Aol has announced it will be shutting down the popular music player Winamp by the end of the month. Nullsoft, the company behind Winamp, was bought out by AOL in 1999.

Many fans of Winamp are petitioning to have the program released as a free open source project and rumours have surfaced that Microsoft is interested in buying both Winamp and even SHOUTcast.

Does anyone on here use Winamp? It's been my perfered media player for many years. I know loads use iTunes but I've never been able to stand it - Winamp has always seemed a lot quicker and easier to use while as iTunes for me has always frozen a lot more and been a bigger size in general.

I'm also unsure what would happen if Microsoft bought Winamp, considering they already have their Windows Media Player. I can't see them running both so they would probably end up using the technology in Winamp and adding it to Windows Media Player which would annoy a lot of non WMP fans.

What do you think?

I haven't used Winamp for ages, probably had Windows XP when I did. I remember the shoutcast plugin you had to download to be able to DJ on Habbo Radio's haha.
