know one knows for sure but it could be next year
Usually it has to skip a version to be good -> XP (good), Vista (bad), Windows 7 (good), Windows 8 (bad), Windows 9 (good?!) :P

I've heard talks about windows 9 but also talks about 8.2 so who knows. The one thing I can't see happening and people should accept is the start button returning. There's always articles about it but the reason it hasn't returned is Microsoft want's people using the metro start interface. Now I'm not the biggest metro (or whatever it's now called) fan but I think it works as a start menu great - hit start, type and get what you want from apps, settings and more. It basically is the windows 7 start menu search but advanced.
For the next version of Windows I'd love to see a better way to rearrange tiles on the metro interface as you can swap between right and left but if you try and swap up and down it just moves the tile above to the right instead of swapping places with the bottom one.

Agree, it's as if the windows 8 was a trial version for the windows 9 OS.

Obvious that Microsoft have started working on their next major release of Windows. It's been like for many many years :P
You will see the 8.2 update first.

Windows 8 came out in 2012. But like any company who makes software they would have started planning for next release.

Why? Arn't they meant to make everyone like the current version so everyone hates the next version?

Well like your Apple products they also update their software. It's about bringing new features, capability, bug fixes and also to make money.
They will probably learn over their mistakes with 8 as they did a lot of management/staff changes.
It's not like it's being released after a year.

I'm just trying to explain why companies do this so they have a better understanding. Apple would have already started work on their next version of iOS and OSX. Once they have finished with one product or software release they will get part of their team to start working on the "Next major release" while also still supporting and fixing their current release.
So really there should be no surprise that Windows 9 will be released in 2015 or after.

I know what you mean and I understand why they do it... it seems to be working for them since they're worth billions and I find it hard to find £5! I just don't like windows now... it has changed like loads... like all the stuff I've seen doesn't remind me of any older versions but meh!! MONEY FOR THE WIN!

8.1 is now out which bought back the start button, NOT menu.
8.2 is due out in a few months.
9 will probably be next year, Microsoft have already confirmed they're changing to a yearly release cycle.
The start menu won't be coming back.
Get used to Windows 8, it's actually a lot better than 7 was so quit yapping.

I'm still using Windows 7. I dislike 8 and will probably end up moving to a Mac in future before installing 8 or 9.

I heard that Apple are working on a new iPhone and iPad as well :o
Anyways, I don't think Windows 8 is that bad, so I'm happy to stick with it for a while.

Windows 8 is decent apart from the odd bug here and there. I fear Windows 9 will just push the ideas of apps more which I dread, especially for Skype (absolutely dreadful).

They will keep the desktop version of Skype for a while now. I don't think that will go any time soon due to the amount of users it has and that the fact they all don't have Windows 8 or Windows 9 when it comes to it.

It will, but in a metro format something like http://jay-machalani.squarespace.com/blog/2013/12/12/fixing-windows-8
Probably release touch and desktop versions or the option to switch between the two

That looks really nice, if they can put that into Windows 9 or even a Windows 8 update it would sell me to switch. It looks fresh and modern, and builds off the Windows 7 taskbar.
It's a shame they do not just sell Windows 8 and have the option when installing to install a touchscreen UI or a desktop UI, and allow you swap if need be in the control panel. In fact, they could just revamp the accessibility options and allow for a touchscreen based interface or maybe an autodetect feature when first installing.
It seemed a bit rushed when it came out in hindsight :/
