Haribo stops selling 'racist' sweets

http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02794/Haribo_2794781b.jpg

The offending sweets are in the shape of ethnic masks or facial representations that resemble primitive African, Asian or Native American art

German sweet maker Haribo has stopped selling some of its liquorice sweets in Sweden and Denmark because certain consumers considered them racist.
The sweets, part of the Skipper Mix salty blend that has been on the market for years, will no longer feature the controversial figures in both Scandinavian countries.

Haribo said it had taken into account the critical comments made on the internet in recent weeks.

"We decided that we could keep the product while removing the parts that certain consumers found offensive," Haribo Sweden head Ola Dagliden told AFP.
The offending sweets are in the shape of ethnic masks or facial representations that resemble primitive African, Asian or Native American art.

They depicted what "a sailor who travelled the world" in days would have brought home in days gone by, Mr Dagliden said.
"It wasn't something we saw as having negative connotations."

Not racist at all unless they're marketed /wrapped in something that would change that.

If anything I would say some kind of copyright infringment, as it is the masks of their culture

So it is these things which are the culprits? Not the gummy bears as hinted? That's good I guess. I can go back to making my Haribo Gummy Bears play out all the positions in the Karma Sutra.

...exploiting someone's cultural identity and traditions for profit is very disrespectful. it's not that hard to understand really

I really don't understand how that's exploiting their traditions? It's not as if people from those cultures are being deprived of something they would have otherwise had.

the masks are considered sacred and are a significant part of native american culture and they're being stolen and exploited in the name of profit...and that to in the form of a food item

i'm not saying "stay away from the cultural practices that arent yours!!!" but there's a line between appreciation and appropriation though, i really cannot appreciate this, or lana del rey dancing in a war bonnet or people *******izing any eastern cultures for their profit, i personally find it insulting

Er what? A harmless sweet is being produced with a pattern on it that happens to be a mask. As usual, the people 'offended' and producing the phoney outrage are white, liberal men. In any case, if you don't like it or American indians don't like it then you don't have to buy the sweets.

And what's this profit thing all about? So what. It's good that people are exploiting ideas/culture, producing something and making a profit.

Er what? A harmless sweet is being produced with a pattern on it that happens to be a mask.

Is it that hard to understand that the masks have spiritual significance and are not meant to be eaten or thrown around for commercial purposes? Your derailment tactic of calling it 'a harmless sweet' does not change the fact that it's extremely insulting to native american people. Anyway there's a reason they backed out from producing these, which you find so hard to understand

It's good that people are exploiting ideas/culture, producing something and making a profit.

Good for you yeah.

In any case, if you don't like it or American indians don't like it then you don't have to buy the sweets.

Translation : You are not allowed to get offended so shut up while we mock your cultures and drown ourselves in money

Woah it's almost as if American Indians are the spokesmen of their own culture and will speak against anything which insults their culture??

As usual, the people 'offended' and producing the phoney outrage are white, liberal men.

Yeah besides insulting other cultures and shamelessly defending their acts, they're embarrassing themselves by appropriating religious symbols without understanding their significance and history. Maybe they can't sell their own culture...who knows

Are they really mocking or insulting these cultures? Exploiting the ideas, perhaps, but not mocking them.
