View Full Version : Celebrity News (Sub)Forum
Hey there!
I have been thinking about this for a while and I spoke to Chris about it today and he said we should see what people think so y'know..tell me what you think. My suggestion was to add a "Celebrity News" sub-forum to the Current Affairs forum in the General section. I think this would be a good idea for the following reasons:
If you look at the first page in Current Affairs, you will see four threads about celebrities (two for Tom Daley, one for Ian Watkins and one for Paul Walker) as of now, those four threads are the most popular threads in Current Affairs so we know the the Celebrity News sparks discussion.
Whenever there's celebrity news posted in Current Affairs, it's often met with replies such as "This isn't even news" and sometimes even gets moved to Spam. So having a place for it mgiht fix that problem and eliminate the pessimistic replies.
While writing this, I realise people may post saying that there's no need for it because there's not that much celebrity news posted. While this is true, I think if there is a place espeically for it, people will be more inclined to post it as their thread won't get shot down by people saying it's not news. If it's gets posted in, I believe it'd be a very busy part of the forum with a lot of discussion.
Anyway, I know how Habbox loves polls and Matt told me not to post one so for that reason, feel free to post in the poll above! Personally I think one should be added but who am I to speak for everyone?
Thoughts?
there was one and it was merged with current affairs cause it was dead
or current affairs was
no need, keep it as it is

I thoguht that and when I said it to Matt he said if there was it must have been a while ago. I was sure there was :P
yeah lets have one, i reckon it'd increase the amount of celebrity threads if there was a sub-forum
and maybe it will keep the politic nerds happy because the 'rubbish' news or whatever isn't in the way of their crap

Don't think it is needed. Doesn't seem popular enough as it is now.
Inseriousity.

Seems to me a more appropriate action to take would be against the 'this isnt news' brigade, highlight their posts, move them to spam then warn them. I don't really think a celebrity gossip forum is needed. As graham said, there was one and it wasn't used. That and the main forum would just be filled with threads about politics and it's good to have more of a choice.
People saying Tom Daley's bf isn't news has probably generated more discussion than it's stopped as the posts I saw weren't really aimed at the OP but the newspapers and they were merely raising interesting questions about the invasiveness of the media.

When people wanted a food and drink subforum for this same reason, they were told no because people can already talk about food and drink within the current forums and only if there was constantly more threads to the point where it could actively fill a subforum, a subforum would be added. In my opinion, I think the same applies here really - it doesn't seem to be too much of an issue at the moment :P.

Tbh I don't think that's a good idea.. is that not essentially warning people for posting in the wrong forum, which in many cases will be a genuine mistake by the OP? And could that not discourage users from posting their own threads :P? Misunderstood that at first! Ok, I agree with your point and I was going to say the same thing :P. I think that people posting 'How is this news?' or similar is basically pointless posting and can be dealt with under the current rules so if you see someone doing that then I recommend you report their post(s).
maybe we should do some different and stop sticking to what we're used to
BREAK THE BOUNDRIES!
i don't think 'it's fine how it is' is a good enough excuse to stop this idea sorry x

I suggested this a while back and was pretty much slammed for it.
Obviously, there should be a forum for this kind of news. But hey.

I'm not so sure about it, but there isn't any harm in trying it if thats what a majority wants. We can just as easily remove a subforum if it doesn't work.

I've tried suggesting subforums for a fair few things in the past (Pointless threads, RuneScape etc) and I always got the response that HxF wants to avoid sub-forums because they are hidden away in other forums and don't get people posting in them blah blah blah.
HxF loves thread prefixes though, I'm sure adding more of them will make everyone happier(!)

I knew it was suggested pretty recently and do wonder why nothing came of it

Maybe the fact people don't post in subforums is down to the content/topic, not the fact no-one knows they are there :L Or, just have a whole new "Celebrity Gossip" forum in discuss anything. It seems to be popular enough..

