to be 70 and still active is pretty impressive for a voice actress for a character who is middle-aged. It's going to completely mess up the Ned & Edna storyline, seeing as that seemed to have been the biggest change to the show recently.

I've seen a few people say this, but I didn't even think about the actors of the Simpsons dying. As it's just the voice, you don't even think.

I wonder how they will write her off. I was half expecting someone else to take over as while the original voice over for Meg in Family Guy is still alive someone else voices her now. I hope they do something with the character to give her a good send off.

And I still have the same question. By that does it mean she'll just disappear, quickly fade out or die? I mean - it isn't impossible to do a death episode where she doesn't talk at all.

Ah I see. Probably just fade her out of existance. Maybe a letter to Principal Skinner or who ever (haven't watch Simpsons in ages!)

A episode came out recently where they are in the future and Flanders said something like "and since Homer accidently killed my second wife, Edna, I'll just be haunted by her ghost" or something so have fun with that one Simpsons.

She's defo irreplacable. Like someone said above, didn't think any Simpsons character could actually die!
