On Monday morning it was colder at Chicago airport, a record-breaking 26 degrees below zero - or 42 below with wind chill - than it was at the South Pole, where it was minus 23. The National Weather Service warned that “potentially life-threatening wind chills will continue through [until] Tuesday morning".

Despite a fleet of snow ploughs working on the runways, the airport had cancelled 1600 flights before midday. Most schools were closed and many workers were allowed to work from home. Even the city’s prison system was forced to accommodate the terrible cold, allowing inmates due for release to stay on overnight if they chose.

Around Chicago six "warming centres" were established for homeless people, and the city’s largest homeless shelter, Pacific Garden Mission, prepared to break its record of overnight visitors, 1016, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

I can't believe some people actually deny that global warming is happening. Our own prime minister even said that global warming was "absolute crap" in 2009, which astounds me.

I hope all US Habboxers are safe and warm!

Well this is very clearly man-made global warming because we've never had extreme weather events before. I call upon all our politicians the world over to impose a worldwide carbon tax on we serfs before we destroy ourselves with our cheap flights to Spain. I also call on David Cameron, Al Gore, Barry Obama and other world leaders/leading scientists to fly to the Hague in private chartered jets and lecture us on how we shouldn't fly because we're killing the polar bears. With the unhypocriticial messages given by Gore, Prince Charles and other world figures - we are sure to get the message right out there to the citizens of our Brave New World.

What else? Ahhhhh yeah, the BBC will cover all of my proposals (of that there is no doubt) but I also think it should almost certainly have wall-to-wall coverage of that appalling Australian PM Tony Abbott and should invite journalists from the Guardian, the Observer, the 'Independent' (all tolerant and non-biased papers, not like those nasty right wing papers that the great unwashed outside of Islington, Twickenham and Camden read) to bash him live on air and call him a climate denier. See, this will expose him as being on the same level as the Nazis and will expose him for what he really is - a nasty right winger that's backed by Murdoch. Because the National Socialists really were right wing afterall.

With this proposed climate tax, it's sure that hurricanes and extreme weather events will stop and we'll be able to build a new, green and equal world that's powered by windmills. Workers of the world, unite!

Global Warming devastates America

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/files/2014/01/us-weather-snow-ca_2782142b-460x288.jpg
Soon children will have forgotten what snow looks like...

See that white stuff floating down past the orange trees and landing on your alligators and manatees, Florida? That's global warming, that is.

See that frozen white thing by the harbor that used to look a green woman with a spiky headdress, New York? That's global warming, that is.

See that chilling solid yellow stream extending upwards from the snowy ground to your shrivelling blackened member after you made the very wrong call to take an al fresco leak, Chicagoans? That's global warming, that is.

How do we know this? Because Bryan Walsh of Time magazine says so:

But not only does the cold spell not disprove climate change, it may well be that global warming could be making the occasional bout of extreme cold weather in the U.S. even more likely. Right now much of the U.S. is in the grip of a polar vortex, which is pretty much what it sounds like: a whirlwind of extremely cold, extremely dense air that forms near the poles. Usually the fast winds in the vortex—which can top 100 mph (161 k/h)—keep that cold air locked up in the Arctic. But when the winds weaken, the vortex can begin to wobble like a drunk on his fourth martini, and the Arctic air can escape and spill southward, bringing Arctic weather with it. In this case, nearly the entire polar vortex has tumbled southward, leading to record-breaking cold….

And, of course, so does the Guardian say so….

While the ongoing cold snap is breaking records from Minnesota to Florida, it will not go down in history as the most significant Arctic outbreak in U.S. history, not even by a longshot. Scientists said the deep freeze gripping the U.S. does not indicate a halt or reversal in global warming trends, either. In fact, it may be a counterintuitive example of global warming in action.

Everything's global warming, America. Didn't you get the message yet from your President and John Kerry and Al Gore and James Hansen and the gang? Everything! That's why, if ever any of you want to see a day of sunshine again in your miserable, too-selfish-to-change-your-lifestyle carbon-addicted lives, here are a few things you absolutely are going to have to do: permanently reject the Keystone XL pipeline; beg your president for more green taxes and regulations; plead for more of your money to be diverted to successful clean energy businesses like Solyndra and Fisker electric cars; insist that more bald eagle nesting trees be chopped down in order to clear a space for wind farms; demand that the Heartland Institute and the Competitive Enterprise Institute be defunded and that Marc Morano, Anthony Watts and Pat Michaels be executed. Oh, and definitely torch the premises of evil, right-wing conspirator-publisher Regnery for producing filth like this terrible book which suggests the caring, nurturing environmental movement has dangerously fascistic tendencies….

Alternatively, if you want to go on deluding yourself that the current cold snap in the US is what's known as "winter" and has nothing whatsoever to do with man-made climate change then you might draw some comfort from these words from Princeton physicist Prof William Happer.

Polar vortices have been around forever. They have almost nothing to do with more CO2 in the atmosphere.

Not just that – but without polar vortices, America might look a very different country today, possibly with many times more CCTV cameras, much poorer dental care, and with cricket as its national summer sport instead of baseball.

About this time of year in 1777, just before the Battle of Princeton, there was a similar sequence. On January 2, Cornwallis’s men marched south from New York City through cold rain and muddy roads to try to trap George Washington and his little Continental Army in Trenton . On the night of January 2-3, a polar vortex swept across New Jersey, with snow and a very hard freeze. Aided by the extremely cold weather, Washington was able to evacuate his troops and artillery over newly frozen roads and to avoid Cornwallis’s encirclement. Reaching Princeton on the viciously cold morning of January 3, Washington won another battle against the British and escaped to winter quarters in Morristown. Thank you polar vortex!

