Looking to buy a new, cheap camera that takes good quality photos and videos, is this a good camera?

It's just for a starter camera and probably family use!

My friend irl has something similar to that, not sure what model. But her photo's come out amazing. I would reccomend it.

Read some reviews online and they seemed pretty positive. There were a couple of negative points but I highly doubt you'll be wanting to do RAW to JPEG conversion on it :P Other than that, the reviews say it's a good camera and the quality of the pictures will be fantastic. And, for that camera, the price is very reasonable.

However, just by looking at the picture, it looks rather bulky. Not as heavy as some but it looks like it'll need four AA batteries in that compartment at the side. That doesn't sound like a lot but it can be when you're trying to take it on holiday or hold it particularly still (I'm assuming you're not after a tripod here too!) for a shot.

Oops sorry this is turning into a bit of an essay. It looks like a fantastic camera and I might consider it for myself if I didn't already have a fantastic camera which I love love love (Fujifilm FinePix S4500 if you're interested). I have to say, though, I don't think I'd recommend that for a family camera. It'll take time for you to learn how to use it properly and even longer to get used to using it. You'll have to carry the manual around for quite a while before you learn what you're doing off by heart because there are quite a few different settings that I assume you and your family won't know what they do yet.

Basically, if you really want a Family Camera, I'd have to recommend your average point-and-shoot camera. They're lightweight (great for holidays), easy to use (my mum never even needed to open the instruction booklet for hers), perfectly good quality and fun.
If you want to experiment and get into photography a bit more and don't mind the extra weight or added confusion I'd go with the one you've got right there.
