Mark Duggan killing lawful, says jury

Mark Duggan, whose death sparked riots in England in 2011, was lawfully killed, an inquest jury has said by a majority of 8 to 2.

The 29-year-old was shot dead by armed officers in August 2011 in Tottenham, north London.

Rioting spread across London and other parts of England in what became some of the worst disturbances in decades.

Jurors at the Royal Courts of Justice also concluded Mr Duggan did not have a gun when he was shot by officers

They also said it was more likely than not that Mr Duggan had thrown a gun from a taxi just before he was killed.

Following the verdict his mother Pamela Duggan was led out of the court in tears, while his brother was seen screaming and shouting.

One man shouted: "A black life ain't worth nothing."

The coroner thanked the jury and told them they will be excused from future jury service for life if they want..

It's strange how much of a deal was made about it yesterday. Everyone knows the police rarely get in trouble. This is especially true with cases like this when they clearly had a reason with Mark Duggan. Riots aside, it was a straightforward case - Duggan was being followed by the Metropolitan Police for being a well-known gangster who was handling a weapon, he was stopped by the police and the police mistook him for holding the weapon in his hand - even the witness kept faltering with his statement and as the police are just humans they too can make errors. The jury even agreed that he wasn't holding the weapon, but there was one near the scene.

What his family are forgetting is that he was clearly dangerous - he was handling a firearm and was a known gangster. He was evil. Obviously they can rant and rave, but their attitude and the attitude of the crowd in front of the High Court was appalling - shouting over the top of the officer giving a statement, shouting Duggan was executed and that the police are scum. It just backs up your statement that the riots were under social unrest and an anti-police mentality.

Maybe if that area wasn't anti-everything the police wouldn't have to search youths at random on the streets. That seems to be their argument. The police didn't randomly decide "let's go check this area and search people at random" - there are statistics for Tottenham that suggest it is a dangerous area and that crime levels need to drop - hence the police will come in and see what they can do. It's baffling that people in that area are so hell-bent on anti-social behaviour, that they even start a riot destroying innocent peoples' property. It's no wonder no-one can take them seriously.

Such a dangerous slogan for them to live by. It means no peace for everyone, as they won't rest and will draw others into it - even people who do not give a damn and are probably happy to see a thug taken off the street. Granted, it's one out of thousands but it's a start.

couldn't of said it better myself. You only buy a gun and carry around a gun if you plan on using it, the police did what was correct and were protecting the public.