And here's what meteorologist Dr Ryan Maue says on Twitter:

This #polarvortex episode is the global warming media's most recent "Snapchat" message: after a few seconds, explanation just dissolves

And here's the uncompromising verdict of meteorologist Dr Roy Spencer (h/t The Hockey Schtick)

Does Global Warming Theory Predict Record Cold?

You do realise that global warming refers to an increase of average global temperatures over time, right? And that places are allowed to be cold?

You simply can't go 'LOL ITS SNOWING SO GLOBAL WARMING DOESNT EXIST' - That's a really childish way of looking at it.

We're simply doing what the global warmists (now called climate change advocates) did a few years ago when we had heatwaves which was claim that the heatwaves were due to global warming. Remember? 50 days to save the world and all of that garbage we were fed. That's why they've changed the phrase see - because with climate change, no matter what the weather they win. Very clever tactic.

A simple reason for that, global warming is happening. The globe is warming up gradually over time. So the name stands. Global warming doesn't include the changes to climate that we're experiencing more often. Deadlier hurricanes, more floods etc. Just because they changed the name, it doesn't give any less credibility to global warming.

So in other words, whenever there is a stronger hurricane/warmer summer etc it's down to global warming but whenever there's the opposite then that too is down to global warming. Essentially it's saying that weather = caused by man.

I love how whenever sceptics link the cold weather to proving/disproving man-made climate change we are shot down, yet you lot are allowed free reign to claim that whatever weather event is happening is down to global warming ... even if you don't provide any evidence for it what-so-ever just as Andrew Neil and others have pointed out in regards to this vortex over the US right now.

Pro-AGW scientists claim the ice is shrinking yet when it's expanding and they get stuck and I point this out, i'm wrong. But when you all say that this cold weather over the US is due to climate change - with no proof what so ever - it's accepted as fact without question. Amazing but unbelievable really.

POLAR VORTEX CAUSES HUNDREDS OF INJURIES AS PEOPLE MAKING SNIDE REMARKS ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE ARE PUNCHED IN FACE

MINNEAPOLIS (The Borowitz Report (http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/borowitzreport/))—The so-called polar vortex caused hundreds of injuries across the Midwest today, as people who said “so much for global warming” and similar comments were punched in the face.
Authorities in several states said that residents who had made ignorant comments erroneously citing the brutally cold temperatures as proof that climate change did not exist were reporting a sharp increase in injuries to the face and head regions.
In an emergency room in St. Paul, Harland Dorrinson, forty-one, was waiting to be treated for bruising to the facial area after he made a crack about how the below-freezing temperatures meant that climate-change activists were full of ****.
“I’d just finished saying it and boom, out of nowhere someone punched me in the face,” he said. “This polar vortex is really dangerous.”
The meteorology professor Davis Logsdon, of the University of Minnesota, issued a safety warning to residents of the states hammered by the historic low temperatures: “If you are living within the range of the polar vortex and you have something idiotic to say about climate change, do not leave your house.”

^___^ avoid any unnecessary injuries dear hxf people

James Delingpole is a moron.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wmuhKzYp4s

Nurse told me that he simply presented Delingpole with a hypothetical question: if a dear relative was suffering from a fatal disease, would he opt for the “consensus” treatment recommended by doctors, or advice to drink more orange juice offered by a fringe maverick quack? In terms of the science of climate change, that fringe maverick is analogous, of course, to Delingpole’s own position.

Delingpole apparently found the line of questioning too much to handle and was purportedly lost for words. He at one point, according to Nurse, asked for the film crew to stop filming.

We're simply doing what the global warmists (now called climate change advocates) did a few years ago when we had heatwaves which was claim that the heatwaves were due to global warming.

Except that increased heatwaves were just used as indicators to show the overall changes, and that volatile weather conditions of all sorts were stated to be a part of this right from the start - which makes complete sense to anyone who knows how weather works because it's all a system of pressures and fluctuations, so heat waves quite clearly directly affect cooler temperatures to come. It's really very basic science

Essentially it's saying that weather = caused by man.

I'm pretty sure it isn't even debatable that our actions influence global climates, the actual argument is just over how much we're doing to it

Firstly - the loss of ice is in the ARCTIC. The people that had to be rescued from the 'expanding' ice was in ANTARCTICA. Two different places. Most of the reports on global warming talk about the melting ice of the arctic, not antartica.

Secondly, many people are talking about how the current weather in the US is linked to global warming:

http://www.climatecentral.org/news/polar-vortex-in-u.s.-may-be-valid-example-of-global-warming-16927

Also, if you look at rise in global temperature diagrams, the North Pole is heating up way, way more rapidly than the South Pole, hence why the Arctic ice is melting fast, and it's North America having issues at the moment.

A quick google search would show that Canada is also warming up, and infact, is warming up much faster than the rest of the world (since it's so far North).

I remember when the UEA were caught falsifying evidence on it. Hence why I just ignore discussions on global warming as it seems a grey area. provided we make energy usage more economical and environmentally friendly I couldn't care about irreversible changes to the environment. It's clearly too late now to change anything if it is man-made, and saying we must protect our future generations is ridiculous because it's generally considered normal practice to improve technologies anyway, and that's what the world has been doing for decades.
