Raced how many years with no serious injuries. Goes skiing and suffers serious head injuries on a rock.

Just shows how safe F1 is at the moment!
Hope he gets well soon!

He did break a leg back in 1999 in F1, but the point still stands in how safe the sport is... :P

When I heard the story initially I was very worried, seeing as there have ben a number of high profile deaths from skiing in the past few years, luckily though, it seems it's not as bad as initially reported. Hopefully he has a speedy recovery :)

A leg break is definitely not serious though. You could break a leg by falling of a curb!
There are a few news sites reporting its serious and other reporting it's only minor but it definitely doesn't sound as bad now as what was being reported!

Former F1 World Champion Michael Schumacher is in a 'critical' condition following a skiing accident on Sunday morning.

Schumacher was flown by helicopter after the accident to Grenoble Hospital.

Although initial reports stated that Schumacher's injuries were not serious, the hospital reported at 10pm on Sunday night that the former Ferrari and Mercedes driver's condition had worsened and was now regarded as 'critical'.

The accident happened while the 44-year-old was skiing in the French resort of Meribel in the popular Three Valleys area.

It is understood he was wearing a helmet when he hit his head on a rock.

Schumacher's spokeswoman confirmed: "Michael fell on his head when he was on a private skiing trip in the French Alps.

"He was taken to hospital and is receiving professional medical attention. We ask for understanding that we cannot give out continuous information about his health.

"He was wearing a helmet and was not alone. No one else was involved in the fall."

It doesn't look like a safe time for celebrities to be doing anything extreme at the moment (skiing isn't even extreme, haha).

Hopefully he pulls through, and lucky for him he was wearing his helmet.

I will be utterly speechless if he passes away, I read the news this morning and it looked like it was just a bang on the head and he was fine... But this is just unreal now...

sadly things can seem fine just after it's happened, but can deteriorate at any time.

It would be a sad loss, great driver and not a bad man at all.

Just heard that he is in a critical condition, going on from what Matt said. I don't really follow F1 much, but Schumacher is a household name for many growing up whilst he's been in this career. I hope he recovers as best he can, and I think it would really be a shock if he does pass away.

I can't believe that. No injuries whilst competing in F1 and then gets put into a coma because of a rock. I hope he pulls through soon!

Some of the latest from this morning:

A spokesman for the hospital said: "Michael Schumacher was the victim of very serious trauma. He was very agitated when he arrived and we decided he was in a critical situation and he quickly went into a coma.

"The neurosurgical treatment he received brought us quite a lot of information. We had to operate urgently to release some pressure in his head. Unfortunately, he has some lesions within his brain."

Professor Jean-Francois Payen added: "I'd say this accident happened in the right place because he was taken into hospital immediately and operated on as soon as he arrived, this meant his state is critical and he is still in a coma and he will be kept in a coma.

"Everything that needed to be done has been done at the moment we can't really say when he will recover, we cannot answer this yet."

Professor Payen continued: "We can say he is fighting for his life. We judge him to be in a very serious situation. We cannot tell what the outcome will be yet. We are working hour-by-hour but it's too early to say what is going to happen and to have a prognosis.

"We think his helmet did help, without a helmet he wouldn't be here now."

Schumacher's condition improvesFormer motor racing champion Michael Schumacher's condition has improved slightly after an operation to relieve pressure on his brain, his doctors have said.
A new scan taken overnight showed signs that he was "better than yesterday", but he was still "not out of danger", doctors said.
The seven-time Formula 1 champion suffered head injuries on Sunday in a skiing accident in the French Alps.
He was put in a medically-induced coma.
An initial scan on Monday night showed "an improved situation" and indicated a window of opportunity for a second operation, doctors said.
The family took the "difficult decision" to give consent for the procedure, and doctors operated on Schumacher for about two hours.

A subsequent scan revealed a "slight improvement".
"We can't say he is out of danger but... we have gained a bit of time,'' said Dr Jean-Francois Payen. "The coming hours are crucial.
"All the family is very much aware that his state is still sensitive and anything can happen."
Doctors said it was impossible to give a prognosis for his condition for tomorrow, six months' or even a year's time.

Odd, although it is from the sun.. This was posted on f1 website yesterday:

Michael Schumacher’s management has released the first update in just over three weeks on the seven-time world champion. His condition remains unchanged as doctors continue the process of bringing him out of his medically-induced coma following his skiing accident in December.

“Michael is still in the wake up phase,” read Friday’s statement. “The situation has not changed. Any medical information published which is not confirmed by the team of doctors treating Michael or his management has to be considered as not valid.”