Chris said back in June: "We're not having a subforum." and I thought the general forum consensus were that subforums were evil...
Plus, I'm sure the RuneScape players got told "You won't be given a subforum just because there's an increase in activity"
I don't think there's much need, it's pretty easy to differentiate between celebrity gossip and Romanians and Bulgarians coming to take over the country.

hahahahahahahaha, this literally laughed out loud :L
sounds pointless as the current affairs isnt overly active anyway
subforums r gay
celebrity news fits into current affairs whether the squares like it or not and is no less worthy

Excuse me? This is my thread!! ;)
Personally, I understand where people are coming from not liking sub-forums but I wouldn't say it'd need a whole new forum
waste of time

I think (and I am NOT saying it has to be one way or another..) it depends entirely on your reading preferences.
As someone who reads the Daily Telegraph politics is an expected topic, and taking the description from the Current Affairs forum; "Discuss the latest world affairs, news, and politics", one would interpret that as "real" news - ie. world affairs. On the other hand, someone that would be more likely to pick up the Daily Star or the Sun is much more likely to consider the latest goings on in "I'm a Celebrity" and Tom Daley's love life as "news". Don't get me wrong, the Sun is excellent light reading if you don't want to use your brain too much (no insult intended to anyone - as someone who has read, and will voluntarily read the paper if there is one going).
TLDR; tabloid vs broadsheet news.

Not sure if these were aimed towards me as the OP or not but whether there is a sub forum created or not, I will be reading all the threads.
My reasons for posting is because people clearly enjoy these kinds of threads, they are the most popular. Sometimes when these types of threads are posted the are met with replies such as "This isn't even news" which make people less inclined to post such threads. If there is a section specifically for this kind if thread, people may be more inclined to post this increasing activity in this particular area of the forum

ofc we all click wat we like to read!
there is room for both types of threads to co-exist without having to push either into a subforum

In fairness, this is an excellent point; the Metro is a perfect example of how the two can co-exist together..

No it was just a general comment, i don't see how a subforum for these types of threads would make people stop posting "this isn't news"??? clearly they already have a predefined notion of what they consider news and no amount of subforums in the world will change their opinion on this... as the snob marketing stated he doesn't consider the sun or the star news, rather "light reading" lol....how is a subforum going to stop someone coming along and posting "this isnt news" ??
i don't see how it would also encourage people to post in these threads more... they are currently one of the most popular types of threads on the forum..
seems like a pointless suggestion for some brownie points rather than an actual benefit to anyone! soz but that what it seems like to me.
- - - Updated - - -
PERSONALLY, if something is more popular than something else, should that not be given preference.... it seems only fair to me. (ie, since it is agreed by everyone that the celeb news threads are clearly more popular, should that not get its own forum (currently current affairs) and make current affairs the subforum, since its less popular?
thats what happens with other forums when one thing is less popular..surely the same should apply here..
dont see why boring news in which about 3 people post in should get preference over threads that gather opinions from everyone..
Chris; opinions???

Keep them in the Current affairs forum, current affairs doesn't just have to be about war, politics and economics.
I think maybe what's putting people off posting celebrity news in that forum is, as mentioned, that people feel they'll just get responses of 'this isnt news' or whatever. People should just ignore those comments. I read a few topics a day in the Daily Mail celebrity column, just I cba posting it on here as I haven't really got much to say and i'm more interested in the pictures :P: but who knows, maybe if more was posted in current affairs then we'd have more comments.

There's no point. No one is that mentally inept to have to have celeb and real news separated, so they know what is of interest to them. One of the main, practical uses for thread titles is to put words which will be of relevance to the user and seeing as you have a forum rule precisely for this reason you would be contradicting yourselves for creating a pointless sub-forum - seeing as it wasn't that long ago one of the main missions of this forum was to remove sub-forums as they were untidy, impractical and a waste of space and time.

Just warn people that only post 'This isn't news' as pointless posting as it doesn't contribute.
If someone posts something like 'Not sure if this is news worthy, why does the media feel the need to report on Tom Daley's favourite colour?' then it should be left, because it's talking about the state of media today compared to OP posting silly threads. This sort of thing happens all the time in the politics threads anyways.

If a celebrity gossip section was made, I'd only move the Bieber, Cher Lloyd and the 20 year older boyfriend of Tom Daley into gossip, all the others can be in current affairs.
