View Full Version : People of the UK - What do you consider your national identity to be?

Kardan

On a form, if you had to pick one of the following options, what would you pick?

British
English
Welsh
Scottish
Northern Irish
Irish
Other (Only select this if you actually live in the UK but feel none of the above apply to you)

--

Personally, I'd be happy being called English or British, but if asked, I would describe myself as British.

Gah, ran out of edit time. I should note that people from Ireland should NOT vote for Irish, since they are not part of the UK.

to be honest i agree with subo when you think 'foreign' you think of Spanish or French etc id never think of people from the UK as foreign even though technically they are

just like she thinks of the Irish as 'one of them' id think of English as 'one of us'
technically were a different nationality but culture wise were exactly the same

Phil

no

Yeah, we have 4 main channels and they are RTÉ 1, RTÉ 2, TV3 and TG Ceathair. The rest like BBC, ITV are bought on packages like Sky and UPC.
Besides based on that theory I'm anything between Irish/English/American/African and God knows what else :P

People from other parts of the UK to you aren't foreign - whether your a foreigner or not to somebody depends whether you reside in the same sovereign state as them. The United Kingdom is a sovereign state whereas England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are not.

To answer the question (and funnily enough just had a discussion in uni about this) British. :P

If I could only pick one then I would class myself as British.

Oh sorry! :P It's nice that you think of us as the same though, i've long thought it a great shame the way history played out (with stupid and wrongful mistakes on our part) which led to you lot in southern Ireland leaving the UK.

I say English as there's quite a few British people here so I like to make it seem like I'm slightly different but if someone asks if I'm British I don't specifically say yes I'm English. Depends on context really
