What is going on with society these days? Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, One Direction?!?! Are you serious? Why is this the taste of music today. I think people should have a go at listening to Ludwig Van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Felix Mendelssohn, Maurice Ravel, Frederic Chopin and Antonio Vivaldi. Seriously! :P

What happened to Randy Houser?
What happened to Bob Marley?
Listen to Cannibal Corpse! I dare you

As a person who was classically trained when younger, I find I've actually come to dislike most classical music now tbh. always hated country and metal too just not my sort of thing at all ;p

In fairness the only person I like out of who you mentioned is lady gaga ( though I absolutely love her). I definitely say my reasoning behind why I fit that sort of though is cause of my favourite sort of music being electropop/synthpop, and none of those areas really being anything like it

I understand and kind of support your cause (although to a much less radical alternative) but there's little that can be done, really.
Pop music is named that way because it is written, recorded and released solely to earn money. Currently the trend is to absorb this kind of music and enjoy it, which is why many artists sound similar, often using the same sets of chords and tempo: it earns more. Artists producing the genres you suggested are typically more interested in releasing their art with a message and personal meaning, which leads to greater variation. As a result, supporters of pop music are usually less interested in their favourite pop artists' music than supporters of metal, country or classical and their kind of music.
Hopefully music can be a bit more diverse in the next few years and pop can be a little less all-encompassing

I'm currently on my iPhone if you are seeing this message. Pretend like you care xx

Uh ? //?????? What's the link between society and those artists???? If people wanna listen to Miley Cyrus or Lady Gaga they will lol why do you have a problem... Don't think your music taste is better than everyone else's or you're superior to them because you're a Bob Marley fan and they're fans of 1d. Music taste is personal so stop bashing people for that abd carry on listening to Beethoven on your grampaphone wearing a fur coat and a cigar in hand

Personally, I think that people will listen to what they want or what they are bought up with. Personally I dislike metal, classical and country because I wasn't bought up listening to it.
I'm not saying I love the artists you mentioned (lady gaga, one direction etc) but everyone has different taste.
Metal and classical are still popular amongst people it just isn't played on the radio as much.

You're just naming popular artists and blaming society for liking them

The music you want to hear is out there but you just have to look hard enough, you think they dont exist because they're not popular but they do

most of them stop making music though due to not being able to make a living off of it or any acknowledgement

bob marleys dead btw

I guess classical/baroque/etc music has fallen out of favour to the increasing ability to actually associate oneself with the lyrics in popular music. If you don't know much about the artists themselves then melody and rhythm alone can't always provide the same feelings as a song that tells a story with actual words can. DUM DUM DA DEE DUH DUH DUH DUH DUH DUH DUH isn't going to evoke the same emotion as a love story that most if not everybody can relate to is. The same applies to death metalbands like Cannibal Corpse whose songs are almost all about subjects that people either don't associate with or don't wish to admit they associate themselves with such as suicide, mental illness, sexual urges, etc.

I feel that my own music taste is eclectic enough that I have a good mixture of light and shade. My current emotional state generally dictates the type of music I'll listen to but if current popular music is playing and it has a good beat and a catchy tun then I'm sure as hell going to sing along. There is really no room today for this type of music snobbery because you'll often find that under the surface of bopping around to a bit of 1d there are lots of folk that will be chilling to Fur Elise after a long day of work!

Essentially catchy beats and lyrics that people relate with is why popular music is so named. I think the fact that you've named some of the most well-known composers of their respective periods sort of speaks volumes.

there still are other genres of music you know? you've literally just used pop artists to sum up ALL music of today.. which is wrong

there are reasons why the genres you mentioned aren't as popular nowadays but that doesn't mean they don't exist at all

I always thought pop music was called pop because its POPular... not because of the real genre...

And Lady Gaga is amazing, have you heard her new album? It's pretty unique if you ask me, and she has some meanings to her songs.

I was going to write a whole huge thing about the progression of music and what fans of certain genres have come to expect but then I saw that you recommended Cannibal Corpse as a great musical achievement in the same light as Tchaikovsky and realised you'll probably never know what you're actually talking about

er why does it matter what other people listen to
it matters what u like and that u listen to what u like. it matters that you enjoy it too.
if people enjoy jb etc then who cares. you're not being forced into it.
i agree other artists deserve recognition but i don't think you're gonna change the views of many. just make sure you're happy lol.

You seem angry. I'm just trying to get people into trying different genres of music rather than hit music / pop music. I used to never listen to Classical because I didn't really know what was out there. Some stuff is boring but then there are some other really emotional, moving, inspirational stuff, you got to explore. It's not everyone's thing but to give it a try might be something you wish you had done earlier, haha.

some simple recommendations would have been better than slating a whole genre

That made me laugh. Putting Cannibal Corpse and Tchaikovsky as great musical achievements is hilarious. Where did I say that?

Cannibal Corpse is pretty much the other side of the spectrum when it comes to hit music meanwhile Tchiakovsky and Beethoven would probably be on a different island all together, haha.

Don't take this post so negatively. I don't mean any harm to anyone's taste in music, just that I have a wish for everyone to try other genres.

I am familiar with some of the composers but I don't know how to exactly spell most of their names. By the way, you telling me that I assume that I do not know classical composers was a little unnecessary of you and rude don't you think? Please be nice on this forum. :)

I wasn't being rude at all. If you were such fans of these composers then you should learn their names.
